Chaos erupts at 'Save Indus River' rally

Several verbal altercations occurred between members of the crowd and camera crews during the speech of SUP leader Syed Zain Shah. The situation worsened after his address, escalating into a near-violent confrontation.
A group present at the rally reportedly misbehaved with local journalist Zakir Laghari and attempted to physically assault him. Senior journalists and members of the Hyderabad Union of Journalists, including President Hamid Mian Sheikh and Ashok Sharma, intervened to defuse the situation.

Five die in firing on Tirah protesters
Listen to article Five people died and 17 others sustained injuries when protesters were fired upon during a protest outside a military installation against the killing of a girl in the Tirah Vally of the Khyber district in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), tribal elders stated on Sunday. The protest ended after negotiations between tribal elders and security officials. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and K-P Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur condemned the shooting at the Bagh Maidan area of Tirah Valley. Tension gripped the area after the death of a 10-year-old girl the other day. Following the incident, the victim's relatives and local citizens reached the main gate of the Brigade Headquarters this morning to protest. The protesters shouted slogans against the incident and set a dispensary on fire. In the meanwhile, the shooting broke out in which three people died on the spot. Later two more injured succumbed to their wounds while on way to a hospital. Police sources said that 17 injured were taken to a local hospital but six of them were later shifted to Peshawar hospitals and seven to Orakzai district. Fifteen injured were identified as Ajmal, Abdul Halim, Ayub Khan, Siraj, Jartaj, Baitullah, Aamir Hassan, Rehmanullah, Muhammad Sadiq, Nazar Muhammad and Abu Bakar — all residents of Zakhakhel — Khan Zeb and Muhammad Javed of Shlobar; and Sher Zaman, Qasim, and Saeed Khan of Malk Din Khel. Later, the tribal elders met with security officials and presented their demands: case against those involved in the death of the girl; vacation of the occupied houses of local citizens, end to unnecessary harassment at the security check posts and financial assistance to the families of the deceased. The security forces' agreed to Rs1.5 million compensation to the families of each deceased and Rs200,000 assistance to each injured. After a partial agreement on the demands, the protesters ended the protest, and the situation started to return to normalcy. In Islamabad, meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the martyrdom of innocent and peaceful citizens due to the firing from Fitna al-Khawarij and directed the authorities concerned to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured. K-P Chief Minister Gandapur also expressed deep sorrow and grief over the Tirah incident and announced financial assistance of Rs10 million for the heirs of each deceased and Rs2.5 million for each injured, according to an Express News report. The chief minister called a Peshawar Jirga, consisting of tribal elders and public representatives so that local sentiments and concerns could be heard. He directed the district administration and the institutions to strengthen public communication and maintain order. Gandapur said that a series of jirgas of tribal elders would start from next week at the divisional and then provincial levels. National Assembly member from the area Iqbal Afridi and K-P Assembly member Abdul Ghani Afridi condemned the incident. (WITH INPUT FROM APP)

Centre, Balochistan vow to eliminate terror
The federal government has decided to continue assisting the Balochistan government in operations against terrorists until their complete elimination. According to Express News, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti in Quetta on Saturday. They discussed law and order in the restive province and the measures being taken to eliminate terrorists associated with Fitna-e-Hindustan, a term used to refer to separatist organizations which get support from arch rival India. Both leaders paid tribute to the martyrs and offered prayers for them. Later, a special meeting on law and order was jointly chaired by Naqvi and Bugti. In this meeting, in-depth discussions were held on security operations carried out in various areas. CM Bugti briefed the attendees on the overall security situation and measures being taken to ensure peace. The meeting also reviewed the implementation of the provincial action plan and examined the challenges being faced. Interior Minister Naqvi asserted that the terrorists will meet a horrific and exemplary fate. "We will bring Indian-sponsored terrorists and their facilitators to justice. Those who challenge the writ of the state will be dealt with with an iron hand. The federal government will continue to fully support Balochistan in the war against terrorism," he said. Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti noted that the ongoing war was not just the war of security forces but the war of the entire nation. He stated that all state institutions are working in complete harmony to restore peace in Balochistan. "The sacrifices of our security forces and citizens will not go in vain. Operations against elements involved in terrorism have been intensified and peace will be established at all costs," he said. Balochistan inspector general of police (IGP), Inspector general of the Frontier Corps North, deputy inspector general (DIG) of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), DIG Special Branch, director general of Levies, and other senior officials from the Home Department attended the meeting.

Madrassa teacher held for beating six-year-old in Swabi
Listen to article In another incident of corporal punishment at a religious seminary, police in Swabi have arrested a madrassa teacher for allegedly beating a six-year-old boy for arriving late to class — just days after a child died in a similar case in Swat's Khwazakhela area, Express News reported on Thursday. According to police and local media reports, the incident took place in Chota Lahore tehsil of Swabi district in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, where Qari Muhammad Sohail allegedly subjected a young student to severe corporal punishment. The child's father, Muhammad Asim, told police that his son, Muhammad Essa, was regularly attending religious classes at the seminary when he was beaten with a stick for being late. 'There were visible red marks on the boy's back,' the complaint noted. Speaking to reporters, SDPO Nauman stressed the importance of community vigilance, urging parents and bystanders to immediately report any such incidents. 'Children are not just the responsibility of their families; they are the future of our society and must be protected,' he said. The incident follows closely on the heels of a tragic case in Swat, where 12-year-old Farhan died earlier this week after being subjected to hours of torture by his teachers at an unregistered madrassa in Swat. Each reportedly took turns inflicting physical abuse until the boy succumbed to his injuries. Swat District Police Officer (DPO) Mohammad Umar Khan confirmed that ten individuals, including the head of the seminary, have been arrested in connection with the incident. Police say two more suspects remain at large and efforts are underway to apprehend them. The investigation also uncovered signs of physical abuse on several other students. A second case has been filed, and nine additional teachers have been taken into custody. Authorities said that approximately 160 children enrolled at the seminary have been handed back to their families.
