US arrests Iranian over alleged sanctions violations for tech exports

Al Arabiyaa day ago
An Iranian man who is also a US permanent resident was arrested in Los Angeles for allegedly exporting 'sophisticated electronics' from the United States to Iran, thus violating Washington sanctions, the Department of Justice said.
Bahram Mohammad Ostovari, 66, of Santa Monica and Tehran, was arrested Thursday afternoon upon his arrival at Los Angeles International Airport on charges of unlawfully exporting railway signaling and telecommunications equipment to Iran.
According to the indictment, Ostovari is the founder and CEO of a Tehran-based engineering company that supplied signaling and communications systems to the Iranian government, including on projects for the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways.
'From at least May 2018 to July 2025, Ostovari and his co-conspirators obtained and shipped sophisticated computer processors, railway signaling equipment, and other electronics and electronic components to Company A in Iran,' said Friday's announcement from the Department of Justice.
The indictment alleges Ostovari continued the illegal exports even after becoming a US lawful permanent resident in May 2020, and that he was aware of Washington's sanctions against Tehran.
'Ostovari knew of the US sanctions against Iran, mentioning them in emails to co-conspirators and directing one co-conspirator to provide false information to a federal export control officer regarding the end use of US-origin goods they had shipped to Company A in Iran,' the announcement said.
If convicted, Ostovari -- who is charged under four counts of violating sanctions -- faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for each count.

White House's Hassett says Trump's latest tariffs ‘are real' unless deals improve

US President Donald Trump has seen some trade deal offers and thinks they need to be better, White House Economic Adviser Kevin Hassett said on Sunday, adding that Trump will proceed with threatened tariffs on Mexico, the European Union and other countries if they don't improve. 'Well, these tariffs are real if the President doesn't get a deal that he thinks is good enough,' Hassett told ABC's This Week program. 'But you know, conversations are ongoing, and we'll see where the dust settles.' Hassett told ABC's 'This Week' program that Trump's threatened 50 percent tariff on goods from Brazil reflect Trump's frustration with the South American country's actions as well as its trade negotiations with the US.

Elon Musk's xAI apologizes for Grok's offensive posts

Elon Musk's startup xAI apologized Saturday for offensive posts published by its artificial intelligence assistant Grok this week, blaming them on a software update meant to make it function more like a human. After the Tuesday upgrade, Grok praised Nazi leader Adolf Hitler in the posts on social media platform X, and suggested that people with Jewish surnames were more likely to spread online hate. X deleted some of those posts several hours later, amid growing outrage. 'We deeply apologize for the horrific behavior that many experienced,' the company posted on X Saturday, adding that it had modified the system 'to prevent further abuse.' The company said the change occurred after the chatbot was prompted to 'reply to the post just like a human' as well as 'tell like it is and you are not afraid to offend people who are politically correct.' As a result, Grok became susceptible to users' 'extremist views,' which made it produce 'responses containing unethical or controversial opinions to engage the user.' Grok, which Musk promised would be an 'edgy' truthteller following its launch in 2023, has been mired in controversy. In March, xAI acquired X in a $33 billion deal that allowed the company to integrate the platform's data resources with the chatbot's development. In May, Grok ignited controversy by generating posts with unbacked right-wing propaganda about purported oppression of white South Africans that it termed 'white genocide.' On Wednesday, Musk unveiled a new version of the assistant, Grok 4, which was unrelated to the July 7 update.

Trump should ‘just release Epstein files as promised,' Elon Musk says in new criticism

Elon Musk said on Sunday that US President Donald Trump should release the Jeffrey Epstein files as promised in a renewed criticism. Seriously. He said 'Epstein' half a dozen times while telling everyone to stop talking about Epstein. Just release the files as promised. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 13, 2025 'Seriously. He said 'Epstein' half a dozen times while telling everyone to stop talking about Epstein. Just release the files as promised,' Musk said in a reply to a post on X. The Epstein case has become an obsession for conspiracy theorists. Trump's Department of Justice and the FBI said in a memo made public last week there was no evidence that the disgraced financier kept a 'client list' or was blackmailing powerful figures. They also dismissed the claim that Epstein was murdered in jail, confirming his death by suicide at a New York prison in 2019, and said they would not be releasing any more information on the probe. The move was met with incredulity by some on the US far-right -- many of whom have backed Trump for years -- and strident criticism of Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel. The US president had defended Bondi in a post on Truth Social, urging his MAGA to stop attacking his administration over the. Trump, who appears in at least one decades-old video alongside Epstein at a party, has denied allegations that he was named in the files or had any direct connection to the financier. Last month, Musk -- who exited his role as a top White House advisor -- alleged that the Republican leader is featured in the Epstein files, before later deleting the tweets.
