CFIB foresees recession in Canada, with economic contractions in Q2 and Q3
TORONTO — The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is forecasting a recession in Canada this year. A new report from CFIB shows it's forecasting that growth declined 0.8 per cent in the second quarter and will contract by a further 0.8 per cent in the third quarter. The group says an analysis of the impact of tariffs on supply chains highlights that most firms are anticipating long-term disruptions. CFIB chief economist Simon Gaudreault says the uncertain trade situation is impacting business confidence, resulting in paused or cancelled investments. Private investment is expected to fall 13 per cent in the second quarter and continue to decline by 6.9 per cent in the third quarter. Despite the anticipated downturn, CFIB highlights that inflation remains stable, putting the Bank of Canada in a better position to consider easing borrowing costs in the second half of the year. Why American Airlines Stock Tumbled Today
Key Points American Airlines beat on sales and earnings this morning. Revenues held steady year over year, but profits declined 10%. American Airlines says it will lose money in Q3, and could lose money for the full year as well. 10 stocks we like better than American Airlines Group › American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) stock sank 7.2% through 10:55 a.m. ET Thursday despite reporting an earnings beat for Q2 this morning. Analysts forecast the airline company would earn $0.77, adjusted for one-time items, on $14.3 billion in Q2 sales. In fact, the airline earned $0.95 on sales of $14.4 billion. American Airlines Q2 earnings What's bad about that? Combing through the numbers, here's what we find: Earnings as calculated according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) were lower than the adjusted figure of $0.91. This was down 10% from what AA earned a year ago, despite quarterly revenue remaining roughly flat. So obviously, profit margins declined. But why? Well, fuel costs were lower in Q2 2025 than a year ago, but salaries, wages, and benefits cost 11% more, and landing fees grew 7%. Those were among the biggest changes that stand out. Is American Airlines stock a sell? I doubt these costs are what's upset investors today, however. Looming larger are concerns about "macro weaknesses" in the economy that are affecting company guidance. Although American Airlines management says it doesn't necessarily see a reason to worry right now, it worries anyway -- and after reporting its big Q2 profit, told investors it might lose as much as $0.60 per share in Q3, while full-year results could be as good as a $0.80 per-share profit... or as bad as a $0.20 per-share loss. That's a pretty wide range of potential outcomes for the year, and the only thing AA seems certain of is that it will definitely lose money in the current quarter. With a market cap of only $7.8 billion but more than $28 billion in debt and losses on the horizon, maybe investors should worry about AAL stock, too. Jim Cramer says pullbacks in 2 stocks after earnings give new investors chances to buy
Every weekday, the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer holds a "Morning Meeting" livestream at 10:20 a.m. ET. Here's a recap of Thursday's key moments. 1. Stocks were largely higher Thursday. Both the S & P 500 and Nasdaq hit new all-time highs, led by gains in Alphabet after an earnings beat. This comes on the heels of the S & P 500's record-high close Wednesday after President Donald Trump announced a new trade agreement with Japan. There are also reports that the European Union may also be closing in on a deal with the U.S. "I would not trust a negative view of this market, because there are signs of great positivity," said Jim Cramer. 2. Shares of Honeywell fell Thursday despite quarterly beats on the company's top and bottom lines. Honeywell also raised guidance. The Club stock 5% decline is "just disrespectful," said Jeff Marks, director of portfolio analysis for the Club. Meanwhile, fellow portfolio name Dover was taking a 2.5% hit following solid earnings. Jim said the stock "should be up four to five [dollars]," considering that most of the metrics are "better." Jim said the pullbacks in both stocks are buy opportunities for new investors. 3. Alphabet raised its outlook on capital expenditure by $10 billion to $85 billion. Alphabet said the new outlook reflects an additional investment in servers and an acceleration in the pace of data center construction to meet cloud customer demand. The company is looking to raise its capex again in 2026, citing customer demand and growth opportunities. This is a positive read-through for our semiconductor stocks, Broadcom and Nvidia , which were both higher Thursday. 4. Stocks covered in Thursday's rapid fire at the end of the video were Tesla , Alphabet , UnitedHealth , ServiceNow , and Chipotle . (Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust is long AVGO, DOV, HON,NVDA. See here for a full list of the stocks.) As a subscriber to the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer, you will receive a trade alert before Jim makes a trade. Jim waits 45 minutes after sending a trade alert before buying or selling a stock in his charitable trust's portfolio. If Jim has talked about a stock on CNBC TV, he waits 72 hours after issuing the trade alert before executing the trade.
