South Africa's 20 best-selling SUVs in the first half of 2025: Chinese and Indian models gain ground

More than half of all passenger vehicles sold in South Africa are SUVs or crossovers, and their popularity continues to grow as buyers gradually part with their trusty hatchbacks and sedans.
In 2024, SUVs accounted for almost 52% of the passenger vehicle market, up from 45.2% in 2021, the year in which these high-riders overtook hatchbacks as the most popular body type.
But what are the most popular SUV models in South Africa?
We strung together the Naamsa numbers from the first half of 2025, and some interesting trends became apparent - with Chinese and Indian-built models dominating the scene.

Of the 20 top-selling SUVs in South Africa, six are the products of Chinese brands and nine are imported from India, under the Toyota, Suzuki, Kia, Hyundai, and Mahindra brands.
However, the Prospecton-built Toyota Corolla Cross emerged as South Africa's most popular SUV product by a healthy margin, with a monthly average of 1,596 units in the first half of 2025. The Cross received a facelift in early 2025, and its popularity continues to grow, with an impressive volume of 2,132 units recorded in June. It is one of just two locally produced SUVs in the top 20, the other being its Fortuner sibling.

China has two strong contenders, with the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro and Haval Jolion taking the second and fourth spots for the first half of 2025, with respective average monthly volumes of 1,216 and 1,064 units.
Suzuki's Indian-built Fronx was the third best-selling SUV product in the first half, outselling its Toyota Starlet Cross sibling with a monthly average of 1,077 versus 865.
The Omoda C5 has gained significant traction since 2024, as has India's Mahindra 3XO, which received a significant upgrade last year.
Interestingly, only one European-built SUV made the top 20, with the Volkswagen T-Cross taking 12th place with a monthly volume of 520.
Manufacturers losing ground to importers
The crux of that matter is that importers are gaining traction in South Africa.
Overall new light vehicle sales for the first six months of 2025 (all segments) are 13.6% ahead of the same period in 2024, according to Naamsa. However, while imports increased by 25.6%, with independent importers seeing a 33.4% rise, the local manufacturers saw their sales drop by 14% year to date.
Chief executives such as Toyota's Andrew Kirby speak of a slow but steady deindustrialisation of the South African motor industry, and this is particularly evident when it comes to South Africa's top-selling vehicle type, the SUV.
That being said, local manufacturers have come to rely on export contracts for vehicles such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Volkswagen Polo, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Experience the Suzuki Fronx: the affordable crossover that breaks boundaries in style and performance
The Suzuki Fronx continues to be one of the company's stand-out sellers. Image: Supplied Suzuki sales have been a revelation in the last year or so, having cemented their second place in overall sales with continuing strong performances. We recently had their best-selling Swift on test and thought it a good idea to have a closer look at their second most popular car, the Suzuki Fronx. If you're wondering about the name, Fronx is derived from two terms. The first is 'Frontier', which refers to both the way in which the vehicle crosses a frontier for Suzuki in this market segment and how its design crosses a frontier between SUV and coupe, and the second term is 'X', pointing to the crossover nature of the car. Exterior Built in India, the Fronx is certainly one of the better-looking SUVs on the road with some unique styling points. They call it Crafted Futurism, and in the Fronx, it includes the swooping roofline, beefy wheelarches with 16-inch alloys, dual-layer front lights, roof rails, a rear roof-mounted spoiler with shark fin antennae and high-mounted daytime running lights and colour-matched side mirrors with built-in indicators. In the top-tier GLX we had on test, the taillights are connected by an LED light bar that runs across the back of the car. In a nod to its SUV styling, it has silver front, side and rear skid plate garnishes. Video Player is loading. Image: Supplied Interior The interior is roomy and well-appointed, and the seats are very comfortable. It has a leather-clad flat-bottom steering wheel with buttons for the Bluetooth connection, audio controls and cruise control, which is a fantastic feature at this price point. In the GLX model, you get keyless entry and push-button start, wireless charging and a head-up display, again, an impressive feature in this segment. There are dual vanity mirrors with illumination in the sun visors, not something I regularly use, but definitely appreciated by my partner. The nine-inch infotainment system provides decent resolution with a 360-degree composite video image from the front, side and rear-mounted cameras. It's Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible, and the wireless connectivity worked flawlessly every time I drove the car. Passengers are taken care of with rear-seat ventilation as well as dual USB charging points. With 304 litres of boot space (605 litres with the 60:40 rear seats down), it's not the biggest in the segment but will carry shopping bags, school bags and sports kit without any trouble. Engine The Fronx is powered by Suzuki's 1.5-litre petrol engine used in many of their other offerings, with 77kW and 138Nm of torque coupled to either a four-speed automatic transmission or, in this case, a five-speed manual gearbox, driving the front wheels. The engine is perky and doesn't mind being revved, but I do feel that a sixth gear, especially during highway driving, would add another dimension to the Fronx. Image: Supplied Driving Still, it's a fun car to drive and you can even try some dynamic driving without fearing for your life, especially through the first three gears, also helped by its relatively light weight of 1,010 kilograms. With four adults in the car, it does feel underpowered, though, and we needed all of its naturally aspirated power and some gear changes to climb a few steep suburban roads as well as highway elevations. It's not a deal breaker, though, and I found the overall experience very much to my liking with light steering, decent and comfortable handling and easy to park. What I found impressive was the attention to noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) dampening. At highway speeds, there's a slight wind noise and over badly corrugated gravel roads, it keeps most of the rumble away from the cabin. After a week of combined driving, I achieved consumption figures of 5.8l/100km, which is more than acceptable. Safety Safety-wise, all versions have dual airbags (the GLX model adds front side airbags and side curtain airbags), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Hill Hold Control (HHC), ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. The Suzuki Fronx doesn't pretend to be what it isn't. Starting at R298,900, it's a well-priced, good-looking car aimed at the young, young at heart and small families looking for something that's not a same-same-looking cookie-cutter SUV with decent ergonomics and good fuel economy. It comes with a five-year/200,000 km promotional mechanical warranty and a four-year/60,000km service plan. A five-year roadside assistance plan and a six-year unlimited kilometre anti-corrosion warranty are also part of the purchase price.

Court hits the brakes: Mercedes repossesses R1. 6m GLE after owner's 6-year legal joyride

The six-year battle over the car was not straightforward. Leruma Thobejane, who represented himself in court while fully robed, alleged that Mercedes-Benz 'had fraudulently approached the court for the issuing of a warrant for delivery of the vehicle in September 2023, whilst being fully aware that that matter was on appeal before the Supreme Court of Appeal'. In the order, the judge found that 'in my view the warrant was issued in terms of the court order, and not in breach thereof'. The court noted that Thobejane had failed to meet his payment obligations. 'The respondent however did not dispute the allegations in the applicant's attorney's affidavit that he breached the settlement order, and that he did not make the required payments in terms thereof,' the ruling stated. The judge added: 'The applicant has already been waiting for payment in terms of the settlement agreement since September 30, 2021, and the respondent remains in possession of the vehicle. In my view relief that the applicant is entitled to, should not further be frustrated by reason the applicant's attorney's reliance on an incorrect subrule.' Thobejane was partially successful in having a previous warrant of execution set aside. However, ultimately, the court authorised Mercedes-Benz to repossess the vehicle under its latest ruling. Next Stay Close ✕ The dispute dates back to 2019, when Mercedes-Benz Finance instituted proceedings against Thobejane after he defaulted on payments for the vehicle. The credit agreement stipulated ownership would remain with Mercedes-Benz Finance until full payment was made. It also provided that, in the event of default, the company could cancel the agreement, repossess the vehicle, and claim any shortfall after resale. Despite demands, Thobejane fell into arrears, owing more than R1.36m by the time summons were issued. After litigation and discovery, the parties reached a settlement in August 2021, which was made an order of court in March 2023. The settlement agreement required Thobejane to make five consecutive monthly payments totalling R1.5m plus interest and costs. It included a clause that if he breached the payment terms, the full outstanding balance would immediately become due, and Mercedes-Benz Finance could apply for judgment and repossession – rights to which Thobejane consented. July best-sellers: Hilux, Ranger and D-Max dominate top three
South Africa's perianal top-three bakkies ended the record month as the country's overall best-selling vehicles. South Africa's monthly vehicle sales registered more than 50 000 unit sales in July with a total offset of 51 383, it's highest since October 2019. In addition to cracking the 50 000 unit mark for the first time since January 2017's 50 333, the July figures by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) represented an uptake of 15.6% on July last year's 44 452. NOW READ: July new vehicle sales cross 50 000 units for new record 'We are encouraged by the sustained positive momentum in new vehicle sales, which clearly underscores the resilience of South African consumers and the strategic importance of a stable macro-economic policy environment,' Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa said. 'This performance reflects more than short-term consumption – it signals the sector's confidence in the country's broader economic trajectory'. July Top 10 brands Out of the country's 10 best-selling brands, the top three remained unchanged from June, with Toyota placing ahead of Suzuki on 12 694 versus 6 257, and Volkswagen third on 5 738. Swapping places for fourth and fifth, Hyundai finished ahead of Ford on 3 161 compared to 2 877, while Great Wall Motors (GWM) maintained its sixth position on 2 436.
