Gold Logie nominee Lynne McGranger's health scare ‘nudges' her towards Home and Away exit

7NEWS3 days ago
She's had one of television's most incredible careers and tonight Lynne McGranger is nominated for Australian TV's biggest accolade: the Gold Logie.
McGranger, 72, spent 33 years breathing life into Irene Roberts on Home and Away, beaming warmth and that signature grit into our living rooms.
'If I'd have known this was going to happen, I would have left years ago,' she said of her nomination for Aussie TV's grand prize.
With her daughter as her date, McGranger is looking forward to having fun.
'Win, lose or draw, it's been one hell of a ride,' she said.
Her famous character Irene has had a rocky ride, facing addiction, a kidnapping and, in her final act, Alzheimer's.
McGranger was off air last year after undergoing emergency surgery for an overactive thyroid.
So did her own health battles shape her decision to leave the the show that made her a household name?
'That's a very interesting question. I wouldn't say my health scare shaped it, but it certainly gave me a nudge,' she said.
'It certainly made me realise that I'm not immortal.'
McGranger decided late last year it was time to let Irene Roberts go and pursue her passion for theatre.
'I want to enjoy life, I want to remain fit for as long as I possibly can,' she previously told Australian Women's Weekly.
'To be more regular with my friendships and staying in touch with people that I may have lost touch with over the years.
'I look forward to being a nanna down the track. And if that's not to be, still maintaining a great relationship with my daughter and my son-in-law.'
But she admitted, 'until the day I die I'll probably still be called Irene!'

'I'm not retiring': Actress Lynne McGranger announces major career news after winning Gold at the 65th TV WEEK Logie Awards

Lynne McGranger has no plans to retire, a move many expected her to announce after winning Gold at the 65th TV WEEK Logie Awards. McGranger took home the gong at Sydney's The Star on Sunday evening, marking a celebrated end to the 72-year-old's three-decade-long role playing Irene Roberts on the famed Australian soap Home and Away. The actress announced her departure from the show in February and filmed her final scenes in March, with her exit airing in the coming days. Now, McGranger has traded Summer Bay for standing ovations and even could make a return to TV for the right role. She is on the road touring with the play, The Grandparents Club in which she plays modern grandmother Liz, who is navigating family complexities. 'I'm not retiring, absolutely not,' McGranger told The Daily Telegraph on Monday. 'If I had the opportunity to come back to television at some point, of course I would consider it depending on the role and the show…but not another 33 years because otherwise I'd be very, very old.' She described the momentous last few weeks as "the world's colliding" with Irene's storyline ending, a shift to live acting and now a Logies win. Reflecting on her time on Home and Away, she said she is very comfortable with her decision to leave the show given her record as the longest-serving female cast member of a TV soap in Australia. McGranger on Sunday evening won the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television over stars Julia Morris, Poh Ling Yeow, Allison Langdon, Hamish Blake, Lisa Millar and Sonia Kruger. "Thirty-three years, I've done this amazing show," she said when accepting her award, dressed in a stunning gold gown. "I'm thrilled and honoured. "Before I forget, this is going to be pride of place next to my 1974 Wagga Wagga Drama Festival Best Actress (award). "And it's true, it's absolutely true. That's when I went, 'This acting thing is kind of good! Maybe I will be better at it than I am at teaching'." Earlier in the evening, McGranger won the Silver Logie for Best Lead Actress in a Drama for the same role. "I know I've only got 30 seconds, but I'm old," she said at the time. "I want to thank the beautiful cast of Home and Away, who have just been my family and my friends. "I love you all." McGranger, on her final day on the Home and Away set, went out with a heartfelt farewell and was gifted flowers by her emotional co-stars. "I've had the ride of my life," she said in a statement. "And I love each and every one of you so much: The cast – Ray, Georgie, Emily, Shane, Ada, James, all the young'uns. "The art department, the writers, everybody – there are so many unsung heroes. This show is made up of so many parts. "You're all amazing, and it's been my great privilege to work with each and every one of you. "I'm touched, I'm humbled, and I'm so honoured. Thank you so much."

Lindsay Lohan arrives in Sydney for Freakier Friday premiere

Don't miss out on the headlines from Celebrity Life. Followed categories will be added to My News. It's Sydney turn to get caught up in the hysteria of the Freaky Friday revival. Continuing the global press tour for the 2003 film's much-awaited sequel, Freakier Friday, Lindsay Lohan arrived at Sydney Airport ahead of Tuesday night's Australian premiere at Event Cinemas in Bondi Junction – and she was decked in top-to-toe designer gear. The Hollywood star was spotted touching down on Monday night with her entourage, including her husband, financier Bader Shammas, and their two-year-old son Luai. Lindsay Lohan arrived in Australia ahead of the Freakier Friday premiere at Event Cinemas in Sydney's Bondi Junction on Tuesday night. Picture: The actress was dripping in designer clothes, decked top to toe in Miu Miu and Hermès on her arrival on Monday. Picture: Lohan, 39, appeared in good spirits, smiling as she made her way through the terminal while wearing a Miu Miu denim jacket over her Miu Miu dress, believed to retail for $3,350 and $2,280, respectively. She topped it off with not one but two designer bags: one Miu Miu purse worth an estimated $3,540 and a Hermès Birkin Bag, which costs at least $20,000. Lohan was shielded fro the rain as she made her way to a waiting car at Sydney Airport. Picture: Not even the gloomy weather could dampen Lohan's mood as airport staff tried to shield her from the rain with umbrellas as she exited the terminal in her Miu Miu flats, said to cost $1,570. The rain did little to dampen Lohan's mood, with the actress appearing in good spirits as she smiled at fans. Picture: Lohan's husband Bader Shammas (left) was also spotted. Their son Luai also accompanied the pair on the trip, but was not seen by cameras. Picture: Lohan's co-star in the original film and now the reboot, Jamie Lee Curtis, was also spotted arriving in Sydney earlier on Monday. The beloved star, 66, walked through the terminal while wearing a black face mask, but her designer bag and signature poise was a dead giveaway of her Hollywood status. Jamie Lee Curtis was spotted arriving at Sydney International ahead of the Freakier Friday Australian premiere on Monday. Picture: Like Lohan, Curtis was also toting not one but two Goyard designer bags, estimated to retail for around $10,000. Picture: The sequel comes 22 years after the original film, in which single mother Tess Coleman (Curtis) and her teenage daughter Anna (Lohan) constantly bickered until a fortune cookie mishap caused them to switch lives and see things from the other's perspective. Fans lapped up the film, which earned Disney a cool $US160.8 million worldwide, quintupling its $US30 million budget. And over the years viewers have been asking for more. Curtis recently revealed why there was such a long wait between films in a recent interview with BBC program The One Show, revealing an Aussie link to the sequel. Freakier Friday hits cinemas on Thursday, August 7. The sequel features a multi-generational twist and also stars Julia Butters (left) and Sophia Hammons (right). 'The truth is that Lindsay had to be old enough to have a 15-year-old daughter, [but] people would ask me about the movie over and over again,' she shared. 'And finally someone in Australia said, 'Well, she is' and I was like, 'What do you mean?' because I know her as this young girl, so I don't know how old she is.' 'Someone told me [Lindsay's age] and I was, like, 'Oh! Well, maybe we can make the movie. Let's go!'' In the new film, Anna now has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they all try to wrap their heads around merging the two families, lightening strikes twice and they soon find themselves in a four-way switch.
