A Faustian bargain for the Global South

US President Donald Trump's tariff policies have unleashed global economic turmoil and a wave of protectionist measures. While many of his frequently changing tariffs may prove short-lived, their use as geopolitical weapons is poised to reshape international trade for years to come.
But the current fixation on Mr Trump's tariffs diverts attention from the larger goal: the US is leveraging its economic power to push for market liberalisation and preferential access for American firms, often at the expense of lower-income countries' development prospects.
Today's US-China standoff is a prime example. America's hostile posture toward China has never been just about trade. Rather, it reflects a strategic ambition to preserve US technological dominance.
That effort has since become part of a broader campaign to restrict access to advanced technologies across the developing world. The primary tool for achieving this goal has been the imposition of increasingly restrictive intellectual-property (IP) rules that aim to privatise knowledge through patents, copyrights, and industrial designs.
This helps explain why the trade agreement with Indonesia includes several provisions designed to limit the country's ability to move up the value chain into knowledge-intensive industries. Tellingly, Indonesia will eliminate 99% of its tariffs on American industrial, food, and agricultural imports, while Indonesian exports to the US will face an average tariff rate of 19%.
The immediate impact will be felt most acutely by Indonesian farmers, who must now compete against subsidised US agricultural products. But the longer-term risks lie in the dismantling of non-tariff barriers, which could severely constrain Indonesia's ability to diversify its economy and curtail its access to critical technologies.
According to the joint statement announcing the deal, American firms will receive sweeping privileges. Indonesia will remove all content requirements for US-made goods and accept American vehicle-safety and emissions standards, which are far more lenient than its own. It must also recognise Food and Drug Administration approvals for medical devices and pharmaceuticals, exempt US food and agricultural imports from local licensing regimes, and accept US certifications for meat, dairy, and poultry products.
Indonesia has also agreed to eliminate tariffs on intangible goods and support a global moratorium on digital customs duties -- issues that remain highly contested within the World Trade Organization. Even more troublesome are the IP provisions: the deal compels Indonesia to resolve key disputes over traditional knowledge, genetic resources, and compulsory licenses.
The US is not alone in pursuing this agenda. While Indonesia's concessions are baffling, India's recent trade deal with the UK raises even more questions. Despite being years in the making, the deal has little commercial significance, as bilateral trade accounts for less than 2.5% of either country's exports.
Media coverage of the UK-India deal has focused on tariff reductions: 92% of UK exports to India will receive full or partial tariff relief, while up to 99% of Indian exports to the UK will be tariff-free. Optimistic forecasts suggest the agreement could double export volumes in certain sectors: textiles, clothing, and jewellery for India; alcoholic beverages and automobiles for the UK.
But as with the US-Indonesia deal, the most consequential element of this agreement is its IP provisions, which tilt the regulatory balance in favour of Western patent holders.
For example, the deal promotes the use of "voluntary licences" over compulsory ones, potentially discouraging future price reductions. Another clause endorses the harmonisation of patent standards, opening the door to "evergreening" -- the extension of patents through minor tweaks to existing drugs.
It is deeply disturbing that the Indian government has accepted these terms, which jeopardise not only the future of its pharmaceutical industry but also the global supply of affordable drugs.
India's willingness to make such concessions to a weakened former colonial power -- one that is no longer a major trading partner -- makes the potential outcome of its trade talks with the European Union and the US all the more alarming. Grab posts surge in orders among expats

Grab has reported a 50% surge in delivery orders from expatriates and digital nomads in Thailand over the past 12 months. Thai cuisine such as fried rice, chicken rice and Thai tea have become favourites, while GrabBike usage grew by 30%, said the company. To better serve this segment, Grab introduced the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered "One Click Translation" feature, offering menu translations in up to nine languages, along with the launch of the Expat Pass, providing discounts of up to 2,000 baht across all Grab services. Chirakit Kwangsukstith, senior director of deliveries at Grab Thailand, said in addition to being a foreign tourist destination, many foreigners opt to live, work and do business here because of the affordable cost of living, developed infrastructure and telecom, accessible visa applications and rich cultural charm. This is especially true for Bangkok, which was recently ranked the No.1 city for American remote workers thanks to affordable rent, fast internet and stunning scenery. According to the Thailand Migration Report 2024, Thailand is home to up to 5.3 million non-Thai residents, an 8% increase from 2019. This includes hundreds of thousands of expats, both permanent and temporary, including digital nomads. Mr Chirakit said expats and digital nomads have high potential for Grab as they are considered quality users with strong spending power. "This is reflected in the growth of our delivery business, both GrabFood and GrabMart, which recorded a gain in orders of more than 50% from this segment over the past 12 months," he said. The segment's average order value ranges from 300-500 baht. The top five nationalities using the services are American, British, Chinese, Korean and Japanese, mostly residing in Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Hua Hin, said Mr Chirakit. Among expat users, the top five food categories are fast food, cook-to-order Thai dishes, healthy meals, rice bowls or speciality dishes, and takeaway drinks, according to Grab. Thai food remains a favourite, particularly convenient, single-dish meals such as fried rice, which tops the list with more than 627,000 orders annually, followed by chicken rice with more than 326,000 orders. Thai tea leads the beverage category, with in excess of 127,000 cups sold per year. In terms of ride-hailing, two-thirds of expats prefer to commute by car via JustGrab, GrabCar and GrabCar Premium, with one-third opting for GrabBike, which recorded steady growth, rising 30% year-on-year in usage. "To enhance the experience and better serve foreign users, Grab has enhanced its in-app language capabilities by developing the 'One Click Translation' feature, powered by AI technology. This feature enables users to translate dish descriptions and merchant details into nine languages with a single tap, including English, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and several Southeast Asian languages, expanding beyond the previous app setting that was limited to English only," he said. Mr Chirakit said this feature not only improves convenience for Grab users, but also creates new opportunities for its merchant-partners to reach foreign customers and boost sales. "We also launched the Grab Expat Pass, a tailored discount package for expats offering greater value across a variety of Grab services, including food and grocery delivery, transport and parcel delivery, with savings of up to 2,000 baht," he said.

Bangkok for the next Trump-Kim talks?

Some might call it improbable. Others might say it's unrealistic. But proposing Bangkok as the host city for the next summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is neither fantasy nor wishful thinking -- it's a logical, geopolitically sound proposal rooted in history and diplomacy. In a world longing for trust-building on the Korean Peninsula, Thailand finds itself at an advantageous crossroads. With renewed momentum in regional diplomacy and its unique position as a bridge between East and West, Bangkok may be the right place -- and now may be the right time. This is more than symbolism. It rests on a compelling blend of history, geography, strategic diplomacy, and recent developments that together make Thailand not just a suitable host but a pivotal peacemaker in Asia and beyond. Just days ago, Mr Trump helped broker a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia after intense border clashes displaced hundreds of thousands. His intervention -- widely acknowledged -- underscores his continuing influence in Southeast Asia and the region's openness to external mediation when conflicts escalate. Shortly thereafter, Mr Kim made a rare public appeal for stability and dialogue in Southeast Asia, calling for "constructive engagement and mutual respect". In the current geopolitical climate, such a statement signals readiness -- however tentative -- for renewed international engagement. These developments point to a single, powerful possibility: a renewed Trump–Kim summit is possible, and the venue matters now more than ever. Why Bangkok? Mr Trump's previous encounters with Mr Kim -- in Singapore (2018), Hanoi (2019), and the DMZ (2019) -- may not have produced formal agreements, but they reshaped diplomatic norms and demonstrated the power of unconventional engagement. Each venue was an Asean capital chosen for neutrality and credibility. Bangkok fits that mould, crisp and clear -- and offers much more. 1. Thailand's diplomatic balance with the US and North Korea Thailand's strategic partnership with the United States is deep-rooted, dating back to becoming the first Asian country to sign the US Treaty of Amity in 1833, and today, it stands as a key non‑Nato ally. At the same time, Thailand was among the first Southeast Asian nations to formalise diplomatic relations with North Korea on May 8, 1975, maintaining one of Pyongyang's largest embassies in the region. The presence of North Korean and South Korean embassies in Bangkok creates a unique diplomatic dual-access unmatched elsewhere in Asean, allowing Thailand to engage both sides with discretion and credibility. 2. A decades-long mediator and facilitator Thailand's reputation as a peacemaker spans decades and conflicts. In 1962–67, Thailand facilitated the formation of Asean through informal retreats and ministerial trust-building known as "sports‑shirt diplomacy" under Thanat Khoman's leadership, helping reunite regional actors after the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation. In 1989, Thailand brokered the Hat Yai Peace Agreement, ending the Malayan Communist Party insurgency, hosting the negotiation and facilitating disarmament in the Malaysian conflict. Thailand played a supporting diplomatic role in Cambodia's peace process, contributing to the international consensus that led to the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements, which formally ended Cambodia's long-running conflict with Vietnam, including support for the United Nations transitional administration. Thailand has also participated in international peacekeeping and monitoring missions abroad, such as the EU's Aceh Monitoring Mission in Indonesia, helping oversee insurgency resolution and transition after the 2005 Helsinki MoU. In Sri Lanka's long-running internal conflict, Thailand offered quiet facilitation and diplomatic assistance, joining other international actors to encourage peace talks, reconciliation, and capacity-building for local institutions (though direct mediation was led by others, Thailand was considered a trusted partner). This consistent involvement -- from Asean's founding to regional insurgency settlements and UN missions -- demonstrates Thailand's pragmatic and credible role as a facilitator over generations. 3. A trusted peace facilitator Thailand has long pursued strategic balance: engaging with both major powers and regional neighbours while maintaining neutrality. Mr Trump's recent involvement in the Thai–Cambodian ceasefire echoes this legacy. Hosting a Trump–Kim summit would elevate Thailand's identity from regional mediator to global peace platform. 4. An Asean anchor with global visibility Thailand, a founding Asean member, consistently serves as a diplomatic hub. Bangkok is trusted to host global forums -- Apec, Asean regional forums, UN meetings -- with world-class infrastructure, security protocols, and hospitality experience. 5. A strategic signal to Beijing and Moscow While US–Russia and US–China relations are strained, a successful summit in Bangkok sends a bold message. To Vladimir Putin: peace is possible without Russia -- do you want to be isolated? To Xi Jinping: Southeast Asia is leading diplomacy -- will China support or be left behind? If Mr Trump can't engage Mr Putin, he can still reshape the narrative through tangible dialogue, starting in Asia. Bangkok is where the global stage meets quiet power. A Trump–Kim summit in Bangkok wouldn't be another photo op. It would be a geopolitical landmark -- the confluence of history, diplomacy, and peace. The Grand Palace skyline, the Chao Phraya River, and media from every corner covering not crisis, but dialogue. For Mr Kim: a dignified re-entry to global diplomacy. For Mr Trump: a final shot at a lasting legacy. For Thailand: proof that we are not mere hosts, but active architects of peace. Thailand should act. This is a moment for declarative diplomacy, not passive observation. The Thai government should formally extend an invitation to host the next Trump–Kim summit in Bangkok. Even if the invitation does not yield a summit, Thailand will at least have demonstrated that she can be a creative, capable middle power, one that takes initiative on global issues. That's status, influence, and leadership -- from action, not mere rhetoric. Let Bangkok be the place where words replace weapons, and dialogue triumphs over deadlock. Thailand has earned its seat at the table. Now it's time to offer the table itself. Brexit's parallels with Trump's tariffs tell a tale

In figuring out why the US tariff shock hasn't sent the economy or financial world into a tailspin, Britain's exit from the European Union trade bloc provides something of a playbook -- and without a particularly happy ending. Aside from vast differences in economic scale and global reach, the two episodes bear some comparison in how they upended years of deeply integrated free trade and possibly in how business, the economy at large and financial markets reacted. The 2016 Brexit referendum and Mr Trump's tariffs this year were each widely billed as economic shocks that would send the financial world into paroxysms. They didn't, at least not at the outset. To be sure, both were followed by dramatic downward lurches in the two countries' respective currencies. But, to some extent, the steep drop in sterling after the referendum vote and the dollar's plunge on President Donald Trump's tariff plan this year helped offset some of the wider impact -- at least on stock markets that are loaded with global firms with outsized foreign revenue. More broadly, however, the difficulty in isolating their immediate net impact means no "big bang" economic crisis unfolds to prove critics right -- even if their enduring legacy turns out to be a slow burn of economic potential and lost output, often obscured by multiple other crosswinds. In Britain's case, the seismic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic distorted any attempt to easily assess Brexit when it actually happened. Tortuous negotiations with the EU meant the UK's departure eventually occurred on the eve of the health crisis in 2020, and the new trade rules did not come into force until a year later. But in the four years between the referendum surprise and the pandemic, the UK economy never entered a recession nor recorded a negative quarterly GDP print -- confounding pro-EU supporters at the time and bolstering the Brexit lobby. Emerging from the twin hits, however, the economy has almost flatlined since. FTSE 100 stocks, helped by the weaker pound, kept pace with the S&P 500 and world indexes for about a year after the referendum before chronic underperformance set in. Since 2018, the UK market has lagged MSCI's all-country index by some 35%. What's more, it's taken more than eight years for the pound's effective exchange rate to recover its pre-referendum levels. Few mainstream economists now doubt that Brexit has taken a serious toll on the UK economy -- even if blame for that gets sprayed in multiple directions -- and oceans of ink have been spilt trying to disentangle the precise impacts. One academic study by a number of Bank of England economists earlier this year concluded that uncertainty following the referendum resulted in little change in goods exports and imports before the exit was finalised. But after the new rules hit, UK imports fell 3% and overall exports fell 6.4%, largely because of the 13% hit in exports to the EU. While this slump seems relatively modest compared to the official forecasts of the longer-term hit, the pain has been borne disproportionately by small businesses. Additionally, these findings exclude the Brexit hit to services and London's finance sector, which registered a much bigger economic dent. And the cumulative damage to London and the service sector over the next 10 years continues to worry the City. The US tariff story is of a completely different order, of course, as it will reverberate across the world economy. But there are some parallels, not least in certain aspects of the market reactions and the initial resilience. Economists estimate that the tariffs could lop anywhere from 0.5% to 1.0% off US GDP over time. That's a US$150-$300 billion hit, which, though painful, would not be an instant crisis for an economy that's growing at a roughly 2% annualised rate, where imported goods represent just 11% of GDP and where tech and AI trends are generating considerable tailwinds. But as former White House economic adviser Jason Furman pointed out in a New York Times essay last week, the tariff damage is likely not a one-off hit. The loss of 0.5% of GDP, he argued, is "the equivalent of every household in America taking around $1,000 (32,380 baht) and lighting it on fire -- then doing it again every year. Forever". In the end, the main point of the British comparison is to show how extreme partisan arguments on the pros or cons of such giant economic policy changes don't necessarily get resolved cleanly in adaptive, hardy and hyper-complex modern economies. The upshot is there's rarely a big crash to prove a point. And that in itself is unnerving if politically motivated policies then appear workable on the surface and resist instant pushback -- only to act as a drain on the economy over a protracted period. Many observers reasonably argue that sovereign democratic politics should always trump economic conventions and even directions. But do people eventually notice when it goes wrong?
