Junior Boks go for a 6–2 bench for U20 Championship semi-final

The Citizen12-07-2025
Coach Kevin Foote has selected largely the same side that won the first two pool games of the tournament to face Argentina.
After making a few rotational changes for their last Pool A match against Scotland, which the SA U20s won by 73-14 in Calvisano, Foote has selected mainly the same combination that defeated Australia and England in their first two group games.
For Monday's important knockout match with Los Pumitas in Viadana (kick-off 8.30pm), Demitre Erasmus is back at outside centre after missing the England clash due to illness and coming off the bench against Scotland. Jaco Williams is retained at left wing for his second start in a row since replacing Siya Ndlozi, who returned home with a hamstring injury sustained against England.
The Junior Bok pack remains the same as the combination that faced Australia and England, with lock Riley Norton leading a starting team that have impressed with their physicality and ability to create plenty of scoring opportunities with their speedy outside backs.
Junior Boks have a 6–2 bench
However, Foote has opted for six forwards and two backs on the bench for the semi-final in a bid to use their explosive forwards and attack the Argentina pack, with No 8 Stephanus Linde now the extra forward among the replacements.
Foote said it was a tough task to select the team to face Argentina: 'It was so difficult to leave out anybody because the players did so well against Scotland. My message to those who weren't selected for the match-23 is to help us prepare the starting team as best as we can.'
According to Foote, Argentina's forward prowess will be a huge test for the SA U20s, which is one of the reasons why he has decided to go with a six-two split on the bench.
'The Argentinians are very confrontational and physical, and they play with lots of passion,' he said. 'We know we are in for a fight which is why we went for six forwards on the bench, because we have so much respect for them.'
The SA U20s are one of three southern hemisphere teams in the world championship semi-finals, alongside Argentina and New Zealand, who face France in their playoff at 6pm.
Starting XV: Gilermo Mentoe, Cheswill Jooste, Demitre Erasmus, Albie Bester, Jaco Williams, Vusi Moyo, Haashim Pead, Wandile Mlaba, Bathobele Hlekani, Xola Nyali, JJ Theron, Riley Norton (captain), Herman Lubbe, Siphosethu Mnebelele, Simphiwe Ngobese.
Bench: Jaundré Schoeman, Oliver Reid, Jean Erasmus, Jaco Grobbelaar, Matt Romao, Ceano Everson, Dominic Malgas, Stephanus Linde.

England coach Wiegman has learned to enjoy the good times

Sarina Wiegman sang a celebratory song in her native Dutch when England clinched a spot in the Euro 2025 final. She attempted to high-five assistant Darren Ward, but missed. She admitted she planned to treat herself with a "glass of something nice." If England's women's coach was reserved when hired in 2021, she said she has grown into the role, and her passion has been on full display at the Euros, particularly through two nail-biting knockout victories in which the Lionesses were on the brink of elimination. "First of all, my English has improved, so I understand a lot more, but also you learn more about people you work with," she said on Friday. "You learn more again about yourself and while I'm always working on developing the team, I always try to keep developing myself. "What I really wanted to do over all these years is try to enjoy it a little bit more, you have to be focused in this job, but you need to celebrate the moments that are good, it's really nice." As England get ready to contest their third successive major final on Sunday, when they face world champions Spain in the Euro 2025 showpiece, Wiegman's players have described her as a second mum - direct and demanding but caring and supportive. Ella Toone said the coach has been kind-hearted in the midfielder's first major tournament after the death of her father. Aggie Beever-Jones said after England's loss to France in their Euro opener, Wiegman put a consolatory arm around her and explained her reasons for not playing her in the game. Midfielder Keira Walsh called her "one of the best managers I've played for in terms of trying to make everyone feel loved". "It's a really difficult job when you're in a tournament, and obviously people want to play, people aren't, but she really, really cares about the human side," Walsh said. "Another thing that you notice when you play for her is how calm she is. It makes a massive difference in the 95th minute when you're losing 1-0, and you look to the side and she's very calm." Wiegman said the job can be a difficult balance. "I'm a caring person, so maybe that's the part, I care about them but at the same time I'm the coach, I'm making these hard decisions at the moment," she said. On Sunday, Wiegman will become the first person, in men's or women's soccer, to have coached teams in five consecutive major tournament finals. The 55-year-old, who is under contract through the 2027 World Cup, guided her native Netherlands to two finals before continuing that run with Euro 2022 champions England. Football Association executive Mark Bullingham said they will not let Wiegman leave for any amount of money, and Wiegman certainly does not sound like she is going anywhere. "I'm sorry, I'm still learning English but yes I have (fallen in love) with England," Wiegman said. "Otherwise I would not be sitting here with such a smile on my face. "This team has always shown so much resilience, I see that in abundance and I see that entirely through the prism of the Lionesses. They are absolutely the most resilient of people. They really want to work so hard and are so committed."

Joe Root overtakes Jacques Kallis on all-time Test list as England dominate India

Photo: Ben Stansall/AFP Image: Ben Stansall/AFP Joe Root climbed to third on the all-time list of Test run-scorers on Friday as England tightened their grip on the fourth match of the series against India. The home team, 2-1 up in the five-Test series, were 332-2 at lunch on the third day at Old Trafford, just 26 runs behind India's first-innings total of 358. Ollie Pope was 70 not out and Root unbeaten on 63. Root, appearing in his 157th Test, moved past India's Rahul Dravid and South Africa's Jacques Kallis on the all-time run-scorers list in the course of his innings. Only Australia's Ricky Ponting (13,378 runs) and India's Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) are now ahead of the 34-year-old Englishman and are both retired. England resumed on 225-2 following a blistering opening partnership of 166 in 32 overs between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett on day two, with Pope 20 not out and Root on 11. India's pacemen had too often been wayward on Thursday and Jasprit Bumrah, the world's top-ranked Test bowler, saw his first ball Friday drift down the legside to be clipped away for four by Root in elegant fashion. Root then uppercut Mohammed Siraj over the slips for another boundary. On 21, the former England skipper walked a long away across his stumps only to miss an intended glance off Siraj. India reviewed for lbw after Ahsan Raza ruled in Root's favour but replays upheld the Pakistani umpire's decision, indicating the ball would have missed leg stump. There was another scare when Root, on 22, was nearly run out but Ravindra Jadeja's shy at the stump missed. Root then square-drove Bumrah for four in stylish fashion before a single off the paceman took him past Dravid and level with Kallis. An offside single off Siraj took him into sole possession of third place, with Root's achievement greeted by applause and familiar shouts of "Rooot" from the sun-drenched crowd in Manchester. Pope, who drove Siraj for a superb four between cover and mid-off, completed a 93-ball fifty before Root followed him to the landmark in 99 balls faced. India captain Shubman Gill brought on Jadeja and fellow spinner Washington Sundar in a bid to separate England's third-wicket duo but could not engineer a breakthrough. Three of the best this weekend: Wins for Banyana, Spain and the Lions?

It's another action-packed weekend with plenty to look forward to. England fans will hope their team can pull off a surprise against Spain. Picture:There's plenty of quality women's football to look forward to this weekend, while the Currie Cup also kicks off on Friday and Australia host the British and Irish Lions in the second Test Down Under. Here then are three of our hot tips for the weekend. Banyana Banyana v Ghana Desiree Ellis' Banyana Banyana side fought bravely but we unable to overcome Nigeria in the semifinals of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations, thereby losing their grip on the title they won for the first time three years ago. There is still third and fourth place to play for, however, and Banyana will take on Ghana, a side they beat 2-0 in the group stages, on Friday. That game was tighter than the scoreline suggests, and Ellis' side will have to be on their toes against a side that took hosts Morocco all the way to penalties in the semifinals. Prediction: Banyana 2 Ghana 1 Betway odds: Banyana at 1.81 for the win, Ghana at 3.90 Spain v England Spain will take on England in the Women's Euro final on Sunday, a repeat of the 2023 Fifa Womens' World Cup final, which Spain won 1-0. La Roja will be favourites to win again on Sunday, after a superb tournament in Switzerland. Spain have won all of their matches up to now, although it took them until extra time to take down Germany in the semifinals. England lost their opening match to France, before bouncing back well in their group. The Lionesses have been on the brink of going out in both the quarterfinals and the semifinals, before somehow finding a way to triumph. Spain, however, may well prove a bridge too far. Prediction: Spain 3 England 1 Betway odds: Spain at 1.74 for the win, England at 4.30. Rugby Australia v Lions The British and Irish Lions won the opening Test 27-19 in Brisbane last weekend to be 1-0 up in the three-match series and will be favourites again this weekend, in the second Test in Melbourne. Australia though played well enough last weekend to believe they have a chance to shock the visitors, but it's going to take something special. Both sides have made personnel changes, so we're in for another cracker on Saturday. Prediction: Lions by 15 Betway odds: Lions at 1.21 for the win, Australia at 4.20. These Betway odds correct at time of publishing and subject to change.
