No invitation for peace talks: Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church

The Hindu22-05-2025
The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church here on Thursday reiterated its stance that the collective of Oriental Orthodox Churches had neither convened a meeting nor extended an invitation for peace talks.
In a statement, Youhanon Mar Diascoros, head of the Church's media wing, said that claims suggesting that the heads of three Oriental Churches invited the Orthodox Church leadership to Cairo to resolve the Malankara Church dispute was unfounded.
'It is understood that the three Oriental Churches in the Middle East gathered solely to celebrate the anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. Some have misinterpreted this as a meeting of Oriental Churches. The union of Oriental Orthodox Churches comprises seven churches, including the Malankara Orthodox Church and no such forum has convened or made any decision in recent days,' it said.
He further claimed that other members in the Oriental Church family have denounced the move of the three Churches in the Middle East.
'The Antiochian and Coptic Patriarchs and the head of the Armenian Church in Lebanon were present at the meeting. The main Armenian Church, the Apostolic Church of Etchmiadzin, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church, and the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church are not participants in this meeting. The move made by the churches in the Middle East with vested interests has been rejected by other churches in the Oriental Orthodox community,' Orthodox church stated.
The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church added that the Oriental Orthodox family, including the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, is clearly aware of the situation in India. 'Other churches responded positively to the letter sent by the Inter-Church Ecumenical department of the Malankara Orthodox Church. The matters, including the final judgment of the Supreme Court of India, were brought to the attention of the church leadership,' it said.

Punjab and Haryana Bar Council warns lawyers against advertising legal services via social media, influencer collabs

The Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana (BCPH) has issued a warning to all advocates and Bar Associations against the unethical and increasingly common practice of advertising legal services through social media platforms, promotional videos, and influencer collaborations. The Council has emphasised that such conduct violates Rule 36 of Chapter II, Part VI of the Bar Council of India (BCI) Rules. It warned that violations will be treated as professional misconduct under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961, which may lead to suspension or cancellation of an advocate's licence. It has also made it clear that office bearers of Bar Associations in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh will be held accountable if such practices continue under their watch. In a detailed communication addressed to presidents and secretaries of various Bar Associations, including those of tribunals, tax bars, and consumer forums, BCPH chairman Rakesh Gupta stated that the legal profession is a noble service, deeply rooted in public trust and distinct from commercial business ventures. Citing multiple judicial pronouncements, including a recent landmark ruling by the Madras High Court dated July 3, 2024, the Council reiterated that commercialisation of legal services undermines public faith and the sanctity of the legal practice. The communication also noted that despite previous directives, a growing number of advocates have been found soliciting work through indirect advertisements, online promotions, and even publicising favourable court outcomes with client photographs in newspapers in a clear violation of ethical standards. Rule 36 of the BCI Rules explicitly prohibits advocates from soliciting work through any form of advertisement or public endorsement, including via digital platforms. It also forbids personal publicity or associating oneself with any particular cause, organisation, or past designation to gain legal work. The Bar Council further highlighted recent concerns over 'legal influencers' spreading misleading information online, regardless of their credentials. The Council has urged all presidents and secretaries of Bar Associations to immediately disseminate the circular among their members and ensure strict compliance.

Church calls for ban on extremist religious groups

Kottayam: The arrest of two Catholic nuns by the Chhattisgarh police on charges of human trafficking and forced conversion is a deliberate attempt to undermine the social services provided by Christian churches, said Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, the Catholicos of the East and head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. He stated that encroaching on the freedom of religion guaranteed by the Constitution cannot be allowed. Extremist religious organizations must be banned and the Union govt should ensure that those who take the law into their own hands are held accountable and punished. The action taken against the nuns, he said, is a disgrace to India's secular and democratic values. The Catholicos was speaking at a solidarity meeting held at the Devalokam Catholicate Palace, the church's headquarters, to express support for the nuns. He noted the irony that the Chhattisgarh chief minister himself studied in schools established by Christian churches, yet supports such actions. "Appeasement on one side and persecution on the other is a clear double standard," he said. He questioned whether the central govt is truly capable of controlling extremist organizations or if it fears losing its supporters by doing so. If the govt is sincere in its commitment to justice and secularism, the Malankara Church hopes it will take a fair and firm stance on the issue, he added. All metropolitans of the church joined the solidarity declaration.
