US$130 Billion 5G-AI Economic Opportunity For ASEAN

BusinessToday8 hours ago
ASEAN stands at the precipice of a transformative digital era, with the convergence of 5G and Artificial Intelligence (AI) poised to unlock a staggering US$130 billion economic opportunity for the Asia Pacific region by 2030. However, a new comprehensive research report by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) warns that coordinated policy frameworks are urgently needed to harness this potential and prevent deepening digital divides across the diverse bloc.
Released today, the report, 'Leveraging 5G to Accelerate AI-Driven Transformation in ASEAN: Imperatives, Policy Insights, and Recommendations,' serves as a blueprint for policymakers to accelerate the region's digital leadership.
Professor Vu Minh Khuong, Practice Professor at the LKYSPP, National University of Singapore, underscored the urgency at the report launch. 'The convergence of 5G and AI represents the infrastructure of innovation, powering smart manufacturing, precision agriculture, and autonomous mobility. But ASEAN cannot afford to wait. The window for establishing regional leadership in intelligent connectivity is rapidly closing.'
The study highlights significant disparities in 5G adoption across ASEAN, ranging from a robust 48.3% penetration in Singapore to less than 1% in several member states. Without unified action, these disparities threaten to hinder regional competitiveness as other global regions accelerate their digital transformation.
Drawing from extensive interviews and surveys with over 400 professionals across eight ASEAN countries, the LKYSPP report identifies ten critical imperatives to fast-track 5G-AI transformation. A core recommendation is the establishment of coordinated digital leadership to overcome existing fragmentation that is slowing regional progress. The report urges ASEAN governments to view 5G not merely as a telecom upgrade, but as a strategic enabler for AI, while simultaneously addressing widening skills gaps impeding enterprise adoption.
To secure ASEAN's digital future, the research recommends five strategic priorities: Establishing national 5G-AI development strategies with clear 2025-2030 roadmaps. Creating empowered coordination agencies within ASEAN member countries. Deploying forward-looking spectrum policies that promote accessibility and innovation. Fostering vibrant AI-driven ecosystems through robust public-private collaboration. Implementing robust monitoring frameworks to track progress and enable course corrections.
The LKYSPP study emphasizes that prioritizing enterprise adoption is key to realizing 5G's economic impact. It points to existing regional successes demonstrating transformative potential, such as Singapore's 5G-powered smart ports achieving 50% latency reduction, Thailand's deployment of AI-enhanced disaster management systems, and Malaysia's wholesale network model reaching 82% population coverage. These examples, the report notes, illustrate the power of effectively implemented coordinated strategies.
Furthermore, the report highlights the critical role of private 5G networks for Industry 4.0 transformation and positions Fixed Wireless Access as a compelling solution to bridge connectivity gaps in underserved areas. Current 5G deployments are also framed as crucial infrastructure for 6G evolution, expected by 2030, making today's policy decisions pivotal for future competitiveness.
Looking ahead, the study envisions an ASEAN where enterprises scale globally through intelligent manufacturing, farmers optimize yields with AI-driven analytics, and students in remote areas access immersive education platforms, all powered by 5G and AI. Realizing this ambitious vision, according to the LKYSPP, demands bold and coordinated action, strategic planning, and sustained commitment to digital transformation.
The comprehensive 148-page report and its executive summary are now available for public download, serving as both a strategic guide for policymakers and a resounding call to action for regional institutions to seize the 5G-AI moment and shape a digitally empowered future for ASEAN's 700 million citizens. Anwar appeals to Trump to help end Gaza bloodshed

Victims in Gaza rushing for food. More than 1,000 people have been reported killed while trying to receive food aid since the end of May, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. (EPA Images pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has appealed to the US to pressure Israel to halt its attacks on Gaza and ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need. 'I appeal to US president Donald Trump to use his influence to press for an immediate end to the killing, stop the indiscriminate bombings, and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need without obstruction,' he said in a video posted on social media today. Describing the situation in Gaza as a test of humanity, Anwar said entire families had been killed, and children, including babies, were among the dead. 'Others are wasting away from hunger. This appalling disregard for human life and dignity must end, for it is a violation of the most basic moral code.' He urged world leaders to act with urgency. 'Every government that believes in international law, every nation that claims to value human life, must speak with one voice.' Anwar said those who had influence over Israel must find the courage to act decisively. 'This is the hour for moral leadership. This is the time to uphold the values we claim to defend.' He said Malaysia stood ready to work with all countries to bring relief to Gaza and restore basic principles of humanity. 'Let us not be remembered as those who stood by. Let us be guided by our conscience, to answer suffering with compassion, and to pursue peace for the sake of humanity.' More than 1,000 people have been reported killed while trying to receive food aid since the end of May, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. The UN said on July 15 it had recorded at least 875 killings within the past six weeks at aid points in Gaza run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) and convoys run by other relief groups. The majority of those killed were in the vicinity of GHF sites, while the remaining 201 were killed on the routes of other aid convoys. Earlier today, Anwar told the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia would not compromise its stance on Gaza in exchange for a better US tariff rate. He said Malaysia's position remained unchanged and that the government would continue to speak out on such issues.

Australia makes second US$525mil Aukus payment amid US review

Australia sees the nuclear-powered submarines as critical to its defence in the Indo-Pacific. (EPA Images pic) SYDNEY : Australia has paid the US A$800 million (US$525 million) in the second instalment under the Aukus nuclear submarine deal, despite an ongoing formal review of the agreement by US President Donald Trump's administration. Prime minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the latest instalment today, following an initial US$500 million paid in February. In 2023, the US, Australia and Britain unveiled details of a plan to provide Australia with nuclear-powered attack submarines from the early 2030s to counter China's ambitions in the Indo-Pacific. Australia committed to spend A$368 billion over three decades in its biggest-ever defence deal. Canberra is due to pay the US US$2 billion by year-end to support the expansion of American submarine shipyards, Reuters reported in April. 'There's a schedule of payments to be made. We have an agreement with the US as well as with the UK, it is about increasing their capacity, their industrial capacity,' Albanese told national broadcaster ABC. 'As part of that as well, we have Australians on the ground, learning those skills.' Trump launched a formal review of Aukus in June to examine whether the pact met his 'American First' criteria. It will be led by Elbridge Colby, who in the past has expressed scepticism about Aukus. Australia, which sees the submarines as critical to its own defence as tensions grow over China's military build-up, has maintained it is confident the pact will proceed. 'We support Aukus,' Albanese said. 'We have an agreement to a treaty level, with our partners, signed, of course in San Diego with the US and UK.' Washington will sell several Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines to Australia, while Britain and Australia will later build a new Aukus-class submarine.

Gold Futures Settle Higher On Softer US Dollar, Easing Treasury Yields

By Fatin Umairah Abdul Hamid KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- The gold futures contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives settled higher on Wednesday, buoyed by a softer US dollar and easing United States (US) Treasury yields, said an analyst. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes told Bernama that the safe-haven metal gained after the US-Japan trade deal sparked a regional risk-on rally. On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump struck a trade deal with Japan, which included cutting US tariffs on the country to 15 per cent from 25 per cent. Innes said gold prices were also influenced by growing concerns over Trump's public criticism of Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell, as Trump pushed for interest rate cuts that could benefit the economy in the short term. At the close, the spot-month July 2025 contract rose to US$3,442.2 per troy ounce from US$3,395.90 per troy ounce on Tuesday, the August 2025 contract increased to US$3,460.5 per troy ounce from US$3,414.20 yesterday, and the September 2025 contract climbed to US$3,466.4 per troy ounce from US$3,420.10. The October 2025, December 2025, and February 2026 contracts also settled higher at US$3,495.6 per troy ounce from US$3,449.30 previously. Trading volume declined to 30 lots from 52 lots, while open interest widened to 58 contracts from 28. Physical gold was priced at US$3,409.85 per troy ounce based on the London Bullion Market Association's afternoon fix on July 22, 2025.
