Delhi Police on high alert after Operation Sindoor: paramilitary, local police, SWAT commandos deployed at strategic locations

Indian Express07-05-2025
The Delhi Police Wednesday issued a high alert across the city following India's strike at terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) under Operation Sindoor, with security around the headquarters of all three defence forces, paramilitary installations, and other government offices stepped up.
Security personnel, including paramilitary and local police, along with the SWAT commandos, have been deployed at strategic locations in the New Delhi district. The local police and the paramilitary personnel have also been deployed at the CGO complex in South Delhi.
All the deputy commissioners of police have been asked to be on alert and also hold the mock drill exercise with the full cooperation of the Civil Defence, Delhi Fire Services (DFS), and other government authorities.
Officials said vigil has been increased at the borders of Delhi, and the local police have been asked to increase the patrolling.
The directions from the Delhi Police Headquarters have been issued amidst the scheduled mock drill exercises at 55 locations in all 11 districts of the Capital Wednesday at 4 pm. Officials said drills will be held across all 11 districts — five locations in each of them — covering 660 schools and 40 markets.
In the evening, the drills, 'Operation Abhyas', will be held across the country following a May 5 directive from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) amid India-Pakistan tensions after the Pahalgam terror attack. It will simulate multiple hostile scenarios — incoming air raids with siren activation and blackout procedures, urban fire emergencies, search and rescue operations, casualty evacuation, temporary hospital setups, and evacuation of civilians to demilitarised zones or bunkers.
Operation Sindoor came two weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed.

Witnesses shot, silenced, ignored: SC flags 'eyes and ears' of justice system, seeks real protection beyond schemes

Following the murder of a double murder witness in Delhi, the Supreme Court emphasized the critical need for witness protection. Legal experts are urging the strict implementation of the witness protection program. NEW DELHI: It's been over two weeks since armed assailants shot dead a double murder witness inside his car in southwest Delhi. In the last one year, witnesses in three cases have been killed and several have faced intimidation. With the apex court on Thursday expressing the need to protect witnesses and calling them police's eyes and ears, legal experts said there was a dire need to implement the witness protection programme in spirit. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi Cops say that they take a lot of measures and precautions ranging from naming the witnesses in codewords in charge-sheets and providing them security cover if required. However, sources said that a more robust threat analysis of witnesses needed to be carried out in critical cases and measures taken to secure them. "This is crucial so that important witnesses are not harmed or don't turn hostile in critical cases. Any complaint of witness intimidation should be given high priority given the extent to which Delhi Police 's cases rely on witness statements," said a retired senior cop. Delhi govt notified the new witness protection scheme in April this year. It categorises witnesses into three threat levels-high, moderate and low- and provides tailored protection measures accordingly. "The scheme is financed through a state witness protection fund, which is supported by budgetary allocations, court-imposed costs, donations and CSR contributions. Witnesses or their representatives can file applications for protection with the authority concerned, who will then prepare a threat analysis report and recommend protection measures," an officer explained. The protection orders are implemented by the witness protection cell of Delhi Police or the trial court, while the home department handles identity changes and relocation. The scheme emphasises confidentiality and record preservation, with stakeholders required to maintain strict secrecy and preserve records until legal proceedings conclude. An appeal mechanism allows aggrieved parties to challenge decisions within 15 days, and filing false complaints may result in expense recovery from the witness. Besides strict enforcement of this scheme, retired police officers also highlighted that witness protection was not just about short-term safety but long-term support and monitoring were crucial to ensure the witness's continued safety and well-being. "Psychological support and counselling are crucial to help them cope with the emotional impact of testifying," said a retired senior cop. Delhi Police said it had a dedicated witness protection cell at the district level, headed by an additional DCP rank officer, to implement the scheme and the cell acts on threat analysis reports. In various countries, the police's witness protection plan comprises various measures, including installation of security doors, CCTV cameras, alarms and fencing in witnesses' homes. Their identities are protected by changing their names or alphabets. In cases of grave threats, witnesses and their families are relocated to a safe location too. The US Marshals Service operates the witness security programme, which provides protection and new identities, including social security numbers to witnesses and their families.

Tejashwi Yadav or Rahul Gandhi? Chirag Paswan says his biggest rival is...

Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan launched a sharp attack on the opposition amid the ongoing uproar in Parliament over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound an exclusive interview with India Today, Paswan questioned the opposition's intent, accusing them of stalling proceedings over an issue that fell outside the ambit of the BIHAR ROLL REVISION"The House has been held hostage over an issue where the government has no authority to respond. How can Parliament hold a discussion on a matter involving the Election Commission, which is a constitutionally independent body? Who is expected to answer from the government? Ask Rahul ji, who will respond? Will the Election Commission come to the House and reply? Under which minister does the Election Commission fall that the government should be answerable?" Paswan asked. Calling out the opposition's double standards, Paswan said their position on the matter lacked consistency."The opposition only wants to create a ruckus. It was the opposition that raised the SIR issue in the first place. They claimed there was malpractice in Maharashtra. Now, when the Election Commission is removing duplicate voters based on their concerns, they still have a problem. Names of dead voters are still on the rolls. Infiltrators who are not citizens are also listed as voters. That's why the list is being updated. It's a good move. If infiltrators enter the country, that's wrong," he OPERATION SINDOOR DISCUSSIONOn the demand for a discussion on Operation Sindoor and US President Donald Trump's claims that he helped broker the ceasefire with Pakistan, Paswan dismissed it as "political noise"."They only want to create a ruckus. They are only concerned about what the President of another country is saying about Operation Sindoor," he also responded to the controversy surrounding Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. "Some issues should be kept away from politicisation. Today, the opposition is suddenly showing love for him. These are the same people who had brought a no-confidence motion against him, and now they are pretending to be the most sympathetic. Their double standards are clearly visible," he PASWAN ON HIS BIGGEST RIVALWhen asked about his biggest political rival - Tejashwi Yadav, Prashant Kishor, or Rahul Gandhi - Paswan struck a composed tone."My history has been marked by internal family disputes. I have love and respect for Pasupati Paras. My fight is over policies, not personal issues. I have never made personal comments on anyone, and I never will. The dignity of my words doesn't allow me to," he ended with a direct challenge to the opposition leadership. "I want to ask my younger brother (Tejashwi), what is your vision? I have a vision, the NDA government has an agenda, and we work together on it. What is your vision? What is the vision of Congress? What is the vision of the RJD?"- EndsMust Watch

Ravi Shankar Prasad: ‘Why is Congress, Opposition shying away from a debate?'

What do you have to say about the Opposition's uproar over Bihar voter rolls revision? The Opposition has got the right to ask questions, including occasionally creating ruckus as well. But how long will it continue? (LoP, Lok Sabha) Rahul Gandhi says he is not being allowed to speak but his party is in the forefront of creating a complete chaos in the House. Why is Congress and the Opposition shying away from a debate on any issue? Today is the third day. We go and sit and come back. It is agonising, painful and disgusting, to say the least. The whole nation watches us. You can question us in any powerful debate and make us uncomfortable, and we are equally competent to reply to all your debates to make you uncomfortable. Why don't you allow the debate to happen? And then you complain — 'meri awaaz shaant ki jaati hai (my voice is being silenced)'. Why is the debate not being taken up? The larger question is: are they interested in debate? Every debate has to be structured as per Parliamentary rules. Has 16 hours not been allocated for the Operation Sindoor debate, with nine hours in the Rajya Sabha? That is the way the House functions. You ask for a debate, it will be accepted, it will be prepared. You unleash a big attack, we will respond… As far as SIR is concerned, I will raise some questions. To be a voter you have to be a citizen of India – can the EC examine it or not? To be a voter you have to be an ordinary resident of an area. Can the EC examine that or not… Today there are lakhs of votes of people who are dead or have migrated to other areas… What is the problem if these things are being examined by the EC? They (Opposition) sometimes claim there is a faulty voter list. And now when revision is being done, they have a problem. Once the draft publication is done, you have a right to file objections, to appeal to the collector, to file a second appeal for revision before the Chief Electoral Officer. So many mechanisms are available. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has said the Mahagathbandhan may take a call to 'boycott Bihar polls' in view of the SIR exercise? I believe that is a casual comment. I will only tell him, 'young man, don't shy away from a fight.' As for Rahul Gandhi's venomous attack on the EC, I will say one thing in Hindi: 'Agar aap ko vote nahin milta to hum kya karein (What do we do if people don't vote for you)?' Even JD(U) MP Giridhari Yadav has questioned the SIR exercise… I don't want to make any comments on individual members. I know that Nitish Kumar, the whole JD(U) and the entire NDA is one. Some critics say in a state like Bihar the exercise can be a huge inconvenience and end up disenfranchising many voters… Haven't 98% of people already filled out the form? Or maybe 99%? Just tell me. People know their rights, people know their obligations and they are following it.
