Doug Ghim clings to one-shot lead at John Deere Classic
Doug Ghim shot a 3-under-par 68 and held onto a one-stroke lead over Max Homa and a group of contenders at the John Deere Classic on Friday in Silvis, Ill.
Homa is part of a five-way tie for second after also posting a 68 late Friday afternoon at TPC Deere Run. He matched Ghim at 12 under with a birdie at the par-5 17th hole, but after finding a bunker off the 18th tee he failed to save par and dropped back a shot.
Ghim, a 29-year-old Illinois native, is hoping to land his maiden PGA Tour victory in his home state. He made an eagle for the second straight round, holing out from 179 yards away at the par-4 15th.
After reaching 13 under for the tournament with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 4-5, Ghim bogeyed his closing hole, No. 9.
The round of the day belonged to defending champion Davis Thompson, whose bogey-free 63 catapulted him to 11 under. Tied with Homa and Thompson are Brian Campbell (66), David Lipsky (67) and Argentina's Emiliano Grillo (66).
Colombia's Camilo Villegas (66) and Si Woo Kim of South Korea (67) are part of a group at 10 under as the second round finished up late Friday.
Rickie Fowler dropped four shots in a four-hole span on his back nine, with two bogeys and a double bogey, but he birdied No. 17 to finish up a 1-over 72 and get to 5 under. Fowler is in line to make the cut, projected at 4 under par.

Dante Sealy had what proved to be the match-winner later in the first half and Olger Escobar scored a third in second-half stoppage time for Montreal (4-15-6, 18 points), which earned a victory two days after the club published an open letter to fans apologizing for its extended struggles. The Canadian side began the day 18 points out of the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Tomas Chancalay scored his fourth goal for New England (6-11-7, 25 points), which lost its third straight and saw its own winless skid extended to nine. The Revolution have conceded 21 times in their last nine games, and 10 in their last three. Owusu pulled Montreal level with some ruthless striker play in the ninth minute, and only six minutes after Chancalay's opener. After receiving Dawid Bugaj's pass from the right with his back to goal, the brawny striker used his body to shield a defender, spun, then fired a low finish past Aljaz Ivacic from near the penalty spot. Sealy's go-ahead strike in the 36th came from a similar area but was simpler, with Caden Clark providing the final pass into the box and Sealy hammering a half-volley past Ivacic in stride. Chancalay and Carles Gil were at the root of New England's best chances to pull level. In the 53rd minute, Gil played Chancalay down the left, whose cross took a heavy deflection and forced Jonathan Sirois into a scrambling stop at his near post. In the 70th, Gil unleashed a powerful strike that had Sirois beaten but rattled the crossbar. Then in the 85th, Chancalay also got the ball past the Montreal keeper, only to see his effort cleared off the line by defender Joel Waterman. On the other end, Owusu nearly doubled his total for the night in the 90th minute when his low effort beat Ivacic but struck the right post. Then came Escobar's finish from close range, hammered emphatically into the roof of the net to seal the outcome.

BLAINE, Minn. (AP) — Thorbjorn Olesen worked out of trouble more than once Friday at the TPC Twin Cities to take a one-stroke lead over Jake Knapp into the weekend in the 3M Open. Olesen followed an opening 9-under 62 on Thursday with a 66, hitting out of the rough to set up a 5-foot birdie putt on his final hole — the par-4 ninth. The 35-year-old Danish player also recovered from a double bogey on the par-4 15th with consecutive birdies as he searches for his first PGA Tour victory. 'I think both days, my iron play has been really, really good,' Olesen said. 'I hit a lot of shots really close to the pin and gave myself a lot of good chances. Today, there was like two or three bad drives that costed me, but I still felt pretty good over the ball.' He had a 14-under 128 total. Knapp shot 65. Pierceson Coody (65) was another stroke back with Sam Stevens (68). Stevens closed with a bogey on No. 9. Takumi Kanaya (64), Chris Kirk (67) and Matti Schmid (68) were 11 under. Knapp had the lowest score on the PGA Tour this year, a 59 at the Cognizant Classic in February. Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., nearly matched Knapp with a course-record 11-under 60 on Thursday, but dropped 29 spots Friday with a 75. Ben Silverman of Thornhill, Ont., joined Svensson at 7 under after a round of 69.
