In a move that can only be described as one of the biggest of the offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers were able to sign Luka Doncic to an extension.
The deal, worth $165 million, keeps Doncic in Los Angeles for three more years before he is due for a five-year, $400 million-plus deal in 2028, according to The Athletic. While this was a monumental day for the Lakers, who traded for Doncic in February, there was one player noticeably absent at Doncic's press conference.
Four-time NBA MVP LeBron James was not among the players photographed in attendance on Saturday
NBA Fans Had Plenty of Thoughts After Noticing LeBron James' Lack of Attendance
In a photo shared to X, players such as Maxi Kleber, Marcus Smart, Gabe Vincent, Deandre Ayton and Rui Hachimura were seen smiling alongside Doncic. While it was a big day for Doncic and the Lakers, many fans flooded to the comment section to call out James.
"Except LeBron," pointed out one fan.
"Ofc LeBron isn't there, he to busy training at the clippers facility," joked another.
"While lebron playing golf in fog," said another.
"no bron," asked a fourth.
"LeDrama notably absent…Shocker," commented another.
Why Was LeBron James Not at Luka Doncic's Contract Extension Press Conference?
While Austin Reaves also wasn't pictured along with a handful of other players, James' absence spoke volumes on how this offseason has gone for him and the Lakers.
It's unclear what course he was playing, but James shared multiple videos of himself on a golf course drenched in fog. James has also yet to comment on Doncic's extension to the media or even acknowledge it on social media.
LeBron James Trade Rumors
In June, James' agent Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania that the Lakers seemed to have a different mindset than the 40-year-old star.
"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul told ESPN. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career."
Following this comment, James was spotted at the Cleveland Cavaliers' facility on July 4.
James did address the photo upon its virality, expressing that he lives in Cleveland part-time. However, this wasn't the only time he was spotted working out at a facility associated with another team.
This past week, he shared photos on Instagram of himself working out in front of the Los Angeles Clippers logo. While it was later confirmed that Klutch Sports now owns the facility, which used to belong to the Clippers, it's hard to imagine that James wasn't hoping to elicit some sort of reaction with the photos.
What's Next for LeBron James?
It's unclear if James actually wants to be traded or is just toying with the Lakers, but for the first time in his career, he doesn't really have any leverage. He opted into his $52.6 million player option in June, which makes his asking price via a trade or buyout extremely unreasonable.
In addition to the fact that he chose to pick up the option, the Lakers don't have to trade him if they don't want to. Not to mention, ESPN's Bobby Marks reported one day after he picked up his option that there isn't a market for the aging star.
So, whether he likes it or not, it appears James will continue to be a Laker. He also may owe Doncic an apology for missing his big day. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 2, 2025, where it first appeared.

Yankees' slide continues thanks to walk-off Rangers HR in extras; Aaron Judge back Tuesday

A change of venue was not the cure for what's ailing the New York Yankees. But help is on the way. Manager Aaron Boone announced Monday after an 8-5 loss to the Texas Rangers that Aaron Judge will return to the lineup Tuesday after missing 10 games with a flexor strain in his right elbow. Judge is expected to play designated hitter until he's cleared to return to his spot in the outfield. Prior to Boone's announcement, the Yankees lost in heartbreaking fashion in extra innings. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Yankees blow lead, lose on walk-off The Yankees struck first with a leadoff home run by Paul Goldschmidt, then took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning. But the Rangers batted around in the second to take a 4-3 lead. The Yankees retook the lead and held a 5-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth. There, pinch hitter Joc Pederson sent it to extras. With the bases empty and one out, Pederson launched a 2-1 Devin Williams changeup over the plate into the right-field stands to tie the game at 5-5. The blown save was the third of the season for Williams, a two-time All-Star and lights-out closer with the Milwaukee Brewers. With Pederson's home run, Williams' ERA in his first season in New York inflated to 5.10. The blast set up Josh Jung for his 10th-inning heroics. With a man on second and two outs, the Yankees intentionally walked Wyatt Langford to get to Jung in the six slot. Reliever Jake Bird left a 1-1 sinker thigh-high and just inside that Jung turned on. The result was a no-doubt home run into the left-field stands that ended the game. Yankees in free-fall, face critical games vs. Rangers The loss was the Yankees' fourth straight following an unprecedented three-game sweep at the hands of the Miami Marlins. They're now 7-10 since the All-Star break. The defeat dropped the once first-place Yankees to 60-53, 5.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East and 2.5 games behind the rival Boston Red Sox, who won their sixth straight game Monday night. It also left them with a 1.5-game cushion over the Rangers and in a tie with the Seattle Mariners for the last wild-card spot in the American League. This three-game series against the Rangers could end up proving critical for the postseason standings, and it's already going bad for New York. Can Judge help Yankees turn things around? Judge hasn't played since July 25 with the elbow injury that landed him on the injured list. He took batting practice over the weekend and will return to the lineup Tuesday on his first day of eligibility. As the Yankees face a multitude of problems, Judge's return can't come soon enough.

Dodgers let strong start from Tyler Glasnow go to waste in loss to Cardinals

The Dodgers' Tyler Glasnow and the Cardinals' Sonny Gray squared off in an old-school pitchers' duel Monday. But both were watching from the clubhouse when pinch-hitter Yohel Pozo's two-out single in the ninth lifted the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory at Dodger Stadium. Glasnow gave the Dodgers seven strong innings for the second time in three starts, allowing a run on three hits — none after the second inning — while striking out seven. Gray was even better in his seven innings, giving up just a fourth-inning solo home run to Freddie Freeman and a second-inning walk to Max Muncy. Both then gave way to shaky bullpens, which is when things got interesting. Read more: 'They've got to perform better.' Three Dodger stars who need to heat up at the plate The Dodgers' bullpen gave up more runs over a span of nine batters than Glasnow did all night. Anthony Banda went first, allowing a go-ahead homer to Iván Herrera three batters into the eighth inning. But the Cardinals' Riley O'Brien gave the run right back in the bottom of the inning on a double to Teoscar Hernández. Newcomer Brock Stewart started the ninth for the Dodgers, but he didn't finish it. After Willson Contreras and Lars Nootbaar greeted him with singles to put runners at the corners, Pozo squirted a two-out single over the infield to score pinch-runner Garrett Hampson for the go-ahead run. After Shohei Ohtani's led off the ninth with a single, the Cardinals' JoJo Romero finally shut the door, getting Mookie Betts to pop out and striking out Freeman. After walking Will Smith to put the tying run at second, he retired Muncy on a line drive to right to end the night. Read more: Dodgers manufacture enough offense to slip past Tampa Bay Rays Glasnow got off to a rough start, allowing three hits, including a solo homer by Masyn Winn, in the first two innings. But he settled in after that, allowing just one baserunner the rest of the way, though he would have nothing to show for it, finishing without a decision for the eighth time in 10 starts. Gray, meanwhile, was dealing from the start for the Cardinals, setting down 10 of the first 11 batters he faced before Freeman tied the game with a one-out home run, his 13th of the season, in the fourth. Freeman has hits in 12 of his last 13 games and is batting .500 over his last six games. But his home run would prove to be the only hit the Dodgers would get off Gray, who struck out eight and walked just one. Sasaki set to throw Right-hander Roki Sasaki is expected to throw the equivalent of three innings to hitters Friday and if that goes well, he could begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week. He has not pitched in nearly three months after going on the IL with a shoulder impingement. Edman goes on injured list Utilityman Hyeseong Kim, out since July 29 with a shoulder issue, is swinging a bat and taking grounders. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is optimistic he will be able to return soon. But another utility player, Tommy Edman, went on the IL with an ankle injury. With Kim, Edman and Kiké Hernández, another utility player, all out with injuries, Roberts has not had the usual versatility he has enjoyed in fielding a lineup. Mario Lemieux's bid to buy back the Penguins is not close to estimated team value, report says

Mario Lemieux's bid to buy back the Pittsburgh Penguins does not come close what the team's estimated value is likely worth, according to a new report. Earlier this summer, it was reported that Lemieux, along with Ron Burkle and David Morehouse, were interested in buying the team back from the Fenway Sports Group, who purchased the team in 2021. Lemieux and Burkle sold the Penguins to FSG for just shy of $1 billion and last month, it was reported that the Lemieux group was considering its financial options that could lead to taking control of the Penguins again at some point. A new report from Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman suggests that the Lemieux group's bid for the team isn't close to FSG's apparent asking price. The only thing I've heard about that so far is that they're just well below what Fenway would want to be the number," Friedman said on his 32 Thoughts podcast. DK Pittsburgh Sports reported last month that the Lemieux group was prepared to buy somewhere in the range of $1 billion for the team. The Penguins were valued at $1.75 billion in the latest Forbes rankings in the fall of 2024, which came in the midst of franchise values skyrocketing across the National Hockey League. Friedman also referenced the recent $1.8 billion sale of the Tampa Bay Lightning, suggesting that price point could be "where the Penguins would want to be."
