US says ‘specific steps' agreed to end Syria violence after Israeli military attacks Damascus
The Syrian foreign ministry accused Israel of 'treacherous aggression' as Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the move and said its forces were 'working to save our Druze brothers and to eliminate the regime's gangs'.
The Israeli hostilities have marked another escalation of violence in the Middle East region and this time against the Islamist-led administration of interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Ahmed had warming ties with the US administration and the interim Syrian government had evolving security contacts with Israel, yet the country is facing a violent aggression from Tel Aviv.

Reports suggest more than 300 people have been killed in Suweida since Sunday, when clashes between Druze militants and Bedouin tribes started.

The United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that he is 'very worried' about the violence in southern Syria and believed it would end within hours.
'We have engaged all the parties involved in the clashes in Syria. We have agreed on specific steps that will bring this troubling and horrifying situation to an end tonight,' Rubio said in a post on X.
However, Israel has accused the new Syrian rulers as 'disguised jihadists' and refused to allow the Syrian administration to move their forces into southern Syria, in order to protect the area's Druze community from attack.
Diplomats have said that the United Nations Security Council is also poised to meet on Thursday to address the violence and sectarian conflict. The council must condemn the barbaric crimes committed against innocent civilians on Syrian soil,' Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said.
Syria's foreign ministry has said that it welcomes the efforts made by the US and Arabian sides to resolve the crisis peacefully. Syria's state news agency Sana reported that Syrian forces have started to withdraw from Suweida.

The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III entered Gaza in the morning to express the 'shared pastoral solicitude of the Churches of the Holy Land," read a statement released by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. The patriarchs and their delegation arrived at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza in the afternoon. As well as the three people killed in the strike, 10 were wounded, including the resident priest. The church compound was damaged. The delegation was also planning on sending hundreds of tons of food aid, medical supplies and equipment to families inside Gaza, the patriarchate said, adding they also had 'ensured evacuation' of individuals injured in the attack to hospitals outside Gaza. Why US branding ‘Pahalgam' perpetrator TRF a global terror outfit is a message to Pakistan
In a move that once again exposes Pakistan's terror playbook, the United States has officially declared The Resistance Front (TRF), the group behind the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, as a 'Foreign Terrorist Organisation' and a 'Specially Designated Global Terrorist' entity. US secretary of state Marco Rubio delivered the message with clarity: America stands with India against cross-border swiftly welcomed the development, calling it a crucial step underlining the growing Indo-US counterterror alliance. The move comes on the back of the February 2025 India-US joint statement and Quad foreign ministers' pledge to intensify the global crackdown on terror outfits, such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), The Islamic State (ISIS) and Al- Qa' Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Washington visit in February, the joint communiqu had pressed Pakistan to deliver justice in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and Pathankot terror attack cases. With TRF now internationally exposed, the message is unmistakable: no more safe havens for terrorists, no more deniability. According to security experts, TRF, formed after the Indian government in 2019 abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution and revoked the special status of Kashmir, is a rebranded front of the banned LeT, directed by Pakistan's military and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Notwithstanding Pakistan's claims of TRF being India's homegrown insurgency, the outfit relies on the LeT's logistical, financial and operational support, with leadership, training bases and safe-houses located in Pakistan. This rebranding seeks to evade Financial Action Task Force (FATF) scrutiny, international bans and attribution while posing as a local resistance group to gain sympathy. TRF's attack on tourists in Kashmir's Pahalgam is seen as aimed to destabilise the region and push Pakistan's false narrative of indigenous rebellion in the Kashmir Valley. Intelligence, including intercepts and digital footprints, allegedly confirm that the orders had come from Pakistan army chief Asim Munir, it all timed to divert attention from domestic unrest, the crackdown on Imran Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, and to justify his unconstitutional self-appointment as Field Indian government had, in January 2023, designated TRF as a terrorist organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The group's attacks in India have focused on civilians, minorities, tourists and security forces. The organisation's leadership line-up includes Sheikh Sajjad Gul as supreme commander (currently active and a designated terrorist), Muhammad Abbas Sheikh (founder, deceased), Basit Ahmed Dar (former chief operational commander, deceased), and Ahmed Khalid (spokesperson, active).Besides Pahalgam, TRF has been involved in several high-profile terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, notably the June 2024 Reasi bus attack on Hindu pilgrims that left nine people dead and the October 2024 killing of six migrant workers in Ganderbal. Previous attacks also include the killing of army and police officers in Anantnag in September 2023 and the assassination of a BJP leader and his family in Bandipora in July founder Muhammad Abbas Sheikh, previously associated with the Hizbul Mujahideen, was killed by security forces in 2021. He was succeeded by Basit Ahmed Dar, who was killed in May 2024. Sheikh Sajjad Gul, the current leader, is a key planner and operates from Pakistan. Born in Srinagar in 1974, Gul is known to have directed operations such as the killing of Kashmiri journalist Shujaat Bukhari in 2018, cyber-terror campaigns against Kashmiri Pandits and the Ganderbal attack on migrant also masterminded the digital propaganda wing 'KashmirFight', a mouthpiece of TRF. It disseminates separatist narratives, claims responsibility for attacks and runs psychological operations. Although it masquerades as a journalistic or human rights blog, the website (registered in Iceland via NameCheap) promotes terrorism and anti-India content. KashmirFight also operates on Mastodon, Chirpwire, BiP and Telegram, where it coordinates propaganda, recruitment and point out that on Mastodon (since March 2024), KashmirFight has promoted content in alliance with the Jhelum Media House (JMH), another TRF-affiliated propaganda outlet. Following the 2024 Reasi bus attack, JMH had published threats of future attacks on tourists. On Chirpwire (since April 2024), the group maintains an encrypted presence. KashmirFight also has a BiP communication channel used for voice/video communication and propaganda. On Telegram, TRF runs a public channel, with 627 subscribers, wherein it has both claimed and denied terror the Pahalgam attack, TRF had denied involvement and accused Indian intelligence agencies of orchestrating the operation, citing a supposed pre-filed incident report and a delayed Indian security apparatus response to the attack. It referenced a purported 'Operation TRINETRA', allegedly devised by Indian intelligence agency RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) to implicate TRF in a mass-casualty event ahead of US vice-president J.D. Vance's visit in TRF claimed to have hacked Indian intelligence agencies' (Intelligence Bureau and RAW) data and threatened to leak classified material about India's operations in Kashmir, Bangladesh and Myanmar. The group released what it called a 'Top Secret/Special Intelligence' report outlining the alleged false flag plan—all believe TRF has lately shifted its targeting strategy to focus more on civilians, non-local workers and infrastructure, reflecting its resistance to demographic changes and central government development projects in Kashmir. Online rhetoric has painted non-Kashmiri migrants and tourists as 'settler colonists'.The Pahalgam attack, executed by TRF's 'Falcon Squad', had the terrorists using advanced weapons, camouflage and head-mounted cameras. The attackers reportedly checked religious identity markers and forced victims to recite Islamic declarations. Indian intelligence has identified the lead attacker as Hashim Musa (aka Asif Fauji), a former commando of the Pakistan Army's Special Service Group. Musa was supported by Pakistani national Ali Bhai and two Kashmiris, under coordination from LeT commander Saifullah Kasuri in significant strike by TRF was the October 2024 Z-Morh tunnel (Sonamarg) attack, in which terrorists entered a construction site and opened indiscriminate fire. CCTV footage confirmed the use of M4 carbines and prior reconnaissance of the infrastructure project worth thousands of crores. Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has officially exited the opposition's Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc on Friday. Party's senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Friday said that the AAP is not part of the opposition alliance anymore and will also not participate in the alliance's meeting scheduled ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament which will begin on Monday. Singh said that the INDIA bloc was formed only for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and the party has contested all subsequent assembly polls independently. AAP and Congress had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections together in Delhi under the INDIA bloc. However, the two parties went solo in both the Haryana and Delhi assembly polls. 'The AAP has cleared its stand. The INDIA bloc was for the (2024) Lok Sabha polls. We fought the Delhi and Haryana Assembly polls on our own. We are going to fight the Bihar election solo. We fought the bypolls in Punjab and Gujarat all by ourselves. The AAP is not part of the INDIA," the Rajya Sabha MP said as quoted by news agency PTI. The AAP leader, however, said that the party will maintain strategic alliances with opposition parties within the parliament. He said, 'On Parliamentary issues, we do take the support of opposition parties such as the TMC and DMK. And so do they take our support. We have always played the role of a strong and powerful opposition and will do so," he added. Meanwhile, the AAP leader questioned the Congress' role in leading the opposition bloc. 'It is not child's play. Did they hold any meeting after the Lok Sabha polls? Was there any initiative to expand the INDIA bloc? Sometimes they criticise Akhilesh Yadav, sometimes Uddhav Thackeray and sometimes Mamata Banerjee. The INDIA should have been united. The Congress is the biggest party of the bloc. But did it play a role (in ensuring opposition unity)?" he asked. The month-long Monsoon Session of Parliament is set to commence on July 21. Ahead of the session, a meeting of the leaders of the INDIA bloc parties will be held online on Saturday evening to discuss the prevailing political situation in the country.
