Extreme heat warning in western Pennsylvania prompts First Alert Weather Day
In case you've lost count, today is going to be the third 90-degree day in a row for Pittsburgh. The extreme heat will be in place through the weekend.
Now, our highs will likely dip closer to 90 degrees starting Wednesday, but morning lows will remain elevated and warm enough that they won't allow those without air conditioning units to fully recover from the day-to-day rigors of hot weather being in place. Cool showers are one of the best ways to help your body cool down if faced with relentless heat.

The reason for the heat is a powerful ridge of high pressure that is right on top of us right now. This ridge will begin to drift to the south over the next 24 hours, putting us on the edge of the ridge, or what they call the "ring of fire." It sounds ominous. In some ways, it is as the "fire" part of the phrase references storms that develop during the afternoon on the periphery of the ridge each and every day.
The edge today is just north of I-80, and that's where there is a small severe weather chance today. The edge moves on top of our region on Wednesday. This means temperatures will likely quickly warm up to the 90s, but then with storm development, will likely remain at or below 90 degrees behind any early afternoon storms. This pattern will be in place from Wednesday through Saturday, and will likely be enough that we will not see an extension of the Extreme Heat Warning now in place through Wednesday.
Getting back to your forecast, highs today will hit the mid-90s with light westerly winds. You should see plenty of sunshine today. While there is an isolated rain chance for today, rain chances will be higher the rest of this week. I have noon temperatures already in the 90s. Humidity levels will also be extreme with dew points near 70 degrees all day long. The best rain chance today comes just before midnight.
Wednesday is going to be an interesting day as storm chances will cut into the heat during the afternoon. This will bring brief relief from the heat and should keep our highs closer to 90 degrees than 95 degrees.
Rain will be spotty, but those who see it will see downpours that could potentially lead to flash flooding. I have Wednesday's rain chance higher than the rest of the week, but rain chances will remain on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
I bring rain chances down on Sunday to isolated areas. Temperatures will remain near 90 degrees all the way through at least next Monday, with morning lows also remaining above 70 degrees through then as well.

Scattered to numerous storms expected in Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon
Parts of our area got slammed with strong storms and very heavy rain Friday afternoon and evening. Pittsburgh officially received 1.42" of rain with isolated higher amounts in other portions of our area, which led to localized flash flooding. We expect a similar pattern to result as we head into this afternoon and evening with more storms and locally heavy rain. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos A weakening cold front is located to our northwest, moving across the Great Lakes States and the Midwest. High temperatures and rain chances in the region KDKA Weather Center This front will eventually move into our northern counties by late morning to early afternoon, with the air ahead of it warming up and remaining very humid. We are not expecting record-breaking levels of atmospheric moisture like yesterday, but levels will certainly be much higher than usual for this time of year. Once temperatures at the surface hit around 85°F, which will be around 12-1 p.m., we expect storms to start forming around the I-80 to HWY 422 corridor and slowly move east and southeast. Storm threats on Saturday afternoon KDKA Weather Center The most likely timing for Pittsburgh to see storms today will be between 2-7 p.m. As storms pulse up and collapse, there will be a microburst wind potential with gusts upwards of 60mph along with small hail and very heavy rain. Storms should diminish after sunset with a loss of daytime heating. With light and variable winds overnight and high humidity, dense fog will develop during the predawn hours of Sunday morning. Low temperatures and rain chances in the region on Saturday night KDKA Weather Center The fog will mix out after sunrise Sunday morning, then temperatures will heat up well into the upper 80s to near 90°F in the afternoon. It will be quite uncomfortable with high levels of humidity, but the overall rain chances appear much lower. Sunday night into Monday morning, we will watch the approach of our next storm system. A strong southwest wind will transport very deep and high levels of moisture into our region. High temperatures expected on Sunday KDKA Weather Center As a matter of fact, atmospheric moisture levels are projected to break records, which will set us up for an environment of storms to produce heavy rain and flash flooding. Some severe storms are possible as well as we will have stronger winds aloft to help organize storms and allow them to persist longer. The most likely timing for storms will be after 12 p.m. Monday through early Tuesday morning, although some additional storm chances are likely midday and early afternoon Tuesday as the cold front moves through. Slightly drier and cooler air will move in for the middle part of next week. Another cold front will bring a chance of scattered showers and storms by Thursday. 'Wizard of Oz' experience: Woman speaks out after surviving tornado
A Florida woman is speaking out after she survived an EF-1 tornado that lifted her house off its foundation while she was inside. Deborah Mettler, 76, described the ordeal to ABC affiliate WFTS-TV in Tampa Bay, Florida, likening it to something straight out of a movie. 'It was really [akin to] a 'Wizard of Oz' experience,' Mettler said, referencing the tornado scene in the classic 1939 movie. The dramatic event unfolded in Largo, Florida, north of St. Petersburg, on June 25 and was caught on Mettler's neighbor Lori Gill's Ring camera. Footage shows the moment Mettler's mobile home was lifted nearly completely off the ground for about 15 seconds by 110 mph winds before slamming back down. Mettler was in her home for the entire time and said she didn't know what had happened at first. 'I didn't realize I was actually up in the air,' Mettler said. 'I was too busy doing somersaults and getting thrashed from one side of the room, through the wall, to the other side.' 'I ended up back here in the bedroom. I had been in what was a family room and stepped out, which was good, because it's no longer there at all,' she continued. 'So if I had stayed in that room, I don't know what would have happened to me.' Mettler walked away with only bruises after a neighbor helped her get out of her house. A neighbor named Kathy told WFTS, 'How she survived it, it is unbelievable." Photos and video footage show the extensive damage to the city. About 40 to 50 residences at Ranchero Village and 10 to 15 in the Bay Ranch Manufactured Home Communities had minor to severe storm-related damage.

After five straight days of 90-degree weather, Pittsburgh begins to see a slight cool down
Today should look similar to what it looked like yesterday, with a lot of dry time but storm chances returning for the afternoon. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos I expect storms to develop off of what are known as "outflow boundaries" once again today. These boundaries are ripples in the atmosphere that lift conditionally stable air just enough to kick off storms. Storms develop due to hot and humid air being "buoyant" and lifting. Sometimes this buoyant air is trapped at the surface by a layer of stable air. These outflow boundaries give this air the 'lift' it needs to break through the stable layer, and that's when storms develop. Back to the outflows, they give the storm every lift or punch to get through the stable layer of air and turn into storms. When that happens, storms develop, and if conditions are there, severe storms and downpours can happen. Excessive rain risk for western Pennsylvania KDKA Weather Center Rain chances both this morning and early in the afternoon should keep highs in the 80s today and not the 90s. Morning temperatures remain in the low 70s, and today will be the sixth day in a row with temperatures remaining above 70° in Pittsburgh. I have noon temperatures in the mid-80s. Winds should be light today, coming in out of the south. Looking ahead, we should see some rain on Saturday too. Rain totals expected through early Saturday morning KDKA Weather Center Right now, model data is showing less rain & storms tomorrow than today, but this has been what model data has done over the past couple of days. Data has consistently underplayed instability coming into each day until the last moment, and then on later runs shows correctly the instability driving storms. Saturday is included under a level one out of four risk of flash flooding. That may get bumped up, depending on what is expected along with what falls today. We finally see temperatures dip below 70 degrees in Pittsburgh late Saturday or Sunday morning. Highs on Sunday should hit the upper 80s. Another round of rain and storms will be around on Monday with highs in the mid-80s.
