Brutal heatwave hits players and fans at FIFA Club World Cup across America

MIAMI GARDENS, FL — You can hear the music thumping inside the stadium, blaring outside of it. It's only natural to feel the anticipation build. 'Let's get down, let's get down to business' is the catchy Tiësto hook that plays before every FIFA Club World Cup match. This was my sixth time hearing it at Hard Rock Stadium since the tournament began, but my first as a paying patron for a match between Brazil's Fluminense and South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday, June 25. My excitement, however, was quickly hit with a snag before I got past the security gates to get my ticket scanned. FIFA says 'fans are welcome to bring empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles, up to one liter (33.8 oz) into the stadiums.' A security attendant told me to finish mine before I could enter. Okay, understandable — I thought — since the policy is 'empty.' I was three-quarters of the way done with mine. I had bariatric surgery nine months ago, so it was a test to finish my superfood-infused water with a smaller stomach. But I was able to. Then, another attendant reached for my bottle and tossed it in a garbage can. 'I thought FIFA allows a water bottle,' I said. 'Not here,' she replied as the bottle fell on top of others in the can. A mistake on the attendant's part, and since the tournament began FIFA has been in communication with stadium staffs to address these misunderstandings and confusion on entry policies. FIFA also released a statement last week regarding the extreme heat across the United States, which adds to mounting concerns about player safety and fan welfare during the Club World Cup and next year's FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico. 'FIFA's top priority is the health of everyone involved in football,' a spokesman said. 'FIFA will continue to monitor the weather conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.' The noon and 3 p.m. start times to matches have also been an issue at the height of the heat, providing primetime viewing in other parts of the world. 'I think it's part and parcel of football," English captain Harry Kane said after Bayern Munich's win over Boca Juniors. You have to be able to adapt. ... There's something special about these World Cup games, and next year will be the same. "When you come off that pitch and you're sweating and you're dripping and you're cramping and you've given everything on the pitch – there's a special feeling inside, especially when you win.' Meanwhile, German giant Borussia Dortmund refused to have players sit on the bench directly in the sun in Cincinnati for their June 21 noon match. It was 87°F (30.5°C). 'Our subs watched the first half from inside the locker room to avoid the blazing sun at TQL Stadium – never seen that before, but in this heat, it absolutely makes sense,' the team said, sharing a photo of players in the locker room on social media. Watch FIFA Club World Cup free on DAZN. Sign up now. Here are a few things FIFA could consider before the World Cup next year to address the heat concerns: – Install mist systems and climate-controlled benches, like NFL teams use during late-summer and winter games, at hosting venues. It might not directly help the players on the field, outside of their cooling breaks in the 30th and 75th minutes, when they hydrate, eat an electrolyte chewable and/or apply a wet towel on themselves. But it's a good starting point. – Only four of the 11 American venues hosting World Cup games are indoors and should be prioritized for day games: Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, AT&T Stadium outside Dallas, TX, Houston's NRG Stadium and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Teams should also get a proceeding night match if they play an early game in the sun. – FIFA should coordinate with stadium vendors to sell water at cheaper price points. MetLife Stadium sells water for $5, while Hard Rock Stadium for $6. Maybe, FIFA and Ticketmaster could consider a nominal water fee on ticket sales, and just give fans water for free at the concession stands. Hey, just thinking out loud. – Ticketmaster and other ticket-selling platforms should be transparent and communicate to consumers when and where seats are shaded at stadiums, so they can make informed purchases. Club World Cup attendance amid heat wave I've attended events at Hard Rock Stadium, as a patron and journalist, for nearly 20 years. I bought a resell ticket on Ticketmaster in section 106, row 2 for $37, figuring I could help a seller offload their purchase. My seat was also covered by the stadium's canopy for the entire match. But not everyone was so comfortable. Fluminense fan Matt Benac sat with his back braced up against a concrete wall inside the stadium concourse, waving his black hat in front of his face flushed red, trying to relieve himself from the blazing sun at halftime. Benac was among five sections of Fluminense fans baking in the lower level where there's no escape from the sunlight unless intercepted by a cloud. There weren't any on this day. 'It's too hot for me to handle,' said Benac, who is from Rio de Janiero, where Fluminense plays. 'I'm just out here sitting in the shade trying to have a good time. But it's hard with the sun out there. It's getting me exhausted.' Despite the conditions, football loving fans will still show up for their favorite teams – and pay the price of bottled water multiple times. Fluminense fan Rafael Daceo held four empty cups under his arm while shirtless, standing next to his girlfriend Carolina Casaes inside the stadium corridor. They moved from Rio de Janiero seven months ago to be students at Madison College in Wisconsin, and were sunburnt from a trip to the beach a day earlier. More than welcoming the sun, they attended the Fluminense match because being a fan is in their blood. Daceo said his father is a Fluminense fan, and his grandfather before them. Casaes said her entire family was watching the match back home in Rio. 'I'm feeling like I'm here with my dad, my brother and my step-father because they love Fluminense. I'm feeling like I'm with them. They are watching, too,' Casaes said. 'I'm so grateful to be here. I feel like I'm in Brazil. It's not the same, but the energy is the same. We really miss Brazil right now. Here, we feel a little bit of it.' Just participating in Club World Cup has brought pride to the players and their fans. The Fluminense fans cheered until the very end, even raising their intensity in the final 10 minutes of the match as they finished a scoreless draw against the Sundowns but advanced to the Round of 16. Sundowns players even danced on the pitch in front of their supporters in the stands, after the final whistle concluded their participation in the tournament. Vuyani Makabe, a South African from Vancouver who flew across the continent for the Miami match, was filled with pride watching his team. 'I never thought as a kid my Mamelodi Sundowns, who I grew up supporting, would actually be competing in a World Cup, and me watching them in Miami,' Makabe said. 'This is a dream come true.'

Matheus Nunes throws hat into ring for permanent role in Pep Guardiola's Manchester City defence

Pep Guardiola has received the green light from Matheus Nunes to be deployed in any position required, amid talk of him becoming Manchester City's mainstay right-back. The Portugal international has been one of the key standout performers at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup for Manchester City, stepping into the mainstay right-back role after Rico Lewis' red card on matchday one. Advertisement Nunes operation in the position is nothing new however, building upon a run in the team on the right of a back-four across the course of the second-half of last season, and will be hopeful of retaining the slot heading towards the 2025/26 campaign. In the background, there is believed to be a keen interest from club officials to recruit a new right-back via the transfer market, and Newcastle United's Tino Livramento is believed to be the primary target of sporting director, Hugo Viana. However, in the meantime, with FIFA having issued Rico Lewis with a three-match ban at the Club World Cup, Nunes certainly has a job to do and a clear opportunity to impress Guardiola and club officials over his ability to hold down the right-back position. Speaking to reporters after Manchester City's 2-5 win over Juventus and his own individually impressive performance in Orlando, Matheus Nunes was keen to insist upon his willingness to work under Guardiola to the best of his abilities no matter what the positional plan. Advertisement 'I mean wherever the manager puts me I'm always going to try and do my best,' Nunes insisted. 'You also have other players that have done different positions as well and done well in all of them,' he added. 'So, I mean it doesn't matter where he puts me on, I'm always going to try to do my best. That's what I did on Thursday and happily [I think] I did good.' Despite the changes made to Pep Guardiola's squad during the ongoing summer transfer window, Matheus Nunes believes there is stability within the camp with long-standing members maintaining the fundamentals of the footballing philosophy within the club. 'I think the base [of the squad] is quite the same. I mean, they've been here for 10 years already. Everyone knows, like everything,' Matheus Nunes explained. Advertisement 'The training, the way the manager wants us to press; the way he wants us to attack. Of course, in different games you have different ways of doing it. But I mean now we are just used to everything because, I mean, we've been together for so long.' Next up for Matheus Nunes and his Manchester City teammates is a clash against Al Ain in the last-16 stage of the FIFA Club World Cup, having secured top spot in Group G to position themselves on the left side of the bracket. A quarter-final could then await against the winner of Inter against Fluminense, while a potential final would involve Pep Guardiola's side against one of Palmeiras, Botafogo, Benfica, and Chelsea.

Is Michael Olise one of Bayern Munich's best signings of the modern era?

On April 26, Bayern Munich took a gigantic step towards securing their 34th Bundesliga title after demolishing Mainz 3-0 at the Allianz Arena – they would proceed to draw 3-3 to RB Leipzig, only to claim the championship due to Bayer Leverkusen's stalemate vs Freiburg. After reclaiming the title from Leverkusen's grasp, Bayern would proceed to beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-0 before closing out the league campaign with a 4-0 victory at Hoffenheim. Arguably the finest player on the pitch vs Mainz was none other than Michael Olise. He worked his magic across the 90 minutes for the Bavarians, helping to instigate Leroy Sané's opening goal and driving Mainz' defense crazy with his sensational dribbling skills and delicate changes of direction, and he even drew an early yellow card from Philipp Mwene. And in the 40th minute, Olise picked the ball up on the right flank before wiggling inside and whipping a devilish left-footed effort into the near post. To put the cherry on top, Olise delivered a splendid corner kick towards the near post, where Eric Dier was ready to head home in the 84th minute. Advertisement It was a world-class display from Olise, who won 9 out of 14 ground duels, completed 33 out of 40 passes (including three key passes), created two big chances, and won seven fouls. He also did his job out of possession, winning one out of one aerial duel, completing two interceptions, and registering one tackle. And it was yet more evidence why Olise is proving to be one of Bayern's best signings in recent times. Born in London to a Nigerian father and French-Algerian mother, Olise enjoyed spells at Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City before making the move to Reading. It was here in Berkshire where Olise established himself as one of the best players in England's second division and was named as the EFL Young Player of the 2020/21 Season. However, just like Jimmy Conrad, he would have to carefully bide his time before making the step up to the highest level. 'He was very talented at the time, but I noticed that he needed to grow up a bit,' stated Everton goalkeeper João Virgínia, who played alongside Olise during the first half of the 2019/20 season. 'Once he matured, he became the player he is now. You could definitely see at the time that he had the talent, the speed, the dribbling skills…he's such a good player to watch and seeing him perform the way he is now is great.' These impressive displays caught the attention of Crystal Palace, who signed him for £8.37m in 2021. Over the next three years, Olise emerged as a vital cog in Palace's attack, becoming their youngest Premier League goalscorer since Clinton Morrison in 1998 as well as the youngest player to assist three goals from open play in a single Premier League match. Similarly to Fluminense's Jhon Arias, Olise boasted a penchant for not just setting his teammates in dangerous goalscoring positions, but also finding the back of the net with a ferocious effort. He became the first Palace player to register 10 assists in a single Premier League season in 2023, and in 2024, he racked up 10 goals and six assists in 19 appearances and was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year. While plenty of Premier League sides like Arsenal and Manchester United registered an interest in signing him, it was Bayern who managed to pry him away for €60m including add-ons. Advertisement It hasn't taken long for him to make a name for himself in Bavaria. Olise needed just two minutes to assist Kingsley Coman's goal after making his debut vs SSV Ulm in the DFB-Pokal, and he's built on that momentum and emerged as a vital performer for Vincent Kompany's Bayern, racking up 17 goals and 21 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions. Thanks to his world-class dribbling skills and his unique blend of technical finesse and creativity, Olise can play just about anywhere in attack and make an impact, but he's mainly favoured the right side of Kompany's 4-2-3-1. Olise leads all Bundesliga players with 15 assists and 12.51 Expected Assists, whilst he also sits atop the league with 32 big chances created. To put Olise's brilliance in perspective, he has created 32 big chances in the Bundesliga, nearly twice as many as second-placed Florian Wirtz (17). At 23 years of age, he has established himself as one of the most creative threats in the Premier League and the Bundesliga, and he has beaten out plenty of competition to emerge as one of the first names on the team sheet. It's little surprise why Olise has finally begun to draw the attention of the national team. After impressing for France in their silver-place finish in last summer's Summer Olympics alongside the likes of Rayan Cherki and Desire Doue, Olise has finally managed to make his mark for France's senior team. Bayern Munich are going through a transition in attack. Leroy Sane has left Bayern for Galatasaray, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry could be headed for the exit door this summer, while Thomas Müller has confirmed his departure after 25 years at the club. However, in Olise, they have a player who is capable of leading the charge for Bayern's attack not just in the long term, but the short term as well. And after winning the first trophy of his career, he's hungrier than ever to add another piece of silverware with the FIFA Club World Cup underway. Having finished second in their group behind Portuguese giants Benfica, Bayern will head to Miami on Sunday to face Brazilian powerhouse Flamengo – if they win, they will meet either PSG or Inter Miami.
