BBC News2 days ago
Rescuers in Chile are continuing to search for four miners trapped in a mine that collapsed after an earthquake two days ago, after the body of one was found. The state-owned Codelco company said that human remains have been found at its El Teniente copper mine, about 70km (43 miles) south-east of the capital Santiago. The firm says that rescuer efforts are continuing. The fate of the other four employees is unclear. The collapse of some of the mine's underground tunnels was caused by a 4.2 magnitude tremor on Thursday. The trapped miners at the time were working deep below the surface.
One person had been reported killed after the earthquake, with five trapped in the mine.Codelco said that the victim found in the mine on Saturday still needs to be identified, but the families of the five trapped miners had been notified."This discovery fills us with sadness, but it also tells us that we are in the right place, that the strategy we followed led us to them," El Teniente Division's general manager Andres Music said in a statement.Rescue teams have been using heavy machinery in an effort to clear the blocked passageways to try to reach the miners. Mr Music said the rescuers were hoping to be proceeding at a rate of 15-20m (49-66ft) every 24 hours.El Teniente is the world's largest underground copper mine.It is located high in the Andes mountains in central Chile.

Deputy rescues alligator from backyard pool with bare hands: ‘Florida grown at its finest!'

A sheriff's deputy rescued an alligator from a backyard pool with his bare hands, impressing onlookers who called him, ' Florida grown at its finest!' Just over a week ago, on July 25, Deputy Nathan Richardson from St. Johns County Sheriff's Office kicked out an 'unexpected guest' lounging in the pool of a St. Augustine home. Police body camera video showed Richardson using a pool skimmer to guide the small gator to the edge of the pool before he grabbed it by the neck. The gator thrashed in the water before getting picked up and even managed to escape and tried to make a run for it on the deck before Richardson grabbed it again a few seconds later. 'I gotcha. You're fine,' the deputy reassured the hissing gator. 'I know. You're super mad.' As Richardson picked the gator up, one hand on its neck and the other holding its tail, the group of people at the house can be heard saying, 'You go' and 'Wow.' One of the onlookers joked, 'Obviously, you grew up here.' And it's true. The sheriff's office confirmed to The Independent Richardson is a Florida native. Upon leaving the home, someone can be heard saying, 'Florida grown at its finest!' Richardson is then filmed holding the gator by its tail while opening his patrol car to load it into the back seat. For extra safety, the deputy buckled the gator into its seat. Luckily for the gator, its trespassing adventure did not result in a ride to the station but to a nearby pond. 'The alligator wasn't happy its pool time was over, or about the ride in the patrol car, but it was buckled in and safely relocated to a nearby pond by Deputy Richardson,' the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post. This wasn't Richardson's first encounter with a gator, the sheriff's office told The Independent, although they weren't sure how many he had caught before. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says massive human population growth in the state, paired with a demand for waterfront homes and increasingly popular water-related activities, can cause more frequent human interactions with alligators. The commission advises people to never feed the gators and to keep their distance if they see one. People should also only swim in designated swimming areas during the day and keep their pets on a leash and away from the water.

Confused toddler wanders city streets in diaper after mother abandoned her at home to go and party

A three-year-old girl was rescued from a street in southeastern Brazil after she was found wandering along crying for her 19-year-old mother, who left her home to go party. Constructions workers were repairing a street Santo André, São Paulo during the earlier hours of Sunday when they spotted the child wearing only diapers and called the Military Police. Surveillance video footage showed the barefoot girl reaching a corner at the intersection Peró Vaz Street when she stopped as a car sped by at 1:31 am. She stood over a manhole cover for a couple of seconds and went to cross the street when she suddenly began to cry. 'I want my mommy,' she repeatedly said. The construction crew alerted the police and got help from local residents, who provided clothing to cover up the girl. 'She was blue from the cold,' one of the workers, Rafael Cruz, told SBT News. 'She just kept saying she wanted her mommy.' The child's maternal grandmother appeared on the scene about an hour after she was found. The girl's mother did not return home until around 4am and was placed under arrest after she confessed to abandoning her daughter to attend the party. The mother is facing one count of child abandonment. 'The woman returned home and confessed that she had left her daughter sleeping to go to a nearby funk dance,' the São Paulo Department of Public Safety said in a statement. Her daughter was placed under the custody of the São Paulo child services agency. The mother's stepfather told SBT News that it was the first time that she had ever left the child alone at home. 'She's wrong, I agree,' he said. 'There's a child involved and she has to think about her.'
