Trade pact lifts market sentiment as Sensex rallies 540 points

India's equity market staged a strong rally on Wednesday, buoyed by favourable global cues following the announcement of a bilateral trade deal between the US and Japan. Additionally, progress toward finalising the India-UK FTA has further contributed to the constructive outlook. The BSE Sensex jumped 0.66% or 539.83 points to settle at 82,726.64 while the NSE Nifty gained 159 points or 0.63% to settle at 25,219.90. The broader markets posted a mixed performance, with the Nifty Midcap 100 advancing 0.34%, while the Small Cap index closed flat. 'Continued advancements in global trade negotiations are expected to alleviate near-term trade tensions and foster greater market stability. While elevated valuations remain a concern, the prevailing market strength indicates potential for near-term earnings recovery,' said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited. On the sectoral front, the Realty index underperformed, shedding 2.6%, followed by the Media (-0.9%) and FMCG (-0.5%) indices. Indian farmers shifting to maize cultivation as soybean, cotton acreage shrinks

Farmers across the country have shifted significantly towards maize cultivation while areas dedicated to soybean and cotton farming are declining amid lower-than-expected realisations in the markets. As the country enters the last leg of kharif sowing, India has reported 708.31 lakh hectares of sowing as of July 21, as compared to 680.38 lakh hectares of last year, of which maize recorded the highest jump — from last year's 61.73 lakh hectares to 71.21 lakh hectares this year. However, oilseeds reported a 6 per cent dip, which is 156.76 lakh hectares as against last year's 162.80 lakh hectares. Soybean, the main kharif oilseed, was sown over 111.67 lakh hectares this year compared to last year's 118.96 lakh hectares. Cotton, the major lint crop, has also seen a decrease in the acreage from 102.05 of 202-25 to the present 98.55 lakh hectares of this year. The Solvent and Extractors Association (SEA) – the apex body of edible oil solvent and extractors companies – has expressed concerns about the potential dip in soybean, India's main summer-sown oilseed crop, acreage nationally. 'Soybean acreage has dipped by over 6 per cent compared to the previous year, possibly due to shifting crop preferences and regional weather variability. This trend merits close observation, as soybean remains a crucial pillar in India's oilseed economy and a major source of oil and meal,' Sanjeeve Asthana, President, SEA, said. Vilas Uphade, a farmer from Latur district of Maharashtra, noted that soybean is currently trading at Rs 4,000 per quintal in the wholesale market. 'This is against the government-declared Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 5,328, which is even before the new crop has entered the market. We are expecting a bumper harvest this year, so I worry about what the price conditions will be post the harvest,' he said. With the kharif sowing entering its last phase, prices might see further slide. The demand for maize has increased due to its use as a feedstock for ethanol production. Centre okays Market Intervention Price for Totapuri mangoes

Vijayawada: Against the backdrop of falling price of Totapuri variety of mangoes assuming political colour, the Centre has approved Market Intervention Price for the produce which will be a major relief for farmers. The ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare issues orders, approving Price Deficiency Payment (PDP) under Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for Totapuri market mango season 2025-26. Minister of state for rural development and communications, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for approving PDP under MIS. This will cover 1.62 lakh tonne mangoes with Market Intervention Price (MIP) of Rs 1,490.73 per quintal. The Centre and state will pay MIP on a 50:50 basis. The farmers will get direct benefit transfer support. 'This move will safeguard farmers against price crashes, ensure fair returns, and strengthen rural livelihoods,' said Chandra Sekhar. He told media persons in Delhi on Tuesday that the state government has already released Rs 260 crore to pay an extra Rs 4 per kg to Totapuri mango farmers facing a crisis due to a sharp fall in prices. The Centre on Tuesday issued orders to reimburse Rs 130 crore out of Rs 260 crore announced by the state government. Civil aviation minister K Ram Mohan Naidu, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and state agriculture minister K Atchannaidu had requested the Centre in this regard. Chandra Sekhar said that for the first time, the Centre has announced MIS for mangoes. He said a huge drop in the market price of Totapuri mango this year caused huge losses to farmers. He hoped that the Centre would continue the support under MIS in future, if necessary. The state government last week permitted the Director of Horticulture and Sericulture (DoH and S) to procure 6.5 lakh tonnes of the Totapuri variety for the current season to provide the growers a remunerative price. This will ensure a minimum procurement price of Rs 12 per kg. While pulp processing companies are contributing Rs 8 per kg, the government is providing the remaining Rs 4. The move is expected to help the farmers in sustaining mango cultivation in the combined Chittoor district and preventing distress sales.
