How to become a Wimbledon ball boy or girl and how much they get paid

Metro30-06-2025
The likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka might be the stars of the show at Wimbledon 2025.
But that show would not be possible without the tireless work of the tennis ball boys and girls.
And it is not just the players who are at the top of their game over the fortnight of action, with both the ball boys and ball girls having made it through a rigorous selection process and military-style training.
So, exactly how do they become Wimbledon ball boys and girls and how much do they get paid?
Wimbledon ball boys and girls are selected from a number of London schools, with approximately 250 in use throughout the Championships at an average age of 15.
This comes from a pool of around 1,000 applicants.
Roughly 170 are selected from year 9 and year 10 and a further 80 are picked from around 250 ball boys and girls from previous years.
Training starts in February at the Raynes Park Community Sports Ground near Wimbledon in London.
The ball boys and girls train once a fortnight and attend four sessions at the indoor courts before Easter.
After the Easter break, training is held at Wimbledon and lasts until June.
The weekly training sessions last between two and two-and-a-half hours with between 50 and 60 children in attendance at each session.
Once the tournament starts, six teams of six are selected to work on Centre and No.1 Courts, six teams of six rotate around the other show courts and the remainder switch between the rest of the courts. More Trending
The usual routine for the ball boys and girls is one hour on and one hour off.
Ball boys and girls working at Wimbledon earn around £200 for the fortnight in SW19.
They also get to keep their iconic Ralph Lauren uniforms at the end of the tournament.

Why Morgan Gibbs-White didn't travel with Nottingham Forest squad for pre-season in Portugal

Tottenham are still in the dark over Morgan Gibbs-White's future after Nottingham Forest quickly shut down his move to north London over claims of an "illegal approach", despite activating his £60m release clause Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White has not travelled with the team for their pre-season camp in Portugal due to a "personal matter", amid his club's ongoing transfer row with Tottenham. ‌ Spurs and Forest began a dispute over Gibbs-White after the north London club triggered his £60m release clause and even set up a medical for the England international. But Forest quickly slammed the brakes on the deal and claimed that Tottenham had not been granted permission to the speak to the player - saying they would be consulting their lawyers after their "illegal approach". ‌ Forest have since reported Spurs to the Premier League, with the dispute ongoing and the move considered off as things stand - though the move could yet be resurrected later down the line. ‌ Gibbs-White has since returned to training but is understood to be keen on joining Thomas Frank's men - and reportedly wanted his future solved by this week, before Forest jetted out to Portugal. Gibbs-White did not board the plane heading to their pre-season training camp on Monday. His fiancee, Britney De Villiers, posted a photo from a hospital bed on her Instagram on Sunday night. De Villiers, who is heavily pregnant, uploaded the picture with the caption: "To all the mamas who are dealing with or have dealt with a high risk pregnancy, my heart really goes out to you and I want you to know you're not alone. "This has been one of the hardest things I've dealt with and I just don't really remember a time I wasn't overwhelmed with stress." It's understood Forest have allowed Gibbs-White to stay with his family. He is expected to join up with the rest of his Forest team-mates later this week once he is ready. He played the first half of Forest's 0-0 draw at Chesterfield last week and was given a warm reception by fans. It's understood the 25-year-old has displayed an exemplary attitude amid the transfer saga but that he still wants clarity on his future either way. ‌ Gibbs-White has less than two years remaining on his deal at the City Ground and has shown no indication he wants to renew his contract amid the huge interest in his signature - including from Manchester City. It's believed Tottenham are considering submitting a second bid of £65m in the hopes it would change Forest's position, but it's not yet clear whether the club would be open to negotiations amid the fierce row. Forest have sold Anthony Elanga to Newcastle for £55m and are reluctant to lose two key players in the same transfer window.

What is next for Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois?

Usyk sent Dubois to the canvas with a vicious left-handed punch titled Ivan to win back his IBF belt and add it to his WBA, WBC and WBO titles. Here, the PA news agency takes a look at what next for Usyk and what this result means for the blue-riband division. Warrior ⚔️#UsykDubois2 — Queensberry Promotions (@Queensberry) July 20, 2025 Briton's Dubois is back in familiar territory and required to rebuild his career. The 27-year-old has managed it twice before after his shock loss to Joe Joyce in 2020 and his first defeat to Usyk two years ago. Frank Warren confirmed his fighter will not return for at least six months and a domestic affair with the likes of Derek Chisora or Dillian Whyte seems most likely at this point. A post shared by Usyk. The Cat. Oleksandr (@usykaa) Usyk proceeded to namecheck Chisora, Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker in the ring immediately as potential opponents after Saturday's 24th victory of his undefeated professional career. The WBO has already implied that Usyk must next defend that belt against Parker. If Usyk, who has suggested his next fight would be his last, was to prefer a trilogy with Fury, he would have to vacate his WBO title and lose undisputed status again. Fury wasted no time calling out Usyk after his victory as the 'Gypsy King' posted an Instagram video in the early hours of Sunday morning on a run. Fury retired after he lost to Usyk for a second time last December, but maintains he won those bouts and has already revealed he will return to the ring in 2026. Queensberry promoter Warren says Fury would love to fight Usyk at Wembley so it is all eyes on what the Ukrainian decides. 🇬🇧⚔️ Oleksandr Usyk is now 8-0 against UK fighters: ✅ Tony Bellew✅ Derek Chisora✅ Anthony Joshua (x2)✅ Tyson Fury (x2)✅ Daniel Dubois (x2) — Ring Magazine (@ringmagazine) July 19, 2025 If Usyk does decide to fight Parker next, it would open the door for a long overdue Battle of Britain between Fury and Joshua. Whilst the duo no longer boast the status as world heavyweight champion, it is a contest that would draw huge interest and comfortably sell-out at Wembley. Joshua has been linked with a fight against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, but the best way to add to his legacy would be to take on compatriot Fury – even if it should have happened years earlier.
