China's EV battery king CATL joins with Sinopec to build swapping-station network
The company, based in Ningde, in east China's Fujian province, will partner with oil giant
Sinopec Group and smart EV assembler
Nio to create a charging network covering the mainland, it said in a filing with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange on Monday.
In addition, the company said Hong Kong and Macau would soon see their first swap stations, which allow owners of compatible EVs to exchange a spent battery pack for a fully charged one in just 100 seconds.
CATL and Sinopec committed to an 'extensive and long-term strategic partnership' to build a 'battery-swapping ecosystem across the whole nation', according to the agreement signed early this month. CATL said it aimed to build 30,000 swapping stations, without giving a specific timetable.
'CATL's efforts to promote battery swapping nationwide, particularly with Sinopec as a partner, will convince more EV makers and drivers of the advantage of using this technology because it is faster and more efficient,' said Davis Zhang, a senior executive at Suzhou Hazardtex, a supplier of specialised batteries. 'As more stations are built, an increasing number of new models will adopt swappable batteries to attract car buyers.'

Swapping technology aims to ease range anxiety. At present it takes at least 10 minutes via ultra-fast charging technology to give an EV 400km of driving range. However, BYD has unveiled a charging technology that it claims can provide the same range in
just five minutes

CATL, BYD partner with Australia's BHP to electrify mining industry
Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) and BYD have signed initial agreements with Australian mining giant BHP to collaborate on battery technology and electrification of mining operations, as both mainland firms explore new growth avenues amid a weakening outlook for electric vehicles (EVs). Melbourne-based BHP said on Monday that it had signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with CATL, the world's largest battery maker, and FinDreams Battery (FDB), a fully owned subsidiary of BYD, the world's largest EV maker, to collaborate on battery development for mining equipment, locomotives and fast-charging infrastructure. CATL and FDB will also focus on energy storage systems and battery recycling options, leveraging BHP's copper operations to enhance recycling processes and create sustainable value chains in the mining sector. BHP said its partnership with BYD involved evaluating the Chinese EV maker's commercial and light vehicles for mining applications to reduce diesel use. This would accelerate a sustainable and efficient future while creating long-term value and transform the global mining industry through innovation, he added. The signing of the MOU represented a pivotal milestone for accelerating decarbonisation across the global resources sector, said Jack Li, a general manager at FDB.

Chinese EV maker Zeekr plugs in to hybrids to tap into soaring sales, expand model range
Zeekr, a premium electric vehicle (EV) unit of Geely Auto, has jumped on the hybrid technology bandwagon to widen its customer base amid rising competition in the world's largest automotive market. Advertisement The Hangzhou-based company has become the latest mainland Chinese EV assembler to launch plug-in hybrids, leaving Shanghai-headquartered Nio as the only domestic company making pure EVs. US carmaker Tesla, which produces cars on the mainland, is another maker of pure EVs. 'Nearly all Chinese carmakers have a diverse product portfolio to compete against Tesla now,' said Gao Shen, an independent analyst in Shanghai. 'Plug-in cars target some customers who are either budget conscious or nervous about electric cars' range.' The 9X, Zeekr's first hybrid model, will use the Freevoy Super Hybrid battery produced by Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), giving the SUV a range of 380km. Hybrid cars normally utilise the battery for short distances ranging from 100km to 200km, and switch to fuel for longer drives. 10:08 How Chinese companies have pulled ahead of Tesla in the electric vehicle race How Chinese companies have pulled ahead of Tesla in the electric vehicle race Zeekr said in a statement on Wednesday that its hybrid technology 'sets new standards for long-range plug-in hybrid [cars], including best-in-class charging speeds, acceleration and vibration control for both highway cruising and urban experiences'.

Hong Kong IPOs gather pace with proceeds seen doubling in second half, KPMG says
Hong Kong's stock exchange could experience a surge in new listings in the second half of the year, with proceeds estimated to more than double from the preceding six months, following efforts to promote the city's capital markets , according to KPMG. Between 100 and 230 companies were expected to launch initial public offerings (IPOs) and raise between HK$200 billion (US$25.5 billion) and HK$250 billion from investors, said Irene Chu, a partner and head of new economy and life sciences at KPMG China. The final tally would depend on market conditions, she added. The city regained the crown as the world's busiest venue for IPOs in the first half, when 42 companies raised US$13.5 billion from IPOs, according to market data. Better sentiment, market re-rating and diversification away from US-dollar assets helped fuel the eightfold growth from a year earlier. 'Considering the strong momentum we saw in the first half, we expect the amount raised in the second half to at least double,' Chu said at the annual China Conference organised by the South China Morning Post on Tuesday. There were 219 applicants in the IPO pipeline, she added, including a record 210 making a beeline for the main board versus 86 at the end of 2024. 01:44 China's largest EV battery maker CATL celebrates strong debut at Hong Kong stock market China's largest EV battery maker CATL celebrates strong debut at Hong Kong stock market Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing (HKEX), the bourse operator, has been courting global firms to list in the city by stepping up efforts to recognise foreign stock exchanges.
