THOUSANDS of households can apply for free vouchers worth up to £173 towards their energy and food bills from today. Nottingham City Council has reopened applications for help from its Household Support Fund scheme, which is aimed at helping vulnerable residents with day-to-day living costs. 1 The Household Support Fund is a Government scheme that has allocated £742million worth of funding to councils in England. Each council can decide how it spends the money, with some offering free cash while others are providing vouchers or working with local organisations. Nottingham City Council has chosen to provide vouchers towards energy and food bills, as well as vouchers for families with children who receive free school meals. You can start applying for these from today. This round of funding will be available until March 31 2026, with applications for the supermarket and energy vouchers opening on different dates throughout the year. They are: Today at 10am September 1 October 6 November 3 December 1 The council is handing out 800 energy vouchers worth £98 and 1,500 supermarket vouchers worth £75 at each release. It's also providing a one-off voucher worth £50 over the summer holiday period for children who receive free school meals. The local authority said this is the last time the voucher will be provided as funding has been reduced. Families who get free school meals can still get half term support through the Holiday Activity Fund. How can I apply? It's not clear exactly who will be eligible for the vouchers but if you're struggling it could be worth applying. Use this link here to start your application: If your application for a supermarket voucher is approved, you will receive an email with a link to get your eVoucher. Click the link and then choose which retailer you want to buy the eVoucher from. You can then either print off the voucher or use the digital version in store. You must use the voucher within four weeks otherwise it will expire and not be reissued. What about if I don't live in Nottingham? You may be eligible to get support through the HSF if you don't live in Nottingham. However, it depends on where you live. This is because each council sets its own eligibility criteria. The Household Support Fund, which was first established in 2021, is designed to help those on low incomes, benefits or classed as vulnerable. So if you fit into any of these three categories, the chances are you will qualify for support. The best thing to do is visit your local council's website where most have a page dedicated to the Household Support Fund. Or, you can contact your local council's customer service helpline to inquire. The latest round of Household Support Fund runs until March 31, 2026, and some councils have already opened up for applications. Households in Birmingham are being urged to apply for £200 payments. Meanwhile, low income households in North Northamptonshire can apply for supermarket vouchers worth up to £320. Other help if you're on a low income It's worth checking if you're eligible for benefits if you haven't already - it could boost your bank balance by thousands of pounds a year. If you're struggling with the cost of food, check where your nearest food bank is. The Trussell Trust has hundreds of food banks across the UK, and you can find your nearest one here - The Trust's food banks issue emergency parcels to people who cannot afford to cover costs themselves. Plans to build the UK's largest battery storage facility have been a renewable energy firm, wants to build a 450 megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system near Corsham, Wiltshire, that would store energy produced by solar farms and wind turbines to support the grid when company said the facility, which it plans to build at Neston Park Estate, could supply enough energy to power one million homes, five times the number of homes in Wiltshire, for an hour. If planning permission is granted by Wiltshire Council, Grenergy said it hoped to start work on the facility next year and have it operational by the end of 2027. If given the go-ahead, it would become the largest facility of its kind, topping the Lakeside Energy Park in Drax, North Yorkshire, which has a capacity of 100MW, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).The facility would be half a mile from the village of Neston and residents have raised concerns about the visual impact of the development, the noise caused by cooling fans, and the risk of resident said it would have an impact locally and in surrounding villages, adding that it "is a cause of concern for us all". 'Reduce risk' The facility would include 108 shipping container-sized batteries along with an electricity substation, security fencing, lighting and CCTV said it would carry out "rigorous health and safety assessments"."The design of the system at Brockleaze has been optimised according to guidance to reduce any potential risk," it on the application can be made to Wiltshire Council before 28 August.
