NRL fans fume over missed Reece Walsh act as Bennett rocked over 18th man drama
Peter Mamouzelos was selected as 18th man, but was a late withdrawal after suffering from delayed concussion symptoms from his head knock two weeks ago. And this left the Rabbitohs struggling to field a full team and they were hammered 60-14 after Walsh and Kotoni Staggs led the Broncos riot.
Latrell Mitchell, Cameron Murray, Campbell Graham and Cody Walker are all out injured with a number of other stars missing in the squad. Bennett has been dealing with an extensive list of absentees all year and Mamouzelos' late withdrawal left him in a position he had never been before.
South Sydney had no one else they could place in the 18th man role with too many injuries in the squad leaving them depleted. Jamie Humphreys was also a late withdrawal due to concussion. To make matters worse for Bennett's side, they lost dummy-half Ryan Gray to a shoulder injury early in the match.
And Bennett was nearly lost for words having seen it all in his 38 year coaching career. "I haven't gone close to that," Bennett said post-match about playing with no 18th man.
"We had eight or nine at Redcliffe last year at one stage, but we're on 13 today. We didn't have an 18th man tonight. The 18th man pulled out before the game. (Mamouzelos) had headaches from concussion two weeks ago and he'd been cleared and passed all the tests but he still wasn't well. We made the decision before the game not to put him on the bench."
The Rabbitohs and Bennett have now lost nine straight games and are entrenched on the bottom of the ladder. He has never received a wooden spoon since starting coaching in the premiership competition in 1987.
With one bye still to go, the Rabbitohs face the Eels and Titans in their remaining fixtures. The Titans are also equal-last on the ladder on 16 points with a game against the Penrith Panthers this weekend. While their was no lack of effort from the Rabbitohs contingent in the 60-14 thrashing, they would have felt aggrieved after Walsh faced no sanction for a questionable tackle in the 70th minute.
Reece Walsh escaped penalty for questionable tackle
Walsh was instrumental in the 60-14 hammering having scored a try, provided three try assists and made a linebreak. Although it was a tackle in the 70th minute that had fans fuming. The Rabbitohs made a rare break down field after an intercept and Staggs chased down Bayleigh Bentley-Hape.
The Broncos were scrambling on the following play when Walsh got back into the line and delivered what looked like a shoulder charge on Tyrone Munro. "What is happening," Billy Slater said in Channel Nine commentary as the game continued.
And fans were left fuming at the incident. Amid the chaos and tired bodies, Walsh appeared to make little attempt to wrap his arms around Munro as he launched himself into the Rabbitohs back.
Fortunately for the Rabbitohs, Lachlan Hubner scored two plays later in a consolation try. But fans were left fuming Walsh escaped punishment, which followed Rabbitohs five-eighth Jack Wighton copping a four-game ban last week for a shoulder charge.
Fans could not believe the moment was let go without even a penalty. The Match Review Committee will have a chance to review the tackle - to see if there was anything in the tackle - and the game, before making a decision.
Reece Walsh gets away with an obvious shoulder charge. The guy is a protected species.#NRLBroncosSouths

The Buffalo Bills have a long injury list early on during their 2025 NFL training camp journey. Among that extensive group, we have a few updates as of late. The three updates on that trio can be found below: CB Maxwell Hairston (knee) Once feared a serious injury, the top rookie for the Bills is not going to miss extensive time. During Buffalo's "Return of Blue and Red" practice, he was spotted on crutches: OL Spencer Brown (back) Brown has finally started to practice. He was taken off the physically unable to perform list (PUP) by the Bills. The right tackle has had back issues in the past he was being safe with: OL Alec Anderson (knee) Anderson had his knee scoped and is considered "week-to-week." Team USA sets new relay record at swim worlds and Katie Ledecky wins again
The United States set the world record in the 4x100 mixed relay on Saturday, clocking 3 minutes, 18.48 seconds in the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. The old record was 3:18.83 set in 2023 by Australia. It was only the second world mark set in these championships. It came on a night when the United States won three gold medals, by far its best performance in what had been a lackluster championships for the team. Katie Ledecky won the 800 freestyle and Gretchen Walsh took the 50-meter butterfly. The Americans now have eight gold medals. The championships close on Sunday. Despite the relay gold, the story was Ledecky remaining unbeaten in the 800 freestyle. She first won that race in the 2012 Olympics and has never lost since in a major competition. After 700 meters, 18-year-old Summer McIntosh of Canada was slightly ahead but she faded and Ledecky won in 8:05.62, with Lani Pallister of Australia taking silver (8:05.98), with bronze for McIntosh (8:07.29). McIntosh has won three individual gold medals in Singapore and was trying for five. She will come up short, though she will be the favorite in Sunday's 400 individual medley. Ledecky said she was not aware she was trailing. She glanced down at a race results sheet to confirm it. "I didn't know," she said. "I just knew it was close the whole way. There were times where I thought I was just going to break away. I was just happy I was up there." "You just never know when you dive what everyone's tactics are going to be — or what's going to happen," she added. "It was fun to just be in that kind of a race. Just try to make small moves just here and there." Ledecky has won 23 gold medals at world championships and 30 overall. Add to that nine Olympic gold medals and 14 Olympic medals overall. If you're counting, that's 44 Olympic and world medals. Gretchen Walsh of the United States won the 50 butterfly in 24.83 seconds for her second individual gold of the worlds. She won the 100 fly. Alexandria Perkins of Australia claimed silver (23.51) with bronze for Roos Vanotterdijk of Belgium (25.43). "It feels great to be like myself again in the water after kind of a rocky week," said Walsh, referring to the " acute gastroenteritis " that the Americans have battled in Singapore following a training camp in Thailand. "Two-time world champion. Can't complain with that," Walsh added. Paris Olympic 50-fly gold medalist Cameron McEvoy of Australia repeated his title in the worlds, winning in a quick 21.14. Ben Proud of Britain was the silver medalist (21.26) and American Jack Alexy took bronze (21.46). Defending champion and world-record holder Kaylee McKeown of Australia won gold again, taking the 200-meter backstroke in 2:03.33. American Regan Smith took her fourth silver medal in Singapore (2:04.29) with bronze for American Claire Curzan (2:06.04). Maxime Grousset of France picked up his second gold, taking the 100 butterfly in 49.62, just off the world record of 49.45 by American Caeleb Dressel. Noe Ponti of Switzerland took silver (49.83) with bronze for Canadian Ilya Kharun (50.07). Grousset also won the 50 fly.

Broncos' projected wide receiver depth chart for 2025 and beyond
Courtland Sutton's secured. The Denver Broncos officially announced on Monday that Sutton has signed a four-year contract extension. The team has now secured quarterback Bo Nix's favorite target for 2025 early in training camp. Sutton is the team's obvious WR1, but how does the receiver depth chart look behind him? Entering his second season, Devaughn Vele is probably the favorite for WR2 duties, but third-round draft pick Pat Bryant will be competing to quickly win playing time this summer. Marvin Mims is a do-everything weapon for Denver's offense, and he's probably best suited to play in a slot/WR role. Troy Franklin is likely competing for snaps at the same position. Trent Sherfield was added to the mix this spring, but his biggest contributions will presumably come on special teams. The Broncos also have a pair of veterans in A.T. Perry (who is nursing an ankle injury) and Michael Bandy (who spent all of last season on the practice squad). At the bottom of the projected WR depth chart, Denver has four undrafted free agent additions. The year that each player is scheduled to become a free agent is listed in parentheses. For example, Sutton is signed through the 2029 season, so he's set to become a free agent in the spring of 2030. Broncos projected WR depth chart WR1: Courtland Sutton (2030) WR2: Devaughn Vele (2028) / Pat Bryant (2029) Slot: Marvin Mims (2027) / Troy Franklin (2028) ST: Trent Sherfield (2027) Veteran depth: A.T. Perry (2026) / Michael Bandy (2026) UDFAs: Joaquin Davis (2028), Kyrese Rowan (2028), Courtney Jackson (2028), Jerjuan Newton (2028) Not a bad group of receivers, especially when you account for tight end Evan Engram joining the offense. All five of the team's (projected) top receivers are signed through at least 2026, so Nix should be able to build great chemistry with the team's core group. Nix and his teammates are set to face the San Francisco 49ers in the Broncos' preseason opener on Aug. 9 (view the full preseason schedule). Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X!
