The Best Lagers Of 2025—According To The World Beer Cup
Lagers from across the globe were given gold medals in various categories at the 2025 World Beer Cup.
The resurgence of interest in lagers has been a bright spot in the craft beer industry in recent years. The industry as a whole has experienced some growing pains with people drinking less and more brewery closings, but in that time lagers have increased in popularity among both brewers and beer drinkers.
This could be seen at this year's World Beer Cup, the unofficial Olympics of beer held earlier this spring in Indianapolis. All told, more than 8,375 beers and ciders in more than 300 categories were submitted by producers from 49 countries. Lagers were among the most popular categories and more than 1000 different lagers were submitted to the competition from breweries across the U.S. and the globe. These beers were judged by more than 200 judges over 14 tasting sessions. The best lagers were assessed in a variety of categories and judges awarded only one gold medal per category.
Pilsners are technically a type of lager, but we've covered some of this year's best pilsner winners previously, so here we will be focusing on other types of lagers that took home gold at this year's World Beer Cup. These award-winning beers hail from multiple countries and range from dark to light lagers and draw on a diverse range of traditional and modern brewing techniques.

Brewers Send 5-Word Christian Yelich Message After Rockies Game
Brewers Send 5-Word Christian Yelich Message After Rockies Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Milwaukee Brewers designated hitter Christian Yelich is in his thirteenth major-league season after making his debut in 2013 at age 21. Advertisement Originally selected in the first round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Marlins, he spent five seasons in Miami before an offseason trade sent him to Milwaukee ahead of the 2018 campaign. In Milwaukee he immediately elevated his game—batting .326 with 36 homers and 110 RBIs on his way to NL MVP honors in 2018—and transitioned that success into his current nine-year, $215 million contract that includes a mutual option for 2029. Yelich has said repeatedly he wants to finish his career in Milwaukee and his contract is indicative of that. Brewers designated hitter Christian Yelich (22)© Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports During Friday's 10-6 win against the Colorado Rockies, Yelich extended his hitting streak to ten games, collecting 19 hits—including eight extra-base knocks—and 17 RBIs over that span as Milwaukee has surged to a 7–3 record over those contests. Advertisement The team's official X account congratulated Yelich and wrote, 'This guy is a MACHINE.' Since joining the Brew Crew, Yelich has been named an All-Star three times (2018, 2019, 2024) and claimed a Gold Glove in left field before his transition to designated hitter. Over his career, Yelich has a lifetime .286 batting average, accumulating 219 home runs and 805 RBIs in 1,543 games. He has led the Brewers to six postseason appearances out of his seven Milwaukee seasons, but is still searching for his first National League pennant, falling just a game short in 2018. As Milwaukee eyes another October run, Yelich's bat and clubhouse leadership will once again be pivotal to the team's success.
