Police seek people's support to eradicate ganja menace
In line with it, the police intend to include people's participation in tackling the major challenge faced in the erstwhile Visakhapatnam and neighbouring districts.
Youngsters are going to play a proactive role not only in creating awareness among masses but also passing the information about peddlers to the police.
For the past one year, the Visakhapatnam Range police reached out to 3,000 educational institutions and carried out 11,000 awareness programmes on the implications of ganja menace. Nabbing the peddlers, seizing their properties and encouraging tribals to eradicate ganja cultivation were some of the extensive programmes carried out by the police.
However, despite several measures taken for curbing cannabis abuse and transportation, the police mentioned that they were not getting desired results. 'Ganja eradication should go beyond surveillance of the police which includes controlling its transportation, cultivation and consumption. For the past one year, the police booked 694 cases and arrested 1,945 accused persons. In all, 40,063 kg of ganja was seized. However, despite the efforts taken through awareness drives and strict surveillance, results are not that effective,' opined Gopinath Jatti, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Visakhapatnam Range.
But the DIG expressed confidence that the eradication of ganja would be more effective when people come forward to tip off and join hands with the police to offer support. This includes passing on information to the police on cultivation of ganja, transportation and consumption. 'The police will also admit drug addicts to deaddiction centres and help them overcome their addiction. But when people volunteer to offer support, the campaign will become even more impactful,' the DIG underlined.
Using technology like drones, identifying hotspots and increasing surveillance, the police also intend to seek the support of NGOs to derive desired outcomes in ganja eradication.
Reaching out to ganja cultivators, the police are extensively focusing on recommending alternative crops, creating livelihood opportunities to the youth involved in cannabis cultivation and transportation along with making people understand the implications of ganja menace through awareness drives. With people's participation, the DIG informed that the agenda is to eradicate ganja completely in the region.

Vedan booked for rape after woman alleges breach of promise
Kochi: Police have registered a rape case against rapper Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, based on a complaint from a woman that he sexually abused her after promising to marry her. The alleged abuse took place a couple of years ago, police said. City police commissioner Putta Vimaladitya told the media that the investigation was in its initial stages and no notice had been served to the rapper yet. He said, according to the complainant, there had been some financial transactions between her and Vedan. "We need to verify all allegations. We also need to speak to those whose names have been mentioned in the complaint. We will take further steps after that," he said. The complainant approached the deputy commissioner of police (Kochi City) on Wednesday night, following which Thrikkakara police registered an FIR after recording her statement as one of the locations where the alleged abuse occurred falls under its jurisdiction. The woman is learned to have decided to file a complaint after coming across a similar experience allegedly shared by another woman. Vedan had earlier faced allegations under the MeToo movement. Meanwhile, the complainant's counsel, Vimala Binu, said her client had faced threats after proceeding with the case and a police complaint was filed in this regard. She has not raised concerns about his politics, ideology or songs. Her complaint pertains to a personal crisis she experienced and her privacy should be respected, Binu said, alleging that several people had forcibly entered the complainant's home and issued threats over the phone. The lawyer told the media that the complainant required police protection and she had approached the court in this regard. The media reports on Thursday had revealed private details. She is a survivor and the media should respect her privacy. Any details in the complaint that could compromise her privacy should not be reported, she said. The complaint explains the reason for the delay in approaching police. She was undergoing treatment due to mental stress and the evidence to back this has been handed over to police, Binu said. In April 2025, Hill Palace police arrested Vedan along with eight friends after allegedly recovering 6gm of ganja from an apartment near Vyttila. He was later arrested by the forest department after a leopard-tooth pendant was found in his possession, which he claimed was a gift from a fan. He was released on bail in both cases.

Dharmasthala mass grave case: SIT recovers bones at 6th burial site
Mangaluru (Karnataka): In a major development in connection with the mass grave allegation case, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has recovered bones during the excavation of the sixth burial site at a Hindu pilgrimage centre in Mangaluru district of Karnataka, sources confirmed on Thursday. This discovery is likely to mark a significant turning point in the investigation into the mass grave allegations in the Dharmasthala temple town. According to SIT sources, two bones were recovered from the sixth burial site located in a forested area. Following the recovery, the SIT has shifted its full focus to a careful and detailed excavation of the site, with the entire team redirected to assist with the process. In response to the discovery, SIT chief DGP P. Mohanty and DIG M.N. Anuchet are rushing to the site. The excavation is being carried out in the presence of the Tehsildar, forensic science experts, and SIT personnel. Authorities are proceeding cautiously with the digging process. The recovered bones will be documented and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for further examination and DNA analysis. Sources stated that the whistle blower has claimed that he had buried 8 bodies at the 6th burial site. However, no official statement has been released yet regarding the discovery. Meanwhile, DGP and IGP M.A. Saleem has issued an order deputing nine additional police personnel — including a head constable and several constables — to assist the SIT in the ongoing investigation. Earlier, the department had provided 20 police officers to the SIT. Digging at the marked burial sites continued for the third consecutive day on Thursday, despite rain. Of the 13 marked burial sites, excavation work is currently underway at sites numbered 6, 7, and 8. Civic workers are being deployed to carry out the digging, while Tehsildars, forensic science experts, and the complainant are also present at the site for monitoring. SIT chief Mohanty had earlier stated that nothing has been recovered from the burial sites excavated so far. However, reports have surfaced that sleuths recovered a red torn blouse and a PAN card belonging to a woman named Lakshmi from the first burial site. Additionally, the whistle blower and complainant in the case has reportedly submitted a skull — allegedly excavated from the burial site — to the SIT. In a major development, on July 11, the unidentified complainant in the case, who had claimed that he was forced to bury several bodies of women and girls who were raped and murdered in Dharmasthala village appeared before a court in Karnataka's Mangaluru district and recorded his statement. He requested that the police exhume the bodies in his presence. He further alleged that the bodies of the women showed clear signs of sexual assault. They were found without clothes or undergarments and bore injuries suggesting violent sexual acts. The revelations have shocked the state. A retired Supreme Court judge and activists demanded a SIT probe monitored by the Supreme Court or the High Court into the shocking Dharmasthala murders involving many women, girls and destitute men. The development has sparked a major controversy.

P'garh jailor suspended for misconduct, service lapses
Lucknow: Pratapgarh district jailor Ajay Kumar Singh was suspended on Monday after a departmental inquiry found him guilty of misconduct, including inappropriate behaviour towards subordinates, denial of emergency leave, and defiance of senior officials' instructions. The suspension was based on a probe by DIG prisons, Prayagraj range, Rajesh Srivastava. The inquiry, supported by staff testimonies and documentary evidence, concluded that Singh's conduct was indecent, undignified, and in violation of the UP govt Servants Conduct Rules. Officials said Singh routinely denied urgent leave requests from jail staff and refused to comply with legitimate directives from his seniors. His behaviour created a hostile work environment, affecting prison administration and staff morale. Following the inquiry, the jail administration and reform services department recommended departmental disciplinary action. Singh will remain under suspension pending the outcome of further proceedings.
