NSO to launch first-ever National Household Travel Survey in July: Mospi
The one-year survey, being conducted as part of the National Sample Surveys (NSS) 80th round, will collect information on day-to-day travel within the country and will provide a picture of the travel patterns and choices of people across all demographics.
'The survey is aimed at collecting information on how, where, and for what purpose people travel within India, which is critical for making informed decisions on infrastructure projects and public transportation systems,' the statement released by the Mospi on Thursday said.
Addressing the two-day training workshop on the NHTS, NSO Director General Geeta Rathore emphasised the crucial role of the surveys in evidence-based policy making and stressed the need for high-quality, timely data.
'The critical data collected in this survey will aid in policy development and infrastructure planning,' the statement by MoSPI said.
In addition, the NSO will also conduct the Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey (DTES), which aims to collect detailed data on expenditure made by households on domestic overnight trips.
Both surveys will cover the entire Indian Union, except for villages in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands which remain difficult to access throughout the year.

Indian Railways passengers data: Indian Railways (IR) remains one of the most preferred modes of transportation in the country. Over the past decade, the Ministry of Railways has undertaken several initiatives to enhance connectivity including – the launch of modern trains like Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat, doubling of railway lines, construction of new tracks, and the redevelopment of stations, among others. Earlier this week, Congress MP Imran Masood raised a question to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the number of passengers who have travelled by train since 2019. In response, Vaishnaw stated that train occupancy is not uniform throughout the year. He explained that passenger numbers fluctuate depending on lean and peak travel periods. 'On Indian Railways, the occupancy pattern of trains is not uniform throughout the year, and it varies over lean and peak periods. During peak rush periods, the occupancy of the trains, especially on popular routes, remains full whereas during lean periods and on less popular routes, there is sub optimal utilization,' Vaishnaw added. A total of 3349 crore passengers travelled in Indian Railways (IR) during last six years (i.e. 2019-20 to 2024-25) which included 418 crore reserved and 2,931 crore unreserved class passengers (2020-21 and 2021-22 were COVID years). Elaborating further, Vaishnaw said, 'To cater to the rush during Durga Pooja/Deepawali/Chhath, 7,990 trips of Special trains were operated during the period 1st October,2024 to 30th November, 2024, to serve approximately 1.8 crore passengers. With a view to facilitate the passengers during the recently concluded Maha Kumbh, IR operated more than 17,300 trains during the period 13th January, 2025 to 28th February, 2025, which served approximately 4.24 crore passengers.' In a move to improve operational efficiency and reduce last-minute disruptions, the Ministry of Railways has issued a fresh circular updating the guidelines for submitting emergency quota (EQ) requests, according to an ET Online to a circular issued by the Ministry of Railways on Tuesday, passengers requesting emergency quota (EQ) seats must now submit their applications a day prior to their travel date. This revised rule is applicable to all train services across the country, reports ET to a PIB release on April 10, 2018, 'In order to meet the urgent travel requirements of High Official Requisition (HOR) holders who are on the waiting list, a limited number of berths have been earmarked as Emergency Quota in different trains and in different classes.'At the time of allotment of berths or seats, emergency quota is first allotted for self travel of high ranking official holders or Members of Parliament, etc., strictly as per their inter-se seniority in warrant of requests from other departments are also considered, the remaining quota will be allocated based on various factors such as the purpose of travel, like government duty, family bereavement, medical emergencies, job interviews, and the status of the passenger."Emergency quota request for all the trains leaving between 0000 hours and 1400 hours should reach EQ cell up to 1200 hours on the previous day of journey," the circular said."Emergency quota request for all the remaining trains leaving between 14.01 hours and 23.59 hours should reach EQ cell up to 1600 hours on the previous day of journey," it that requests received on the same day as the train's departure will not be to the circular, requests for trains departing on Sundays or public holidays must be submitted the day before the scheduled departure.'The requests for the release of accommodation in trains, for which the emergency quota is to be released on Sundays or clubbed holidays after Sundays, should be given during office hours on the previous working day,' the circular railway board has proposed preparing the reservation chart eight hours before the departure. For trains departing before 1400 hours, the chart will be prepared the previous day at 2100 hrs July 1, 2025, authorised agents will be restricted from booking tickets during specific time slots to prioritise bookings for individual July 15, 2025, all Tatkal tickets booked at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and through authorised railway agents will require an extra layer of verification through OTP (One-Time Password) tickets purchased via IRCTC's official website and mobile app will only be accessible to individuals who have successfully authenticated Aadhaar from July 1, 2025.

After a four-year gap, Mumbai's beloved mini train, fondly known as "Van Rani" (Queen of the Jungle), is all set to return to the tracks of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), rekindling nostalgia for generations of Mumbaikars and nature enthusiasts. Sprawling across 106.95 sq km in the heart of Mumbai, SGNP is reviving this iconic Mini Toy Train, which was discontinued after Cyclone Tauktae caused severe damage in 2021. Originally launched in 1974, the train has been a cherished attraction for over 50 years, delighting children, families, and tourists alike. Now, under a major redevelopment initiative, the Van Rani is being brought back, refreshed, revitalised, and ready to roll. The effort is being led by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, with critical support from the Ministry of Railways. What's New with Van Rani? Track Overhaul The entire 2.3 km route has been relaid, and all 15 bridges along the track have been reconstructed, ensuring a safe and smooth ride for visitors. Modern Coaches A brand-new toy train unit has been added to the SGNP fleet. Trial runs began on June 30, and a successful full-capacity test was conducted on July 5, showcasing the readiness of the system. Upgraded Stations Krishnagiri Station has completed work on its building, platform, and accessibility ramps. Final touches are underway. Teenmurthy Station has a completed platform, and its station shed is expected to be ready by July 25. New Attractions The new Van Rani will offer more than just a ride. Passengers can enjoy educational panels on wildlife, panoramic views of the Deer Park, and an immersive journey through SGNP's rich biodiversity, adding a fresh dimension to the experience.
