Children who lost parents show remarkable resilience under kinship foster care: Officials
Kozhikode: The landslide that struck Mundakkai-Chooralmala in Wayanad on June 30 last year robbed several children of their parents and loved ones in a matter of moments, leaving them with deep scars. Seven children lost both their parents in the disaster and two of them have now turned 18. As the tragedy nears its first anniversary, district child protection officials said five children, who lost both parents, are now under kinship foster care in the houses of close relatives. They have adapted remarkably well to their new realities and are reportedly doing well. "All five aged between 5 and 16 are attending school and living with close relatives, mostly uncles or aunts. Since most of them are too young to fully grasp the depth of their loss, they've adapted well," said Karthika Anna Thomas, district child protection officer, Wayanad. Three of the five children are girls. One of the youngest, a five-year-old girl, spends time with her aunt's new born baby. The infant's laughter and presence have become a source of healing for her. Another girl, aged eight, lives with three cousins whose warmth and cheerful presence have slowly brought colour back to her life. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo As many as 11 children lost their fathers and three lost their mothers in the tragedy. According to officials, those who lost their fathers, including a 2-month-old baby, are with their mothers, and vice versa. Two of the 14 children are from Tamil Nadu. District child protection unit authorities said they continue to monitor the emotional, educational and recreational needs of the children. "Even so, outreach workers say that during birthdays, Vishu, Eid and other festivals, the children miss their parents' absence deeply," an official said. The entire cost of one student's degree education, of the two who reached adulthood, is being covered by the management of Don Bosco College in Sultan Bathery. The other, pursuing Plus One studies in Kozhikode district, had earlier dropped out of school but resumed studies after the tragedy. New houses are being built for many children under govt's rehabilitation township plan. Those not opting for houses in the township after being promised homes by organisations received Rs 15 lakh from state govt. Also, those who lost both parents were provided Rs 10 lakh, while those who lost one received Rs 5 lakh, deposited in fixed joint accounts in the names of the children and district child protection officer, with the children receiving interest from deposits. Also, 19 children receive Rs 4,000 monthly under Centre's sponsorship scheme. Additionally, private organisations and individuals, through state govt, contributed Rs 31.2 lakh to six children who lost both parents.

Female jumbos likely to miss Dasara festival due to pregnancy tests
Mysuru: Karnataka foresters are now in a fix as two experienced Dasara elephants, Lakshmi and Hiranya, are unlikely to be available for this edition of the Dasara. The reason is that they both tested positive in pregnancy tests. Officers, however, are cautious and are carrying out further tests for confirmation. These two elephants were among four female elephants that participated in previous Dasara celebrations, and the duo donned the role of Kumki elephants, which closely walk with the howdah elephant to keep him in a good mood during the high-stress job of the Dasara procession. Last year, both Lakshmi and Hiranya, from the Rampura elephant camp in Bandipur Tiger Reserve, walked alongside Abhimanyu, who carried the golden howdah in the Dasara procession. Another elephant, Varalakshmi, 68, will be counted out for the festival due to her advanced age. This will leave the forest officers involved in the selection of elephants for the festival in a lurch, as they have to look for inexperienced female elephants. Usually, about 14 elephants, including four to five female elephants, are shortlisted for the celebration. With uncertainty looming large, officials are looking for alternative female elephants, which are required to keep the tuskers calm during their stay at Mysuru Palace, during rehearsals leading up to the Dasara procession. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The Dasara festival this season starts on Sept 22 and culminates with the procession on Oct 2. M Malathi Priya, conservator of forests, Mysuru circle, who is in charge of the selection process of elephants, said the process is still underway and soon the list will be finalised. In response to a query, the officer said the department has adequate female elephants and there won't be any issues in their selection. "As per the procedure, we're proceeding to select the elephants," she noted. The first batch of elephants, five to seven elephants, would arrive in Mysuru city on Aug 4. After Lakshmi delivered a male calf during the Dasara rehearsal period at Mysuru Palace in 2022, the forest department is cautious about selecting female elephants. Since then, before selection, pregnancy, and other tests for female elephants have been made mandatory. An officer revealed that Lakshmi, 25, and Hiranya, 45, are likely to be counted out of the celebrations as initial tests are showing positive. Deputy conservator of forests (wildlife) IB Prabhugowda informed that they are awaiting test reports of female elephants. He, however, confirmed Varalakshmi will not be included in the list because of her age.

Maharashtra education dept explores dedicated CET centres for convenience of students
Pune: The department of higher and technical education may set up dedicated exam centres to conduct the state Common Entrance Test (CET) for professional, technical, medical, and agricultural courses. It has also decided not to conduct exams in centres outside the state from next year. The CET cell conducts 19 different exams for courses at centres across the state. The MHT-CET exams receive the highest registrations and are conducted at approximately 180 centres statewide. Since the CET cell does not have its own centres, it rents facilities from coaching classes and computer training centres. Consequently, the CET cell is assessing the number of students at each centre within the state. The move is also to prepare for the possibility of conducting the CET twice a year. An official from the department said that they are currently assessing student numbers at each centre. "Often, students from one district do not get their first-choice centre and are instead assigned to a distant one in another district. The department is studying such cases to determine how many centres are needed in each district and what technical requirements should be included," a senior official from the department said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Vastu Compliant 3BHK @ Kalyani LivingTree, KIADB, Bagalur Kalyani Developers Learn More Undo The state govt has also been considering the possibility of holding major CETs, for admissions to engineering, pharmacy, and agricultural courses, at least twice a year. With the computer-based test spanning multiple days and large volume of students taking CETs, the higher and technical education department will need to study the feasibility of conducting the exercise more than once every year. The idea is to give students an opportunity to improve their scores. A govt representative said that there is too much reliance on a single-day test which can be unfair for various reasons. A student could be unwell, under pressure, or face an unexpected issue that day.
