Original ‘Naked Gun' creator rips reboot and star Liam Neeson: ‘It's not a fresh idea'
Can he be Frank? David Zucker, the director and co-writer of the 1988 spoof comedy 'The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!,' has a lot of gripes with the new reboot — from the casting of Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin, Jr., to its similarities with his beloved original. But, the filmmaker admitted, he hasn't even watched the update, which hits theaters this weekend. 'I don't plan on seeing it because, why would I?,' Zucker, 77, told the Daily Mail. 5 'Naked Gun' creator David Zucker says he has no plans to see the new movie. WireImage Zucker, his brother Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams were comedy powerhouses in the 1980s and '90s — a team known as ZAZ — creating 'Airplane!,' 'The Naked Gun' (as well as the ABC TV show that spawned it, 'Police Squad') and 'Top Secret!' But Paramount chose not to involve him in the latest chapter — the first in 31 years — which is directed and co-written by Akiva Schaffer of 'Saturday Night Live' and the Lonely Island. Seth MacFarlane, the creator and voice star of 'Family Guy,' acts as producer. 'I wrote a whole script for 'Naked Gun 4' on spec for Paramount,' David said. 'I understand the studio's thinking to go with Seth MacFarlane. He's a proven commodity and Liam Neeson is a big star, but it's not a fresh idea.' The 'Naked Gun' relaunch, which also features Pamela Anderson, is very much in the mold of the old trilogy — with modern nods to spy movies such as 'Mission: Impossible.' The first three films starred Leslie Nielsen as woeful LA cop Frank Drebin. Irish Neeson plays his son, who's just as reckless and blustering. 5 Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson star in the 'Naked Gun' reboot. AP 5 Zucker doesn't think Neeson was the right fit for the role of Frank Drebin. AP However, David doesn't think the acclaimed Neeson is a logical fit for the franchise he birthed. 'OJ [Simpson]… he didn't need to be funny,' he said. 'And even Leslie Nielsen doesn't need to be funny. He just had to be a B-movie actor. That's what we did… We didn't pretend to cast Laurence Olivier or even Al Pacino. But Liam Neeson, for example, he's like Oscar quality. I think he may have won for 'Schindler's List.' So I mean, what's he making fun of?' MacFarlane reached out to him, but the gesture was too little, too late. 'I had a conversation with Seth and he spent 10 minutes just telling me how he idolized 'Naked Gun,' 'Airplane,' 'Top Secret,'' he said. 5 Leslie Nielsen starred in three 'Naked Gun' films. 5 David Zucker cast Nielsen because he was a B-movie actor. 'How can you be mad at anybody who tells you how great you are? But it's not enough to be a fan…The guy at my dry cleaners is a big fan, but it doesn't mean he can do 'Naked Gun.'' Critics, so far, are more on board with the reboot. The Post awarded the comedy four stars, calling it 'the funniest movie to hit theaters in a long time.' The flick currently holds a 90% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 87% rating from audiences. 'I hope people go to see it, as miffed as I am at the whole thing,' David said. 'Seth thought he knew best and it may actually do well, which is crazy in itself.'

Steve Buscemi Recalls Failed Audition for Barry Levinson's ‘Tin Men': 'There Was This Silence'
Steve Buscemi is known for many of his recognizable roles, but he was not able to secure a part in Barry Levinson's 1987 comedy Tin Men, the actor recalled on Wednesday's Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The host asked Buscemi if there were any roles he auditioned for that stung when he didn't secure them. More from The Hollywood Reporter Anthony Mackie Jokes He's the "White Dude Legend" After Multiple Co-Stars Earned Emmy and Oscar Nominations Paramount Faces a Talent Rebellion, and Their Target Is Trump's D**k Colbert Teases Trump After Name Reportedly Listed in Epstein Files: "Mystery Man Known Only as Micropenis DJT" 'I was always hot and cold. I never knew, like, if I should wing it 'cause sometimes I'd be good if I went in the room and I didn't really prepare,' he said about his experience with auditions. 'And then the next time I'd do it, I would fail.' Buscemi then recalled his audition process for Levinson and said he knew he couldn't wing it. 'I studied the sides, the script and went in there and did my reading, did my audition and he looked at me and he went, 'That was really good, that's really good, Steve. All right, let's do it again,'' he said. 'He gave me a very specific note and I don't remember what that was.' The Wednesday actor explained that Levinson wanted him 'to add a different color to it or shading.' He continued, 'I went, 'OK.' And then I read it again, the exact same way I just did it.' 'There was this silence and we both just looked at each other,' Buscemi continued as the audience laughed. 'I think I even said, 'That was the same, wasn't it?' And he said, 'Yeah, it's OK, it's OK.' Needless to say, I did not get that part.' Another audition he recalled was with director Mike Nichols and casting director Juliet Taylor. Buscemi explained that he didn't want to audition because he already booked another job that had a conflict with the shooting schedule. However, his agent at the time encouraged him to go to the audition so he could meet Nichols and Taylor. 'I went in, I do the audition and they love it,' he said. 'They were laughing, they were like, 'That's great! Yeah, good.'' Following the positive responses from Nichols and Taylor, Buscemi asked when they were filming the project. He then told them that he wasn't available, and he was met with a memorable response. 'And again, this, like, silence,' he said. 'And I could see Juliet Taylor just looking at me going, 'What is wrong with you?'' Despite not securing some of the roles he auditioned for, Buscemi has been able to make a name for himself in both comedies and dramas. Some of his most notable movie roles include parts in Reservoir Dogs, Fargo and The Big Lebowski, while he also starred on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
