England Rebounds at Euro 2025, Set for Sweden Clash
Wiegman's team bounced back to beat the Netherlands 4-0 in a must-win match and then thrashed tournament debutants Wales 6-1 on Sunday -- and now ride a confident wave of togetherness into their quarter-final match against Sweden.
'We didn't have a good start against France, but that gave us also the urgency to fix, to do things better as a team on the pitch, getting the connections better,' Wiegman said. 'With that loss, the urgency came.
'The team really responded well on that, and now hopefully we can show that again against Sweden. We built momentum also from the France game, because that really brought us together.'
Sweden, who lost to England in the semi-finals at Euro 2022, were barely challenged in this year's group stage, winning all three of their games by a combined score of 8-1.
England finished second in their group, which means, provided they get past Sweden in the quarters, they will avoid world champions Spain in the semi-finals.
Wiegman played down the idea that England may have benefited by not winning the group.
'I think that in tournaments, that's really tricky to think, 'Oh, we want to go that way, because, then we might have this and this',' Wiegman said. 'If you start thinking like that, that's very tricky. You're trying to just win every game, and then see where you finish in the group, and then you play who's in front of you.
'If you want to be successful in the tournament, you should be able to win every single game. So that's how we approach it.'
The celebratory England crowd at Arena St. Gallen on Sunday periodically broke into a song about Wiegman, who has won 14 of the 15 European Championship games she has coached.
Singing to the famous 1958 tune by The Champs, every time the song loudly exclaims 'Tequila!' the supporters yelled 'Sarina!'
'It's really nice,' Wiegman said, looking slightly red-faced at the question. 'Doesn't make me feel really comfortable. But yeah, they were creative, I clapped a little bit for them. I hope they can sing a lot still over the next weeks.'

"If it was not clear before, it is undeniable now – women's football is unstoppable and here to stay," Nadine Kessler, UEFA's head of women's football, said in a statement. "This is more than a tournament; its' a movement, and the response from across Europe and beyond proves that women's football is not only here to stay – it is setting the new standard." Even before the tournament kicked off, Euro 2025 had sold more than 600,000 tickets to surpass the 574,875 sold in 2022 in England. Some 60,000 fans took part in fan walks to the stadiums, including 14,000 Swiss and Icelandic supporters who walked three kilometres to that game at the Stadion Wankdorf in Bern. The tournament has also been a success on digital platforms, with 8.4 million engagements across its social media platforms, a 55% increase over the same period in 2022. Spain and England scored 14 goals apiece in the group stage, matching the mark set by the English in 2022. Wales' Jess Fishlock became the oldest women's Euro goalscorer at the age of 38 years and 176 days. The quarter-finals begin in Geneva on Wednesday when Norway play Italy. Olympics-Flag football to make primetime Olympic debut at LA28
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Flag football will take center stage during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, after organizers confirmed the sport's medal matches will be held in primetime slots in its first-ever Olympic appearance. The International Federation of American Football (IFAF), in partnership with the National Football League (NFL), announced on Monday that the men's and women's medal games are scheduled for Friday evening, July 21, and Saturday afternoon, July 22, at BMO Stadium near downtown Los Angeles. The announcement comes as senior IFAF and NFL delegations visit Los Angeles for the first official meetings with Games organizers, marking exactly three years to the day before the LA28 Opening Ceremony. "Flag football will definitely be a hot ticket at the Games," IFAF President Pierre Trochet told Reuters on Monday. "We're going to be at a great stadium right in the heart of the city and we're going to have fantastic players on the field with NFL players available." Flag football is a non-contact variation of American football in which players wear flags attached to their waists. Instead of tackling, defensive players must remove a flag from the ball carrier to end a play. The sport is played on a smaller field with fewer players per side. The inclusion of flag football in LA28 follows a vote by NFL owners allowing NFL players to participate in the Olympic competition. Cricket-Starc record as Australia bowl out Windies for 27 to win third test
(Reuters) -Mitchell Starc delivered the fastest five-wicket haul in test history on Monday as Australia crushed the West Indies by 176 runs in the third test in Kingston, Jamaica to complete a 3-0 series sweep. Starc took 15 balls to wreck the West Indies top order in a brilliant display that left the home side's run chase in tatters, before returning to take his sixth wicket after Scott Boland's hat-trick. West Indies were bowled out for 27, the second-lowest total in test history after New Zealand's 26 against England in 1955. Starc shattered the previous record for a five-for by four balls, surpassing Ernie Toshack (1947), Stuart Broad (2015) and Boland (2021), who needed 19 deliveries to achieve the feat. The drama began on the first delivery of West Indies' second innings, when Starc enticed John Campbell to nick an outswinger to wicketkeeper Josh Inglis. Debutant Kevlon Anderson shouldered arms to a ball that jagged back and struck his pad four balls later, before Brandon King edged on to his stumps as the hosts found themselves three wickets down with no runs on the board.
