Facilitating growth of GCC is a priority for govt

The Hindu23-04-2025
Facilitating growth of global capability centres in the country is a priority for the government as the GCCs create jobs and consequently provide a boost to the economy as well as facilitate innovation, Secretary to the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology S. Krishnan said here on Wednesday.
The senior official, who was speaking at the Nasscom GCC Summit, said this citing the plans of the government to spread the growth of such facilities to tier II and III cities. He also underscored how the GCCs ought to generate more higher quality jobs.
'The more higher order jobs, engineering and engineering R&D and product development coming into India is something the country welcomes,' he said.
In the Union Budget for 2025-26, the government mooted a national framework for GCC as guidance to States for promoting such facilities in tier 2 cities. He said expanding to tier II and III cities would benefit the companies by way of significant cost reduction and talent retention.
Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were a few States that have also launched their own programmes to push for GCCs in tier II and III cities, he said, adding the framework of the Centre is to encourage more States promote growth of such facilities in locations beyond the major cities.
On the sidelines, to a query from media on the India AI Mission, Mr. Krishnan said the response to call for proposals to develop indigenous foundational AI models, including Large Language Models, has been positive. It has been extremely good with 67 proposals received in the first round and 120 in the next.
He said the government is keen on promoting innovation through AI. Regulation of the emerging technology is not the priority.

All panchayats will have high-speed fibre network within 3 years: Telecom Secretary

New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): Telecom Secretary Neeraj Mittal on Monday said that all Indian villages will have a high-speed fibre network within the next three years. The central government had launched an ambitious BharatNet programme to connect the villages. The primary objective is to provide unrestricted access to broadband connectivity to all telecom service providers. 'Government of India is spending Rs 140,000 to connect every gram panchayat with 1 gigabit per second connectivity. As we speak, roughly 50,000 panchayats have 1 gigabit per second connectivity with an SLA of more than 98 per cent,' the secretary said, speaking at the CII Global Capability Centers (GCCs) Summit. 'There's a long way to go, and we hope that within 3 years we will have all the village panchayats, which is roughly about 2.5 lakhs, plus the villages associated with it, which is roughly about 6 lakh, will get connected to a high-speed fibre network,' the secretary said. Speaking about GCC infrastructure in India, the telecom secretary said enablers of GCC are very well established in India, referring to the talent pool. 'Be it connectivity, the capability to innovate, the rule of law, or strong IPR protections. All these things make India a very attractive destination,' the secretary continued. Connecting telecom with GCCs, he said internet data costs in India is very low in India against the global average. Data costs are a key component of GCCs. 'We are about 9 cents per GB... USD 2.6 is the global average,' the secretary said. 'India saw one of the largest and fastest 5G expansions. We covered over 99 per cent of the districts. Only there are only two districts in the country where there is no 5G,' he added. Further, the secretary put special emphasise on security aspects, noting that India is amongst the top nations where the cybersecurity infrastructure, policies, response mechanisms, mitigations are top class. Going by definition, GCCs are offshore facilities set up by multinational corporations to manage a variety of business functions and processes for their parent organisations. (ANI)

GCCs critical enabler of India's $1 trillion services export vision, says senior Deloitte official Romal Shetty

New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): India holds the potential to unlock an economic contribution of USD 470-600 billion by 2030 through GCCs (Global Capability Centres) and it would be a critical enabler of India's USD 1 trillion services export vision, Romal Shetty, CEO, Deloitte South Asia, said on Monday. Speaking at the CII GCC Business Summit, Shetty said India currently hosts approximately 1,800 GCCs. 'With the right policy environment, ecosystem support, and coordinated action, there is a realistic aspiration to scale this to 3,400-5,000 centres over the next few years,' he said. He said 67 per cent of Fortune 500 and 77 per cent of Forbes Global 2000 companies are yet to setup GCCs. Mid-market companies (USD 100M-USD1B in revenue) contributed to 35 per cent of new GCC setups over the last two years, Shetty asserted. 'This growth could enable the sector to support 20-25 million jobs by 2030--up to 5 million direct, and the remainder through indirect and induced impact across real estate, supply chains,' he said. 'It also holds the potential to unlock an economic contribution of USD 470-600 billion by 2030, factoring in direct output as well as ecosystem-level effects. This would position GCCs as a critical enabler of India's USD 1 trillion services export vision.' GCCs are also evolving into innovation hubs, he said, adding over 70 per cent of GCCs now focus on digital product development--not just service delivery--necessitating proximity to innovation ecosystems. Referring to Indian startups as key co-creation partners, he said 1.8 lakh+ startups and 100+ unicorns strengthen the provision of a vibrant innovation pipeline for GCCs to source frontier solutions. Unlock tier-2 cities to boost growth of GCCs: MeitY joint secretary Secy KK Singh

About 95% of global capability centres ( GCCs ) in India are concentrated at six locations and the challenge is to broaden this base for greater inclusiveness, said KK Singh, joint secretary in ministry of electronics and information technology ( MeitY ), on Monday. At the GCC Summit in the national capital, Singh said identifying best practices from existing GCC hubs can provide direction for emerging locations to attract GCCs. The summit was organised by industry body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). "We have seen that GCCs are hardly opting for these tier-II cities," he said. "Our approach will be to take the best practices in the six (top) locations, and based on that, create guidelines for the other states to follow." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bộ kit 10000W: Giải pháp xanh cho gia đình LocalPlan Tìm Ngay Undo Speaking at the same event, Ajay Vij, senior country managing director for Accenture India, said the company has expanded to seven or eight emerging cities in the last three years.
