Petition launched after Ethan Ives-Griffiths trial
Michael Ives and Kerry Ives, both of Kingsley Road, Garden City, were found guilty of murdering their two-year-old grandson at Mold Crown Court earlier this month. They were also found guilty of cruelty to a child, as was their daughter and Ethan's mother, Shannon Ives. Shannon Ives was also convicted of causing or allowing Ethan's death. During proceedings, the court heard harrowing details of the neglect and abuse Ethan suffered. Following the completion of the court case, Ethan's paternal family have set up a petition calling for an update in child protection services. The petition can be found here 'Ethan's Law' suggests that if social workers are denied entry to homes, they have the ability to escalate proceedings to the police. It also calls for checks to be carried out every five to seven days as opposed to the current 10-days. The petition states: "After four years of relentless pursuit, we finally received a verdict in the tragic case of our beautiful Ethan, a bright and innocent two-year-old boy. "He fell victim to the gross negligence and abhorrent abuse at the hands of his own maternal grandparents who were supposed to cherish him. Tragically, Ethan's mother stood by, neglecting her duty to protect her precious son during the most vulnerable time of his life, instead joined in with the neglect. Ethan Ives-Griffiths. (Image: North Wales Police) "When Ethan was discovered, he was severely malnourished, bruised and had a serious head injury, which resulted in Ethan being pronounced brain dead, testament to the horrifying neglect he suffered. Although justice has been served, and Ethan's soul can find peace, the profound loss we feel is indelible. "This painful experience underscores the urgent need for reform in the way child protection services operate, (Ethan's Law), particularly related to home visits for children on the protection register. "The safety and well-being of vulnerable children must be prioritised with more stringent measures. Currently, social services are able to conduct home visits without a warrant, in Ethan's case they were refused to go in and could not enter the home, resulting in missing critical signs of harm. "We propose a change in legislation to ensure that social services are following the correct protocol and if they are refused entry then they are to escalate it to the police. If this is not reported to the police for a further welfare check then the social workers must be held accountable for not following through with protocol for a child that is registered on the child protection list. This would empower social workers to take decisive action in safeguarding children. "Moreover, we urge for increased frequency of these checks. Instead of the existing 10-day interval, we recommend reducing this period to every 5- 7 days. "For children that are not on the child protection register, to have checks every 4-6 weeks, by health care professionals such as, health visitors or GPs. By doing so, we can substantially mitigate the risks of abuse, neglect, and tragedy that families like ours have faced. Consistently monitoring the living conditions and treatment of children will allow for timely interventions and potentially save lives. "Let us come together to push for these crucial reforms in child protection services. By signing this petition, you join us in advocating for the safety and security of all children like Ethan, ensuring that no child suffers in silence. "Your support can make a real difference in preventing future tragedies and strengthening our social service systems to better protect our most vulnerable." Flintshire County Council did not wish to comment on the petition, when approached.
