Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz placed on leave by MLB
Ortiz, 26, had been slated to start against the host Chicago Cubs on Thursday.
"The Guardians have been notified that Luis Ortiz has been placed on leave per an agreement with the Players Association due to an ongoing league investigation," the team said in a statement. "The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time and will respect the league's confidential investigative process."
Ortiz is 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA in 16 starts this season. The native of the Dominican Republic was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates as part a three-team trade that included the Toronto Blue Jays on Dec. 10.
Ortiz owns a 16-22 record with a 4.05 ERA in 75 career games (50 starts) with the Pirates (2022-24) and Guardians.
Left-hander Joey Cantillo (1-0, 3.81 ERA) will get the nod in place of Ortiz and make his first start of the season on Thursday. Cantillo, 25, has yet to face the Cubs in his career.

WASHINGTON — Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood became the third player to announce he will take part in the Home Run Derby. The derby will be held on July 14, the night before the All-Star Game, at Truist Park in Atlanta. Wood joins Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who leads the majors with 33 homers, in the contest. Wood has 22 homers this season. But according to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Lillard and Milwaukee's relationship hit a rough patch in the wake of his recovery from a torn Achilles. 'I was informed that Aaron Goodwin, Damian Lillard's agent, about a month ago, reached out to the Bucks and informed them that Dame would like to rehab back home in Portland — stay with his kids, rehab back in Portland,' Haynes said Wednesday on NBA TV. Damian Lillard was lost for the postseason after suffering a torn Achilles in April 2025. AP 'I was told that some people within the Bucks did not approve of that, and so there was kind of some back and forth right there. … I think that might have gotten the ball rolling or at least put some ideas in the heads of the Milwaukee Bucks that kind of led to this decision.' Lillard suffered a torn left Achilles in the Bucks' first-round exit from the playoffs in April. With the former Trail Blazer expected to miss most, or all, of next season as he recovers from the injury, the Bucks opted to waive the nine-time All-Star, stretching his contract over the next five seasons to make their new four-year, $107 million pact with Myles Turner work. Although the move raised eyebrows, Lillard is said to be happy with it. 'It's an incredible opportunity for Damian,' Goodwin, Lillard's agent, told the Oregonian. 'He receives all of his money guaranteed, and it provides him an opportunity to decide his next destination as an unrestricted free agent. 2025 MLB Home Run Derby Jerseys Honor Braves Greats Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth
MLB All-Star Week is inching closer, and the league has revealed this year's jerseys for the 2025 Home Run Derby — which will be held at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves, the night before the All-Star Game on July 14. The jerseys will pay tribute to two of the best Braves players in history — Babe Ruth (for the Boston Braves) and Hank Aaron, who famously broke Ruth's home run record. As the designated home team, the National League threads are a lighter shade of blue, while the American League jerseys are a darker blue, per ESPN. The jock tag includes "ATL 2025" with the three main colors featured, and "AL" or "NL" appears on the left chest of the uniform, which includes red trim down the jersey and on the sleeve. National League players will wear No. 44, while players representing the American League will wear No. 3. These will be the uniforms for everything except the actual All-Star Game, where players will wear their primary home or road threads. The 2025 All-Star Game will be held the following day, on July 15. Those dates numerically (7/14 and 7/15) allude to Ruth's career home run total (714), which stood for decades as the MLB record before Aaron surpassed him with his historic 715th.
