KUCHING (June 20): More than 18,000 visitors and 50,000 online viewers are expected at the Sarawak Career and Training (SCaT) Fair 2025, to be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on July 5 to 6.
The state's largest annual education and career fair has attracted over 50 exhibitors, including companies, public and private higher education institutions, financial aid providers, technical schools, and government departments and agencies, said Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
The Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister said this year's SCaT Fair, with strong support from Social Security Organisation (Socso) in managing industry participation, will feature walk-in interview sessions for job seekers.
'A total of 1,561 job vacancies across various sectors, including construction, manufacturing and more, will be offered,' he told a press conference at BCCK here today.
Sagah said Socso will also organise a Career Exploration Session aimed at empowering future job seekers, especially students, to develop clear career pathways and understand the evolving demands of the job market.
He said SCaT Fair will serve as a one-stop centre for students, youth, parents and the community at large, to provide comprehensive information on education and career opportunities, as well as details on educational financial aid available from participating agencies.
He added that the fair also aims to enhance the employability and marketability of graduates and youth, as well as empower them to make informed decisions about their futures and nurture interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among schoolchildren.
'New to this year's fair is the Oil & Gas Zone, managed by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), which will highlight the participation of Petronas, ENEOS Xplora, PTTEP, Mubadala, Brooke Dockyard, Petra Energy and many more,' he emphasised.
In addition to employment opportunities, Sagah said the fair will also feature a series of exciting concurrent side programmes, namely the Sarawak Initiative Information Wall, Sarawak Mega Quizzes Challenges, STEM Playground, Skills Master Competition, Sarawak Blockchain & Crypto Day 2025, Sarawak Rocketeer CAN-SAT Challenge, Planetarium Sultan Iskandar (PSI) Dome, Kid's Fun Zone, Youth Icon Speaker Corner and SCaT Kamboh Stage.
He encouraged all Sarawakians to participate in the various events and exhibitions at the upcoming SCaT Fair 2025.
'For visitors seeking employment or planning to further their studies, I urge you to take full advantage of the consultations offered by esteemed institutions and participating companies at this fair. Seize this opportunity to learn and apply what you gain,' he said.
The 11th edition of SCaT Fair is jointly organised by the ministry, the Workforce Development Unit of the Premier's Department, Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (Tegas), Socso and Petros. It will be launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Since its inception, the SCaT Fair has become a highly anticipated event.
Last year, it was successfully held at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) in Kuching and, for the first time, at the Indoor Stadium in Sibu ― attracting a total of 29,068 visitors, with 20,240 in Kuching and 8,828 in Sibu.

He said social inclusion is a core component of Sarawak's Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to ensure economic benefits reach all levels of society, particularly the B40 group and rural communities. 'The 'Petronas Memacu Kehidupan Gawai 2025' programme today aligns with the objectives of PCDS 2030. 'Organised in partnership between Petronas and the Welfare Department (JKM) Serian Division, the programme reached out to 150 recipients through the distribution of essential food baskets in the Serian district. 'These contributions not only alleviated the burden during the festive season but also brought joy to families celebrating Gawai Dayak,' he said when officiating the programme at Kampung Tarat Melawi here today. Each food basket contained cooking oil, glutinous rice, canned goods, condiments, and locally-produced coffee. Petronas Sarawak general manager Norazibah Md Rabu handed over the festive contributions to Serian Division Social Welfare officer Robert Jullong Bengat during the programme. In her speech, Norazibah said the initiative reaffirms Yayasan Petronas' commitment to uplifting marginalised communities. She said the programme was part of Petronas' Community Well-being and Development initiative, aimed at spreading festive joy. 'We believe that everyone deserves happiness, especially when celebrating meaningful occasions such as Gawai,' she said. A total of 750 families across Sarawak have been selected to receive the contributions this Gawai, including 400 households in Miri and Bintulu, she noted. 'It is our hope that these contributions not only lessen the burden of those in need but also kindle the festive spirit of Gawai – filled with gratitude, love and joy,' she said. Perkeso benefits aid hawker after accident disrupts income
S. Vijayaletchime, 40, (centre) receiving the mock cheque from Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim (in red cap) as others look on at her flat in Machang Bubok, Penang. BUKIT MERTAJAM: Bringing in around RM100 or more a day selling Indian economy rice, S. Vijayaletchime's life took a turn when she met with an accident and had to sit out a few months of work. As the sole breadwinner in the family, with her husband helping her man the stall, the accident posed a significant challenge. "In August last year (2024), my husband and I were heading home on his motorcycle after buying a new blender needed for the stall when a car struck us. "We were hit by a car near a petrol station. "My husband was unharmed but I had injuries to my knee and hip, requiring three months of bed rest. "This derailed our income as I need to cook and was told not to do strenuous activities," she said when met at her flat during the handing over ceremony of the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) benefits under its Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) in Machang Bubok on Thursday (July 10). The 40-year-old received RM13,354.29 in benefits in lieu of three months' medical leave. The mother of two said while her daughter is married, her son is only 17 years old and in school, which means there were monthly expenses they needed to meet. "I can make around RM7.50 per plate that I sell and on a good day can even take home RM150, so it was difficult for us. "My son-in-law and family members helped out with our finances but it was still difficult as we had to take money from others and it was not enough. "I am glad to be better and managed to resume work in December last year (2024)," she said. She found out that Perkeso covered such incidents through a friend and was grateful that it was an easy process to make the application. 'I did not sign up for Perkeso, but all registered hawkers (under the Seberang Perai City Council) here in Bukit Mertajam have been signed up for it by our MP Steven Sim for free. "I was unaware of the perks until someone told me I could claim for my loss of income. "The money came in handy and helped me settle some debts and manage my finances," she said. Sim, the Bukit Mertajam MP, who handed over the mock cheque to Vijayaletchime, said he had covered the annual contribution for some 3,000 traders last year. "This is the second year I am doing this. "We renewed 1,976 contributions this month, while 205 others opted to pay the RM70 on their own," he said. Sim, who is also the Human Resources minister, urged more self-employed individuals, part-timers, and hawkers to sign up, calling it an important safety net when the unexpected happens. "I urge everyone who is self-employed to contribute as it keeps you protected if anything untoward were to happen. "I want to remind people who are contributing that you are entitled to claim as well as many are unaware of the perks," he said.

Socso helps 4,105 ex-convicts find work since 2020
NIBONG TEBAL: A total of 4,105 former prisoners have successfully reintegrated into society through the Social Security Organisation's (Socso) career-matching program from 2020 to July 2024. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim highlighted that the initiative supports national efforts to reduce reliance on foreign labour by tapping into local talent, including rehabilitated individuals. The manufacturing, construction, agriculture, food services, and wholesale and retail trade sectors have absorbed the highest number of these job seekers. Sim noted that Malaysia's workforce comprises 16.78 million people, with foreign workers making up 13.7 per cent of the total. 'This underscores the need to utilise local potential inclusively, including former inmates,' he said during the MYFutureJobs Career and Entrepreneurship Carnival at the Seberang Perai Prison Complex. The event, a collaboration between Socso and the Prisons Department, featured 20 employers offering 1,080 vacancies. Nine public and private agencies also provided entrepreneurship programs. Since 2020, Socso's Daya Kerjaya program has placed 2,604 individuals in jobs, with RM12 million disbursed in employer incentives. Sim emphasised the government's commitment through the Active Labour Market Stimulus Policy, which offers RM600 monthly for three months to employers hiring ex-convicts. Socso also signed an MoU with six industry associations to expand job opportunities for rehabilitated individuals. Present at the event were Prisons Commissioner-General Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Razak, Socso Chairman Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal, and CEO Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed. – Bernama
