ED raids in Delhi-NCR, Punjab in ₹988 crore bank loan 'fraud' case

The Hindu25-06-2025
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) conducted searches at multiple premises in Delhi-NCR and Punjab as part of a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged ₹988 crore bank loan fraud case, official sources said.
The action is being undertaken against the promoters of a company, Shilpi Cables Technologies Ltd. (SCTL), and some linked entities. Nine premises in Delhi-NCR and one in Jalandhar were part of the searches being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said.
The money laundering case stems from a CBI FIR alleging cheating a consortium of banks led by the IDBI Bank to the tune of ₹988 crore by the promoters of SCTL and their associates, they said.
The ED suspects that a large portion of the money (loan) availed from the banks using LsC (Letters of Credit) were transferred abroad through 'fake' transactions. The role of the company managing director (MD) Manish Goel is under the scanner of the agency, as per the sources.

VVIP chopper case: Delhi HC reserves order on MGF chief Shravan Gupta's plea against non-bailable warrants

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday reserved its order on a plea filed by Shravan Gupta , chairman of Delhi-based real estate developer MGF Group and a co-accused in the Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper case, seeking quashing of non-bailable warrants (NBW) issued against him for not joining a money laundering investigation being carried out by the ED in the said case. Gupta's counsel informed the Delhi High Court that his client, who is currently in the UK, will not be able to join the investigation physically owing to his ill health. He said that Gupta can, however, join the ED investigation via video conferencing. After Anti-Corruption Bureau, Enforcement Directorate likely to probe Telangana irrigation engineers

Hyderabad: Enforcement Directorate (ED) is likely to open a money laundering investigation against engineers linked to major irrigation projects, once it secures the requisite first information reports (FIRs) from Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). Agency sources said that it would investigate the alleged diversion of govt funds into private companies and the use of these proceeds for destination weddings abroad. Among those under scrutiny are engineers N Sridhar, Muralidhar Rao and Hariram Naik. According to sources, ED aims to determine whether state funds were funnelled into these entities. An unexplained transaction of funds for a Thai wedding, allegedly linked to an engineer's kin, has escalated the probe for potential FEMA irregularities. ED has formally requested detailed records from ACB concerning the cases against Sridhar, Muralidhar Rao and Hariram Naik. Documents sought include FIRs, chargesheets, and statements, which ED might use to support PMLA proceedings. High-value cash deposits, recent overseas travel, and unexplained asset purchases were expected to form a key part of the probe. The planned ED investigation follows high-profile action by ACB, which recently arrested Muralidhar Rao in a Rs 50 crore disproportionate assets case and uncovered luxury assets, villas, and companies.

‘Raut aide' gets HC bail in Covid centre scam

Mumbai: Bombay high court on Wednesday granted bail to Sujit Patkar (47), an alleged aide of Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, in a 2022 FIR against him for an alleged Rs 32-crore loss to the public exchequer through a jumbo Covid centre scam and a money laundering case. ED arrested Patkar in July 2023. Granting him bail on parity, Justice Amit R Borkar said while his complicity is indicated, the question was whether his prolonged custody since 2023 warrants the ends of justice since the probe is over but the trial is unlikely to begin soon. HC also considered questions raised by senior counsel Aabad Ponda for Patkar and ED counsel Hiten Venegaonkar. Patkar was accused of cheating the civic body after getting a contract to run a Covid centre in Worli through under-deployment of doctors and staff as well as by generating fake bills. He was one of four partners, including co-accused Dr Hemant Gupta of Lifeline Hospital Management Services. Dr Gupta was never arrested or taken into custody, Ponda argued. It said in the absence of distinct material against one accused, discriminatory incarceration of a co-accused with identical factual allegations would be legally unsustainable.
