George Springer's big bat helps Blue Jays upend Yankees
July 1 - George Springer hit a grand slam, added a solo homer and had a career-best seven RBIs Tuesday afternoon as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting New York Yankees 12-5 on Canada Day. Andres Gimenez added a three-run homer for the Blue Jays, who have won the opening two of a four-game series. Toronto moved within one game of the first-place Yankees in the American League East. Jasson Dominguez had three RBIs for New York. The Yankees scored two in the first against Kevin Gausman. Paul Goldschmidt singled, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton walked, and Dominguez grounded a two-run single up the middle. Max Fried didn't allow a hit over the first three innings before Springer led off the fourth with a homer to left center on a 2-2 curveball. The inning continued when Davis Schneider was given an infield hit on a chopper to third and Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s throw was wide of first. Myles Straw walked and Gimenez homered to center on a fastball down the middle. Nick Sandlin took over in the sixth from Gausman, who allowed two runs, six hits and four walks with three strikeouts in five innings. Fried retired his final seven batters and allowed four runs, three hits and two walks while striking out two in six innings. The Yankees scored twice in the seventh. Cody Bellinger led off with a single and Judge was intentionally walked by Justin Bruihl. Chisholm's grounder forced Judge at second. Braydon Fisher (2-0) took over and consecutive errors by third baseman Ernie Clement and first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on grounders each resulted in a run to tie the game at 4. Mark Leiter Jr. (4-6) entered in the Toronto seventh, allowing Gimenez's one-out single and walking Tyler Heineman. Luke Weaver replaced him and pinch hitter Addison Barger reached first on catcher's interference to load the bases. Clement lined an RBI single off shortstop Anthony Volpe's glove. Springer followed with his ninth career grand slam on a blast to left center. Geoff Hartlieb walked in a run and allowed Springer's two-run single in the home eighth. Toronto's Yariel Rodriguez allowed a run in the ninth. Toronto recalled Leo Jimenez and optioned Jonatan Clase to Triple-A Buffalo. Jimenez started at shortstop on Tuesday and was 0-for-2. --Field Level Media

Reports: Tim Hardaway Jr. reaches deal with Nuggets
July 1 - The Denver Nuggets reached an agreement on a one-year deal with Tim Hardaway Jr. on Tuesday, according to multiple media reports. Per The Athletic, the deal is for the veteran minimum. Hardaway, 33, was acquired last summer by the Detroit Pistons along with three draft picks from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Quentin Grimes. The shooting guard went on to become a key contributor in Detroit's resurgence in 2024-25 that resulted in the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, where the Pistons lost to the New York Knicks in the first round. Starting and appearing in 77 regular-season games for the Pistons, Hardaway averaged 11.0 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists while shooting 36.8 percent from 3-point range. Denver has enjoyed an impressive haul in the early going of free agency, adding Jonas Valanciunas and Cameron Johnson via trade and inking returnee Bruce Brown Jr. in the period's first few days. --Field Level Media

Is this a rival for Emma Raducanu's heart? Amid Carlos Alcaraz rumours, an old pal shows up to support star as Jack Draper joins her in second round
Her face lights up with a radiant smile, telling the world that all is well with Emma Raducanu as she continues her Wimbledon campaign. And it is not just her friends – and fans across the nation – who will be willing her on as she steps out on Centre Court. Spotted in the background of the selfie was a familiar face – dashing former tennis prodigy Benjamin Heynold. His beaming appearance has added to supporters' good-humoured speculation about which lucky man may have won over the 22-year-old's heart. Rumours have also swirled around her friendship with defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz – with the pair due to play mixed doubles together at the US Open next month. After securing a second-round showdown with 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova yesterday, Ms Raducanu was happy to pose for pictures – with Mr Heynold in the background. There was talk of possible romance after Mr Heynold, 24, was seen regularly in her team's corner at Queen's in west London last month. The student, who is at the University of North Carolina in the US, was pictured cheering her on alongside her coach Nick Cavaday and agent Thomas Houchin as she reached the quarter-finals. The pair have been friends since they first met at six, and they have represented Team GB together. She also appears to be close to Alcaraz. Their doubles pairing has sparked speculation that their partnership may be growing closer off the court. Yesterday, the Spaniard, 22, said she will be his 'boss' when the stars team up at the Open in New York. Asked about how he thought they would gel, Alcaraz said: 'I'm just going to serve. I'm going to pull myself away and let her play. She will cover all the court. She will be the boss... I will do whatever she wants me to do. That's it.' Ms Raducanu has laughed off suggestions of a romance with Alcaraz in the lead-up to Wimbledon, insisting they were just good friends. Adding to the rumour mill, Australian maverick Nick Kyrgios suggested mischievously that the two-time defending men's champion could be in competition with fellow British star Jack Draper for Ms Raducanu's attention. 'I don't know, I think it's a love triangle,' Kyrgios said on talkSport. 'Draper, Alcaraz, Raducanu. They're fighting over Raducanu I think.' 'The tennis world loves a love story, they love to try and put two together.' He added: 'Obviously, winning a Grand Slam at 19 is never easy, it comes with a lot of expectation on the outside world. But, you know, as long as she's happy, there's so much pressure that comes with being the No 1 player and playing at Wimbledon, so hopefully she can find her feet. Imagine her and Jack Draper winning the women's and men's title. That would be something.' A host of celebrities braved the heat to watch the second day's action. Happy Valley actress Sarah Lancashire was joined in the Royal Box by Australian film stars including Cate Blanchett, Rebel Wilson and Russell Crowe, who was with his partner Britney Theriot. British No 1 Draper, who stands at 6ft 4in, towered over his 5ft 7in opponent Sebastian Baez yesterday, and won his opening match after the Argentinian was forced to retire after slipping on the grass. He tried to battle it out before giving in at 6-2, 6-2, 2-1 to the home favourite. Dan Evans defeated fellow Briton Jay Clarke to win his opening match. Draper and Evans will join seven Britons who won their first matches on Monday – the most home wins on any day of the Championships in the open era.
