5 projects that are happening this Mandela Day
As the country marks Mandela Day on 18 July 2025, government departments, organisations and civic bodies have lined up impactful community-centred initiatives in tribute to former president Nelson Mandela's vision of dignity, justice and service.
From healthcare interventions to gender justice campaigns, here are just five of countless inspiring activities taking place this year.
1. Santaco cleans ranks and tackles GBV in Ekurhuleni
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) will mark Mandela Day with a dual-focus initiative at Esquereni Taxi Rank in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni.
The programme includes a rank cleaning activity and a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Awareness Drive in partnership with the Commission for Gender Equality.
'Former President Mandela taught us that true freedom is lived when we serve others with dignity,' said Santaco President Motlhabane Abnar Tsebe.
'This campaign reflects our commitment to clean, safe ranks and a taxi industry where no commuter is offended, harassed or harmed.'
The event, which runs from 9am to 1pm, also aligns with Santaco's broader #SantacoCares and Hlokomela Road Safety and Customer Service campaigns.

2. Gauteng health launches surgical marathons
In a life-saving tribute to Mandela, Gauteng Health has launched surgical marathons at hospitals across the province to reduce surgical backlogs and restore dignity to patients in need.
According to the provincial department, these marathons are underway at facilities like Helen Joseph Hospital Breast Clinic, Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and Dr. SK Matseke Hospital
'This initiative draws from the best global practices and ensure equitable access to surgical care and institutionalise time-based clinical accountability.
'It will mean that going forward, patients will be given clear timeframes by when their operations will be performed,' the department said.
3. Gauteng legislature leads community outreach
The Gauteng Provincial Legislature will lead a Mandela Day activation in Westbury by donating essential goods and offering services to vulnerable households and shelters.
Activities include food distribution, health screening, and child protection awareness in disadvantaged areas.
The programme will highlight a key infrastructure project: the construction of change-room facilities (abolition blocks) at the Westbury Open Grounds

4. Premier Kagiso Mokgosi on the Ground in North West
North West Premier Kagiso Mokgosi will take part in Mandela Day activities in Moretele Local Municipality.
It will take place at Mazista village in Swartruggens at 8am
The programme involves handing over renovated homes, delivering school uniforms, and launching a community garden.
Mokgosi said the activities demonstrate government's commitment to 'meaningful change' at grassroots level.
5. Social Development brings services to the Eastern Cape
Minister of Social Development Sisisi Tolashe, joined by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and the National Development Agency, will visit Mlungisi Township in the Chris Hani District to bring services directly to residents.

The event starts at 8am at the Mzingisi Skweyiya Community Hall in Ward 17.
From healthcare and housing to transport and social relief, this year's Mandela Day shows that South Africans are honouring Madiba's legacy not just with words, but with deeds that uplift communities.

Support food and sanitary drive
The Humanity Foundation is heading back to one of its most-loved venues, PnP Towers, and this time, the call is louder than ever: support women and NPOs in need. In preparation for Women's Month, the foundation will host a Food and Sanitary Drive on July 26 at 09:00, aimed at collecting essentials for women in need, particularly those affected by gender-based violence. According to founder Pierre Marneweck, the drive is more than just a charitable act- it's about restoring dignity and showing solidarity with the organisations on the front lines. 'We need your support, so that we can support our NPOs, especially those who take care of women and provide safety for GBV survivors,' he said. The drive calls for donations of non-perishable food, sanitary products, toiletries, and personal care essentials. Every donation counts. Attendees can expect a day of open hearts, community spirit, and meaningful giving. A warm, welcoming atmosphere will make it a day to remember- all in the spirit of unity and compassion. 'Let's unite on a day of fun, entertainment and open hearts, caring for those in our community.' For more information, contact Pierre on 082 610 7593. Medicross Carlswald invests in children's smiles
Community and compassion are at the heart of what Medicross Carlswald does, as enshrined in the company's values. Every year, this dedication manifests through acts of service and giving back, especially on Mandela Day. Read more: All smiles at Yenzani Childrens Home As a result, this July 18 served as a reminder of the impact that this modern centre, providing access to private medical, dental, and complementary healthcare services, can have, when they give back, 'even in small ways'. In collaboration with Sun Pharma Pharmaceuticals, the remarkable and compassionate dentists at Medicross Carlswald provided free dental treatments and check-ups to about 11 disadvantaged children from Yenzani Children's Home. The children were also provided with new school bags, pencil cases, water bottles, winter flasks, sanitary towels, toothbrushes, and toothpaste, among other items. These essentials will not only prepare them for the upcoming school term; they reinforce the message that they are valued members of the community. Over the years, the clinic has had the opportunity to be of service to the children of the home for their healthcare and dental needs. Khanya Sono, the clinic manager, said the clinic is always inspired to participate in Mandela Day, because they believe in Madiba's legacy of service, equality, and dignity for all, especially the most vulnerable members of society: Children. 'This day is essential for children, because it highlights their importance in our communities, providing an opportunity to meet some of their most basic needs, such as access to healthcare. 'Oral health is often overlooked, but it plays a critical role in a child's development. Untreated dental issues can lead to pain, infections, and poor nutrition, and even affect concentration and performance in school, as well as negatively impact a child's confidence and self-esteem.' The event was a great success. Beyond providing free dental screenings and care, the clinic created a fun and safe space for the children to feel seen, cared for, and valued. 'By investing in [children's] smiles, we're investing in their futures,' Sono added. Read Midrand Reporter for more. Join PBG in spreading warmth to cancer patients and pensioners
POLOKWANE – As Mandela Month continues, the PBG Help Group is calling on the community to open their hearts and help bring comfort to cancer patients and pensioners through a special winter initiative. This non-profit organisation, known for its tireless work in supporting vulnerable groups, is collecting completed crocheted items including beanies, blankets, and soft toys, that will be donated to cancer patients at Cansa units and elderly residents in need. These hand-crafted items are intended to offer more than just warmth – they also provide emotional support during some of the toughest moments in a patient's journey. Petro du Preez from PBG explained that the initiative is about spreading love and hope to those often forgotten. 'This Mandela Day, we want to give something that comes from the heart. You don't need to be able to crochet to get involved. We're also collecting donations of colouring books, crayons, water bottles, toiletries, snacks, and toys – small items that can make a big difference in someone's day.' These items will be distributed to both children and adults undergoing cancer treatment at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with sorting and distribution on Mandela Day. The deadline for donations is Thursday, July 17, and the drop-off location is at 23B Bodenstein Street, Luwalt Building, Polokwane. Those who wish to contribute or have questions can contact Petro du Preez directly at 078 453 1433. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
