Ukraine Says It Shot Down Russian Fighter Jet from Sea Drone for First Time
Its statement on social media said the fighter had been shot down by a military intelligence unit called Group 13 on Friday over waters near Novorossiisk, a major Russian port city on the Black Sea.
Outmanned and outgunned by its larger, wealthier Russian adversary, Ukraine has turned to drone warfare in the air and at sea as a way to fight back throughout more than three years of full-scale war.
Ukraine's seaborne drones, which are much cheaper and smaller than conventional ships, have wrought havoc on Russia's Black Sea fleet.
Ukraine has previously said it shot down a Russian military helicopter in December 2024 using a missile fired from the same type of seaborne drone.
The Russian Defense Ministry did not comment on the Ukrainian claim, but an authoritative Russian blogger believed to be close to the ministry said the jet had been shot down.
"Yesterday towards evening, a Su-30 naval aviation fighter jet was shot down by the Ukrainian side 50 kilometers west of Novorossiisk. This was done from an uncrewed boat with an R-73 SAM (surface-to-air missile)," the blogger, who goes by the name Rybar, wrote on the Telegram messaging app.
"The pilots ejected and were picked up by civilian sailors. Both are alive, and to hell with the plane."
The mayor of Novorossiisk declared a state of emergency on Saturday after local authorities said a Ukrainian drone attack had damaged a grain terminal and several residential buildings, injuring five people.

Meanwhile, the Russian Navy possesses a fleet of 64 nuclear submarines, including 16 SSBNs, 14 SSNs, 11 SSGN, and 23 Diesel-electric attack submarines (SSKs), according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative arms control group. Russia's Deadline The latest rhetoric escalation between Medvedev and Trump began after the latter set a deadline for Russia to agree on a ceasefire in Ukraine. On July 29, Trump said Moscow had '10 days from today' to end the war, cutting his previous 50-day deadline. On this matter, the US President said that his Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, was traveling to Russia to push for a ceasefire that brings the war in Ukraine to an end, threatening new economic sanctions against Moscow and it oil buyers in case no progress was made. The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, for his part, showed no sign of changing his stance on the war. On Friday, he that said Moscow hoped for more peace talks with Ukraine but that the momentum of the war was in its favor, reported Reuters. 'As for any disappointments on the part of anyone, all disappointments arise from inflated expectations. This is a well-known general rule,' he said, without explicitly referring to Trump. 'But in order to approach the issue peacefully, it is necessary to conduct detailed conversations. And not in public, but this must be done calmly, in the quiet of the negotiation process,' Putin noted. Trump-Medvedev War of Words Medvedev was Russia's president from 2008 to 2012 and is the current deputy chairman of Russia's National Security Council. Armenia, US to hold joint military drills On August 12-20, Interfax reports
Armenia and the United States will hold joint military exercises in Armenia on August 12-20, Russia's Interfax news agency cited the Armenian Defense Ministry as saying on Saturday. The Eagle Partner 2025 exercises will focus on peacekeeping tasks and medical evacuation procedures, the ministry was quoted as saying. Armenia is a treaty ally of Russia and traditionally a close partner, although bilateral relations have become strained in recent years as Yerevan grows closer to the West.
