Apple Manufacturing Academy opens in Detroit amid Trump pressure on US production

Apple currently produces very few products in the US. — Reuters Apple is trying to bring machine learning to Motor City. The smartphone giant opened its Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit on Tuesday to offer free workshops on artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing to small and medium-sized businesses. Apple stands out as one of the companies most dependent on manufacturing as well as consumers in China. The new academy is a part of Apple's broader US$500-bil (RM2.13 trillion) US investment commitment announced in February. The academy, which will be administered through a partnership with Michigan State University, will provide training on machine learning, automation and digital manufacturing technologies, with Apple experts helping to lead the workshops. "We're thrilled to help even more businesses implement smart manufacturing so they can unlock amazing opportunities for their companies and our country," Sabih Khan, Apple's chief operating officer, said in a news release. The company also will provide consulting services to businesses, available virtually and in person. Apple plans to add online courses this year that will teach skills such as project management and how to optimise manufacturing processes. The announcement comes as Apple faces pressure from President Trump and his supporters to bring more manufacturing jobs to the United States. Trump has called for Apple to move iPhone production stateside and is implementing tariffs that probably will raise the company's costs. On Tuesday, Trump threatened to impose tariffs as high as 25% on Indian imports if the countries cannot complete a trade agreement by Aug 1. The US also has a 30% baseline tariff on Chinese imports that expires August 12, with Trump saying duties could rise again without a new deal. In May, Trump expressed frustration with Tim Cook after the Apple chief executive stated that the company was expanding Indian production to avoid tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump said he reminded Cook of Apple's US$500-billion US investment promise and told him: "I don't want you building in India." Apple aims to produce about a quarter of the world's iPhones in India over the next several years as the company works to reduce its heavy reliance on Chinese manufacturing. After building its supply chain in China for decades, Apple has been expanding to other markets including Vietnam and India. Cook has managed his relationship with Trump since the president's first term, building rapport through direct phone calls and meetings. His approach proved effective in 2019 when he lobbied Trump personally to exempt iPhones from China tariffs, arguing that the duties would raise prices and benefit competitors such as Samsung. The Trump administration later excluded iPhones and other electronics from the tariff plan. The Detroit facility builds on Apple's presence in the city, where it already operates an Apple Developer Academy in partnership with Michigan State University that trains about 200 students annually in software development. Apple currently produces very few products in the US. The Cupertino, California, company makes the Mac Pro in Austin, Texas, and has announced plans to build AI servers in Houston as well as purchase chips from a Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co factory in Arizona. Experts note that moving iPhone production to the US would be prohibitively expensive. – Los Angeles Times/Tribune News Service

Malaysian manufacturers optimistic as sector nears stabilisation, demand improves

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Malaysia's manufacturing sector moved closer to stabilisation in July as business conditions showed the softest deterioration in five months, according to the latest S&P Global PMI data. The seasonally adjusted Malaysia Manufacturing PMI rose from 49.3 in June to 49.7 in July, signalling improving momentum despite remaining below the neutral 50.0 threshold. New orders declined at the smallest rate in five months, driven partly by the first increase in export sales since November 2024. Manufacturing production volumes softened at the mildest pace since February, reflecting the improved demand conditions. "Malaysian manufacturers saw pressure on operating conditions soften at the start of the second half of 2025, as the latest PMI data signalled that the sector moved towards stabilisation,' said Usamah Bhatti, economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence. Companies increased input purchases for the first time in exactly three years, marking the strongest expansion since April 2022. Employment levels remained broadly stable during the month, while firms worked to reduce their backlogs of existing orders. Business confidence regarding the year-ahead outlook strengthened to its highest level since February, with firms expressing hopes for broad-based economic recovery. Input cost inflation accelerated for the third consecutive month, reaching its highest level since November 2024 due to higher raw material prices and currency weakness. Manufacturers modestly raised their selling prices in response to increased material costs and exchange rate fluctuations. Supplier delivery times lengthened marginally amid reports of shipping delays, though the impact remained limited. The PMI data suggests Malaysia's third quarter began on solid footing, with indicators pointing toward continued GDP growth.

Aid rises, but economic strain persists

GEORGE TOWN: Although cash aid programmes like Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) are welcomed relief efforts, there are calls for the government to address the root cause of financial hardship in the lower-income group. Housewife Azimah Aziz, 41, said the initiatives are timely, but stressed the need to reduce the impact of rising prices of essential goods. 'While the cash handouts help ease the pressure temporarily, they do not solve the economic challenges that low- and middle-income families face every day. 'Without stronger price controls and a progressive wage system, many Malaysians may remain trapped in a cycle of dependency,' she said. During the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the annual STR and monthly Sara cash aid initiatives would be expanded. The Sara programme will benefit 5.4 million recipients, up from 700,000 previously. It includes a one-off RM100 cash aid for all Malaysians aged 18 and above. Additional cost-saving measures include subsidised public transport and domestic airfares for students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities, as well as electricity bill reductions under Tenaga Nasional Bhd's Time-of-Use scheme. Professional photographer Allen Lim, 52, praised the government's support for needy families from the Chinese and Indian communities. 'It is a noble act to address this issue, as the cost of living affects all communities in the country,' he said. However, he noted that rather than injecting funds into new villages, the government should consider positioning it as a hub for tourism and the creative economy, backed by sustainable and forward-looking policies. Anwar said infrastructure and public amenities would be improved to enhance social connectivity and quality of life among the Chinese and Indian communities, including women, youths and senior citizens. The Chinese community will benefit from the implementation of the New Village Development Master Plan, which includes financing schemes for entrepreneurial activities and the upgrading of hawker stall sites. On the Indian community, Anwar said focus would be placed on increasing career opportunities through education and talent development, especially in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training. Civil servant M. Loga, 26, welcomed the RM40bil allocated to the healthcare sector. 'It is a timely move, especially given the rising cost of medical treatment. The allocation will strengthen and improve our public healthcare system,' he said. Loga said many long-overdue projects, including the upgrading of dilapidated clinics, modernisation of medical equipment and improved healthcare access in rural areas, could be expedited. He hoped that a portion of the funds would be directed towards reducing patient waiting times and increasing the number of employees at public hospitals.
