Arkansas' Gage Wood Throws 3rd No-Hitter in CWS history and a record 19 Ks
He bounced back and finished off the third no-hitter in CWS history and first in 65 years on Monday, striking out a record 19 and never letting the Racers come close to getting a hit in the Razorbacks' 3-0 victory.
While trying to close out the game in the ninth inning, Wood hit another Murray State batter, but it was reviewed and overturned for a "lean in", resulting in Wood's 17th strikeout of the afternoon.
Despite achieving a feat only two other pitchers have completed, when Wood was asked about his emotions following the game, he responded:
"I shouldn't have hit the guy… That's all I got to say."
Wood joined Jim Ehrler of Texas in 1950 and Jim Wixson of Oklahoma State in 1960 as the only pitchers to throw CWS no-hitters, and his defense was never really challenged as he dominated a Racers team that was making its first Omaha appearance.
The junior right-hander set the CWS record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game. His bid for a perfect game ended in the eighth when his 2-2 breaking ball hit Dom Decker in his back foot. Wood, who got a foul out and consecutive strikeouts to end the inning, looked skyward and gave a primal scream and did a couple of high steps as he headed to the dugout.
With the victory, the three-seeded Razorbacks kept their CWS hopes alive and will play the loser of Louisiana State vs. UCLA on Tuesday.

Jake Mangum's second career home run in the MLB didn't even need to leave the ballpark. The former Mississippi State baseball star hit an inside-the-park home run on July 2 for the Tampa Bay Rays. He hit the ball to deep center field, and it caromed off the glove of Athletics center fielder Denzel Clarke. Clarke fell to the ground and Mangum sped around the bases. North Carolina hires AD-in-waiting, Bubba Cunningham to take advisory role in '26
North Carolina announced a transition plan Tuesday that will allow athletic director Bubba Cunningham to work with his replacement-in-waiting through the end of the upcoming academic year before moving into an advisory role created for him. Hired in 2011, Cunningham will work directly with his replacement starting in August. RFK Racing president Steve Newmark was named executive associate athletic director effective Aug. 15. Newmark will succeed Cunningham as athletic director in the summer of 2026. Cunningham signed a contract extension through 2029. His new title will be senior advisor to the chancellor and athletic director, which a university news release said will "allow Cunningham to focus his vast expertise on transformational University projects that will position the University and Carolina Athletics successfully for the future." "As part of my last contract extension, I committed to working with University leadership on a succession plan that would positively position Carolina athletics and our 28 teams for the future," Cunningham said in the school-issued release. "I appreciate the opportunity to extend my contract and enhance my role in a way that will allow me to continue to support our outstanding student-athletes, coaches and staff as we transition and navigate the changing athletics landscape. I am excited for the future." Since Cunningham took over as AD in 2011, the Tar Heels have won 24 national championships, participated in 11 college football bowl games, three College World Series and three men's Final Four runs. Newmark, who is from Chapel Hill, was on the advisory committee that selected head coach Bill Belichick to lead the football program. "Like many passionate Tar Heel fans, avidly following UNC athletics has represented a special and unique bond with my family and friends since childhood, and I recognize the role it serves for the University, alumni, community and broader fanbase," Newmark said. As the Boston Red Sox have struggled post-Rafael Devers deal, trade talks revolving around some of their best players have begun to heat up. Chief among them is outfielder Jarren Duran, arguably the team's top hitter on its 26-man roster. Advertisement ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan, specifically, believe Duran is one of the most valuable pieces on the trade market. Despite them placing Duran's likelihood of being dealt at 25%, only third baseman (and fellow Red Sox teammate) Alex Bregman is rated higher when factoring productivity and club control. Should Duran be dealt, the Red Sox would still have many options in their outfield, including Wilyer Abreu, Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Rob Refsnyder. Masataka Yoshida could also factor into the Red Sox's outfield rotation once he fully recovers from injury. That still may not stop the Red Sox from using the 2025 MLB Draft as a means to replenish their supply of outfielders. CBS Sports' Mike Axias predicts the club will use their first-round pick (No. 16 overall) to select Texas A&M outfielder Jace LaViolette. That season, he was named a First-Team All-American by Baseball America, D1Baseball, and the NCBWA, in addition to landing a spot on both the All-SEC First Team and All-SEC Defensive Team. LaViolette picked up numerous accolades outside of that year, too, as he landed on the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2023 and the All-SEC Second Team in 2025. He was also invited to attend USA Baseball's College National Team Training Camp in 2024. Advertisement McDaniel considers Laviolette to be the No. 12 prospect in this year's draft.
