Wales have 100 days to turn into world beaters

BBC News14-05-2025
The countdown to what promises to be the biggest ever Women's Rugby World Cup is on, with the tournament kicking off in England in 100 days' time. More than 300,000 tickets have already been sold for games across eight host venues, with this year's showpiece expanded to 16 teams.England go in as hot favourites but defending champions New Zealand have a habit of rising to the occasion having won six of the 10 World Cups. But what hopes are there for Wales, who were quarter-finalists three years ago? They will certainly need to up their game having finished bottom of the Women's Six Nations for the past two years.
Familiar foes
Wales have been drawn in Pool B and while they avoided England and New Zealand, they have landed the second best team in the world in Canada.Despite being amateur and having to fundraise just to come to the tournament, the Canadians are a force and will be many people's outside bet this summer. It is almost 20 years since Wales last tasted victory over Canada, with their most recent meeting coming at WXV1 in 2023. Scotland, a side Wales know very well, are also in Pool B. They are fierce Six Nations rivals, of course, and were also Wales' opening opponents in the 2021 World Cup.While Wales edged that contest courtesy of Keira Bevan's dramatic 79th-minute penalty, Scotland have beaten Wales in recent outings, most recently a in a nail-biting encounter in Edinburgh. Fiji are the group minnows, but they will be extra motivated to beat Wales as they are now managed by former Wales head coach Ioan Cunningham. The top two teams in each pool advance to the knockout stages.
Brutal pre-season incoming
After a disappointing first Six Nations campaign under new head coach Sean Lynn, Wales' players will report back for duty in the first week of June.Lynn has already said Wales lack the fitness to play his style of rugby and players will no doubt be put through their paces. He also said there will be a change in personnel, with some of Wales' pathway players - who play for the nation's under-18 and under-23 sides - being brought into camp to fight for selection. As we saw with Ffion Lewis, Lynn is not sentimental about senior players and some may not have their professional contracts renewed this summer. Wales will head down under for their final World Cup preparations, with a two-Test tour of Australia. They travel to Brisbane to take on the Wallaroos on Friday, 26 July before moving on to Sydney a week later, on what will be the eve of the second British and Irish Lions Test in the same city. Wales will then have a couple of weeks to shake off any jet lag before heading up to Manchester before their World Cup opener against Scotland at Salford Community Stadium on Saturday 23, August.
Progress needed after huge step back
Any hopes of an instant transformation in Wales' fortunes under Lynn were quickly quashed as his side suffered five losses in a Six Nations for the first time in their history. It was a huge step backwards, especially as Wales were as high as sixth in the world rankings a couple of years ago. This year there were left wanting in so many areas.Despite being full-time professionals, players simply did not look fit enough as they struggled to produce an 80-minute performance across the tournament.Wales also lack of strength in depth. The fact is that Lynn is not blessed with the sort of player pool he had at Gloucester-Hartpury.Change is inevitably going to come this summer, but whether 100 days is enough time to transform Wales from a Wooden Spoon side to world beaters remains to be seen.

Luke Littler selling signed sketches of himself online for eye-watering sum

DARTS sensation Luke Littler is selling sketches of himself for £1,295. There are four framed drawings of the teen arrows ace to choose from — each signed with his nickname, The Nuke. One shows him after his world championship win and another holding the Grand Slam trophy. They are the highest priced items on 18-year-old Littler's online shop. The pictures come with a certificate of authenticity from The Fan Cave — a site which lists the same items for less than half the price at £595. As well as images, clothing, darts and mugs, Littler's merchandise shop is also selling rubber-backed 'The Nuke' feeding mats for pets at £15. The listing states: 'Whether your furry friend is a messy eater or you want to add colour to their space, this mat is the perfect solution.' Luke recently left fans divided with a new look for the World Matchplay Darts. The teenager had ditched his iconic shirt that he had worn since last year. Luke kept his traditional purple and yellow but with a new design. The new shirt featured yellow paint strokes on the sleeves with a main purple body. However, the nuclear logos had been removed from the body, as had the yellow panelling under the sleeve. Luke Littler reveals gruelling new training regime that saw him almost break darts record 2

Coldplay couple who were caught on infamous kiss cam are hilariously mocked by darts fans in Blackpool at World Matchplay tournament

The now-infamous couple who went viral after being caught cuddling at a Coldplay concert have been hilariously mocked by darts fans at the World Matchplay in Blackpool. Andrew Byron, the head of the AI startup Astronomer, was broadcast on the big screen at Boston's Gillette Stadium with his arm around the company's HR chief Kristin Cabot during the band's gig on Tuesday night. They rapidly covered their faces, with Byron diving out of view and Cabot turning her back to the camera. But despite their efforts to avoid the limelight, their apparent awkwardness caught the attention of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. 'Oh look at these two!' the singer said mischievously as they spun around. 'Oh what? Either they're having an affair, or they're just very shy.' Public records suggest both Byron, 50, and Cabot, 56, are married - but that they live at different addresses to each of their spouses registered abodes. Caught out at the darts! 🙈 — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) July 21, 2025 The couple were seen covering their faces, with Mr Byron, the head of the AI startup Astronomer, diving out of view and Ms Cabot turning away from the camera Now, two fans at the World Matchplay on Monday morning made the most of their 10 seconds of fame as they mocked the couple on Sky Sports' broadcast of the event. During Gerwyn Price's first round match against Daryl Gurney at Winter Gardens, two people in the crowd were caught by cameras holding up a sign that read: 'We love Coldplay.' Price was dominating the game at the time, leading 6-3, when the camera cut to the two people in the crowd. They were stood one in front of the other, both looking at the big screens to see when they were on television. When they realised they were, they dived out of shot, with the person at the back dipping low and the one at the front throwing their sign to the floor and covering their face. It triggered loud laughs from the crowd, coming just days after Byron and Cabot themselves were caught. The clip instantly went viral, racking up millions of views on TikTok, as fans flew into a frenzy at the uncomfortable moment. Memes abounded, with many thanking Coldplay for 'bringing the whole internet together for one day.' Byron, 50, meanwhile, stepped down from his role after being placed on leave on Friday. The billion-dollar company announced the CEO's resignation in a statement on Saturday. 'As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding,' it read. 'Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met,' the statement said. 'Andy Byron has tendered his resignation, and the Board of Directors has accepted.' Back at the oche, meanwhile, Price beat Gurney 10-7 in a heated affair that saw the players clash multiple times on stage.

Sydney player Riak Andrew faces AFL suspension over homophobic slur

Sydney defender Riak Andrew is facing a lengthy suspension after being cited for using a homophobic slur while representing the AFL club's reserves team. First-year player Andrew, the younger brother of Gold Coast star Mac Andrew, used the slur during the Swans' VFL clash with North Melbourne on Saturday. The AFL Integrity Unit is investigating the matter. In a statement, Sydney said a remorseful Andrew understands the language he used is unacceptable and takes full responsibility for his actions. Swans chief executive Tom Harley said the club are extremely disappointed in the 20-year-old's actions. 'This behaviour does not reflect the values of our club, and we take this matter very seriously,' Harley said. 'While it is disappointing, we recognise that Riak is at the beginning of his career and we will use this as an opportunity to provide support and education, to ensure Riak understands the impact of his words.' Andrew's slur comes as Sydney prepare to hold their annual celebration of LGBTIQA+ communities, when they host Essendon at the SCG on 2 August. 'In a fortnight we will be playing in the Pride Game, a match that is incredibly important to our club,' Harley said. 'We are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.' Andrew was taken with pick No 55 in last year's draft and is yet to make his AFL debut. Earlier this month, West Coast midfielder Jack Graham was found guilty of conduct unbecoming and suspended for four matches for using a homophobic slur during his side's loss to GWS Giants. Another three AFL players were suspended for using homophobic slurs last season. Gold Coast defender Wil Powell (five matches) and Port Adelaide forward Jeremy Finlayson (three) served bans over incidents in AFL matches. St Kilda's Lance Collard served a six-match penalty for 'unprompted and highly offensive' slurs towards two Williamstown players in a VFL game.
