European football was 'massive' in Rothwell's decision to join Rangers
The 30-year-old midfielder completed his move from English Premier League side Bournemouth earlier this week and has quickly set his sights on qualifying for the Champions League and winning trophies at Ibrox.
Getting to work with Russell Martin again was also a major pull in moving to Glasgow and he believes the manager's style of play could be a perfect fit for the club.
Rothwell, who spent last season on loan at Leeds and helped them win the English Championship title, came close to joining Rangers in 2022, but the lure of the Premier League was too strong.
So, when the chance came round again, he jumped at it without hesitation.
Speaking to the media on Friday, he said: 'I'm delighted it's finally done, and can't wait to get going now.
'Just before I signed for Bournemouth, it was a toss-up between the two. Obviously, I decided to go to Bournemouth at the time, but I was thankful that the offer came back around, and I jumped straight at it.
'As soon as I found out that Russell Martin was getting the job, he gave me a phone call and that was it.
'I think he sees the game the same way as I would like to play if I was a manager, so that was the main pull, but it was more about how he is as a guy that you want to play for him, not just about how he is on the pitch.
'As a kid you dream of playing European football, and we have a massive game coming up in a couple of weeks time, so that is our main focus at the minute.
'If we can get through that, then as I say, the chance to play European football is massive.
'From the outside, you can see how huge this club is. It's built to win trophies, and hopefully, we can come in here, and if the manager can implement how he wants to do things, then we can be really successful and go on and win things.'

Tomiyasu termination Defender Takehiro Tomiyasu will leave the club after an agreement was reached to terminate his contract. Tomiyasu, 26, played just six minutes of football last season following knee surgery in 2023. The defender is expected to be ruled out for five more months after undergoing another operation in February. Tomiyasu's current deal is due to expire at the end of next season but he will depart the Emirates a year early. The Japan international joined Arsenal from Italian side Bologna in 2021 for £16million plus potential add-ons after snubbing rivals Tottenham. He spent much of last season sidelined by a series of niggling injuries. Duo not for sale Arsenal are not planning to sell Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard this summer as things stand - but five fringe players are expected to be moved on before the transfer window closes. The Gunners have big plans this summer after finishing second in the Premier League for a third consecutive year and strengthening in attack is a priority. The club are searching for a new No.9 and an elite-level left winger, with further additions in midfield also planned. Talk that Arsenal are looking for new faces in attack has, in turn, sparked speculation over some of Mikel Arteta 's current players. But two of his forwards will not be allowed to leave. Heinze addition Former Manchester United star Gabriel Heinze will be added to Mikel Arteta 's coaching staff ahead of the new season. The Gunners have already had a coaching reshuffle ahead of the fresh campaign with former assistant Carlos Cuesta having departed for Parma. That departure has left Arteta with a vacancy to fill and it appears that he has turned to someone that he knows quite well in Heinze. As per The Athletic, the former Red Devils defender is set to be appointed at the Emirates as a replacement for Cuesta. Arteta and Heinze already have a prior relationship having been teammates at French giants Paris Saint-Germain. Explaining the impact that the Argentinian had on him, Arteta said: 'The other inspirations were (Mauricio) Pochettino and Heinze, those two were next to me all the time, behind me, and they were guiding me in everything I had to do in my professional life, how I had to understand the game and they were inspirational to me." Man Utd set for major transfer boost as £55m Premier League switch moves closer
Manchester United could prove to be winners as a result of Newcastle United's latest move in the transfer window as the Red Devils prepare for a boost to their funds this summer Newcastle United are pushing to sign Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga after making a second bid worth in the region of £55million. And Manchester United may be among the parties hoping to see a deal done. After seeing a £45m offer turned down, the Magpies have come back with a £50m bid with up to £5m in add-ons. If Newcastle can finalise an agreement with the Tricky Trees, United could reap the benefits of the sell-on clause they put in place two years ago. The Red Devils sold Elanga for £15m in 2023 and the Sweden international has thrived since. The Forest winger featured in all 38 Premier League games in 2024/25 and scored six goals and providing 11 assists as the club qualified for the Conference League. United are reported to hold a clause that entitles them to 15 per cent of any profit Forest make on Elanga. That would see Ruben Amorim's side rake in around £6m if their Premier League rivals do earn a £55m fee. Personal terms are unlikely to be an issue between player and club, per the Mail. Though Newcastle may yet find rivals for Elanga's signature, with Aston Villa also said to be monitoring the situation. Newcastle, who can offer Elanga the opportunity to play in the Champions League, have a long-term interest in the player. The club failed to land the 23-year-old last summer when an approach was knocked back. On that occasion, the Tyneside team were willing to pay £45m fee which included an initial £30m payment, a swap deal for Miguel Almiron and two potential further £5m payments. Newcastle could find more success this summer however, and a greater fee for United. ' There is a lot of talk," Elanga said while on international duty last month, per Sport Witness. "I focus on what I can do and my focus today was on the match. In football there are always rumours. The most important thing is that I focus on what I can control.' 'I guess there will always be scouts wherever I play," he added. "As long as I stay focused and do my best in the match. "I just keep my focus and what I can control. That's what I can do on and off the field. I focus on the next day and action. That's what I can do." United would be happy to see a boost to their funds as they attempt to add to their squad this summer. The Red Devils have already seen two bids rejected for Bryan Mbeumo and are looking to add a new striker to their squad. Jake Cronenworth walks off Rangers in Padres' 10-inning win
July 5 - Jake Cronenworth delivered an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday as the San Diego Padres rallied for a 3-2 win over the visiting Texas Rangers. Jackson Merrill was placed on second to start the inning, and Manny Machado was given an intentional walk. After Luis Arraez fanned for just the eighth time this year, Gavin Sheets singled to center to load the bases. Reliever Robert Garcia (1-4) whiffed pinch hitter Bryce Johnson for the second out before Cronenworth lofted a 1-2 slider into right field, scoring Merrill for the Padres' fourth win in their past five extra-inning games. Adrian Morejon (5-3) pitched the top of the 10th for the win. Texas had runners at first and second with one out, but Morejon induced consecutive flyouts to right, the last coming off the bat of pinch hitter Sam Haggerty. Both starters received no-decisions after effective outings. Texas' Kumar Rocker allowed four hits and two runs over 5 1/3 innings, walking two and fanning four. San Diego's Randy Vasquez permitted three hits and two runs in six innings with three walks and a strikeout. The Rangers initiated the scoring in the third with a two-out rally. Josh Smith drew a walk and Corey Seager singled, teeing up Marcus Semien for a two-run double that sailed over the head of leaping right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. The Padres got a run back in the fourth on one swing. Machado drilled a sinker an estimated 440 feet to the batter's eye beyond the center field wall for his 14th homer. San Diego tied the game in the sixth. Tatis led off with a triple off the glove of right fielder Adolis Garcia and scored with one out as Arraez greeted reliever Hoby Milner with an RBI single just past Seager at shortstop.
