La Liga president rejects Courtois' plea to delay Real Madrid's 25-26 opener for more rest time
Real Madrid was eliminated with a 4-0 semifinal loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday and will have a 41-day offseason before their La Liga opener against Osasuna on Aug. 19.
Tebas said the decision not to move the opener was made by the Spanish Football Federation and La Liga agreed with it. He said players were to have 21 days off and 21 days of preseason training.
'I believe that they will have 20 days to rest instead of 21 and no other leagues like the Premier League for Chelsea or the French Ligue 1 for PSG are changing the games,' he said through a translator during a Friday interview with The Associated Press. 'So I don't believe that we should change the calendar for that reason, especially thinking that it's a matter of one day.'
Real Madrid played 68 competitive matches in a season that started Aug. 18: 38 in the league, 14 in the Champions League, six each in the Copa del Rey and the Club World Cup, two in the Spanish Super Cup and one apiece in the European Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup.
PSG will play its 65th game in Sunday's Club World Cup final and Chelsea its 64th. PSG opens its season from Aug. 15-17 at Nantes and Chelsea starts against Crystal Palace on Aug. 17.
'It's always the same for La Liga," Courtois said Wednesday. "To listen those comments from a president it's something that I haven't seen it in Italy, or in England, nor the NBA and NFL. It's fine if Tebas doesn't like the Club World Cup, but it exists. It's part of the FIFA calendar. We're here competing, and it seems this gentleman just wants to be the focus. I've never seen a president of another competition speak like that. The players' heath is on the line.'
Real Madrid causing problems
Tebas said Real Madrid seeking its own path rather than working collectively with La Liga is his biggest problem.
'They don't actually understand that we're a huge league and that if we will collaborate it's going to be positive for all of us," he said. 'The believe in the Super League and in order to get a strong Super League they need a weak national league. So they are working toward that objective.'
Camp Nou renovation
Barcelona hopes to move back to Camp Nou after two seasons at the Olympic Stadium. Camp Nou's renovations are ongoing.
'They are waiting for a license that is provided by the city hall,' Tebas said. 'We believe that probably by the fourth week of the competition he should be ready to play again.'
That would put the Blaugrana on track for a mid-September return to a venue that will remain under construction.
Barcelona is on track to meeting financial guidelines that would allow them to make moves in the transfer market.
'Barcelona's financial situation is good,' Tebas said. 'They are close to acquiring all the players they want in the coming months.'
Financial monitoring rules
Tebas hopes financial monitoring rules designed to restrain deficit spending become more consistent among UEFA and the European leagues.
'I believe that they're working on the good path to harmonize all the financial workplace rules that we have in Europe with the different institutions,' he said. 'That's something that we're seeing, as well, with Premier League.'
Television marketing
La Liga's games are mostly streamed in the U.S. by ESPN, while the Premier League has a large broadcast presence on NBC and USA.
'Free-to-air always offers bigger audiences, for sure, but we don't interfere in our broadcasters' models and we're very happy the way it is being distributed,' he said. 'However, there is something else that we can add, and it's that nowadays, and thanks to social media, we can connect with million of fans through highlights and other social content.'
'We are working very hard to fight the piracy,' he said,. 'something that is affecting the value of our TV rights.'

David Moyes on Everton transfers – Time is ‘running out' to build fans a ‘team to be proud of'
Everton manager David Moyes has warned that time is 'running out' for his club to get signings through the door as he seeks to rebuild his squad to challenge in the Premier League this season. Moyes has made clear over the past week that he wants as many as ten signings this summer having lost senior players such as Dominic Calvert-Lewis, Abdoulaye Doucure, Ashley Young and Jack Harrison, among others, due to the expiry of contracts and the end of loan deals. Advertisement Everton have so far signed young French forward Thierno Barry, 22, from Villarreal, the 19-year-old left back Adam Aznou from Bayern Munich and back-up goalkeeper Mark Travers from Bournemouth, as well as making Carlos Alcaraz a permanent signing after joining on loan from Flamengo last season. The club have an interest in 20-year-old Malick Fofana from Lyon but Moyes has also made clear he wants a mixture of more experienced Premier League-ready players aged 25 or over, as well as youngsters with potential. Moyes told The Athletic in an interview published on Monday that his club had been repeatedly rejected by players who preferred clubs competing in UEFA club competitions next season and the challenge for Everton is made more difficult by the fact nine Premier League clubs will be competing in Europe in the coming campaign. He said on Tuesday he wants to sign players capable of getting Everton in contention to challenge for European places in the coming seasons. During a press conference in Chicago on Tuesday before their Premier League Summer Series game against West Ham, Moyes reiterated that Everton were 'hoping to have done more business' by now and said 'we're just stalling a little bit in some departments.' He said: 'The truth is we are not getting them over the line at the moment, so that's a fact. We're not getting a lot of the deals done that we were hoping to do, we're continually reassessing and moving on if things are not coming to fruition. So we will keep doing it and we'll keep trying to get the best players as we can. We want to challenge ourselves to get good players if that is possible, and we're trying to do that but we're finding it quite difficult.' Asked if he had been surprised by the setbacks, Moyes said: 'My first thought was 'yes, I was surprised' because Everton is such a big club. Great traditions, what the club has stood for over the years, the new stadium is an exciting new move for us. But then you have another thought and you think again — 'we have been around the relegation positions the last five years and not far off the bottom.' Barcelona honors Kobe Bryant with new jersey bearing brand logo
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Spanish soccer club Barcelona is paying tribute to NBA legend Kobe Bryant with its second uniform launched Tuesday. The five-time European champion said its new jersey will replace the usual Nike swoosh logo 'with the 'Kobe Sheath' — the sword in the sheath logo that identifies the Kobe Bryant brand.' Barcelona said the club had a special relationship with Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash in Southern California in 2020. He made appearances alongside club members and first-team players during his visits to Barcelona and when the club visited the United States. 'The shorts are black with Persian violet details and a textured snakeskin outline, a reference to the Black Mamba alter ego of Kobe,' Barcelona said. The change, made in collaboration with Nike, will last three seasons. 'All in all, it is part of a brand collaboration between the NBA legend and FC Barcelona that is born out of a shared culture of sporting excellence that characterized Bryant and is also part of FC Barcelona's DNA,' the club said.
