Hundreds of people took to Swansea Bay during the hottest weekend of the year for a gruelling Ironman 70.3 on Sunday. As temperatures reached 30C 2,500 athletes took part in the event on Sunday which involves a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run.
Harry Palmer retained his Ironman 70.3 title in the men's race while Kat Matthews claimed her second Ironman Pro Series win of the season in the women's section.
Thousands of spectators lined the route along the bay to cheer on the athletes in the stunning location from the marina to the Gower.
Palmer, who finished the race with a time of 3:51:18, said at the finish line: "It's pretty surreal. I don't feel like it's sunk in yet. I'm just in a lot of pain right now.
"That was amazing. I feel like the spectators were even better than last year which I didn't think was possible. It was pretty epic.
"It was only until the last 100 metres where I thought: 'Oh wow, I'm actually winning here.' I didn't want to allow myself to enjoy it too much as I knew the guys behind me were chasing hard and they're amazing athletes."
Matthews, who finished in 4:20:37, said the race was challenging in the heat as she thanked spectators. "Thank you so much to every single person who cheered for me and for everyone else," she said.
"It was fantastic. It was honestly blissful until about 4k into the run and then I thought: 'Goodness, the sun's pretty hot down here on the beach."
Outside the top spots there were plenty of notable athletes in the race including former pro Welsh rugby international Shane Williams who ticked off another Ironman event as he completed the race in 5:26:00.
Also running was Owen 'Pedz' Peddle who has gained a tremendous following on social media with his journey from not being able to swim the length of a swimming pool to completing the Ironman event today.
Roared on by his many fans, the DJ from Newport, who said he did the event to do something he couldn't have previously done and to "lose a bit of weight", finished the course in 8:32:00.
He said: "The last nine months of my life have been mental, actually mental. Dragging myself from where I started to where I am now has been a hell of a journey and I couldn't be prouder of where I am right now." You can read his story here.

Gordon Ramsay makes major return after serious 2024 crash put him out of action

The celebrity chef says he is 'looking forward to more' after his incredible show of return to health this week Chef and TV star Gordon Ramsay has taken a major step in his recovery after being injured in a serious bike accident - competing in an athletic event for the first time since the crash and saying he is 'looking forward to more'. Ramsay said he was 'lucky to be here' after the cycling accident in Connecticut in June last year, which left his helmet crushed. Ramsay had been fit and active before the crash, competing in athletic events. Speaking after the crash, he said: 'I couldn't even put my f******* socks and pants on. Justin [Mandel, his assistant], he used to dress me in the morning. I felt like a f****** 95-year-old man. ‌ 'Asking a 30-year-old kid to put my f****** underpants on was embarrassing.' ‌ Following the accident in June, Ramsay said his helmet had 'saved' his life and praised doctors at the Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, where he was treated. In a video posted to social media at the time, he said: 'You know how much I love cycling and triathlons and Ironman (races) etc and this week, unfortunately, I had a really bad accident and it really shook me and honestly I'm lucky to be here. 'Those incredible trauma surgeons, doctors, nurses in the hospitals looked after me this week, they were amazing but honestly, you've got to wear helmets. I don't care how short the journey is. I don't care… these helmets cost money, but they're crucial, even with a kid's short journey, they've got to wear a helmet now. ‌ 'I'm lucky to be standing here. I'm in pain. It's been a brutal week. And I'm sort of getting through it.' On Sunday this week, Ramsay completed the Ironman 70.3 Luxembourg Remich - Région Moselle triathlon in a time of 06:52:28. He crossed the finish line 'with enthusiasm' after a challenging sunny day and was greeted by his wife Tana, who awarded him with his medal. ‌ ‌ Ramsay said: 'Super excited to be back, what an incredible race and well organised. From this time a year ago, it's a dream come true. Looking forward to more races to come.' An Ironman 70.3 triathlon is made up of a 1.9-kilometre swim, a 90-kilometre bike, and finally a 21.1-kilometre run (a half marathon). The Luxembourg Remich - Région Moselle triathlon, which is now in its 12th year is the only race on the circuit which takes athletes through three different countries; a swim in the river Moselle on the German side, a bike through the rolling vineyards of Luxembourg and France, and a run through the host city town of Remich. ‌ Ramsay completed the one-loop swim course in the calm river waters in a time of 42:41. He then embarked on the one-loop rolling bike course, climbing approximately 750 meters elevation along the way. He completed the 90-kilometer bike course in a time of 04:10:18. Finally, Ramsay set out on the pancake flat run course along the river and was cheered home by the epic crowds as he made it onto the famous red carpet and through the finish arch. This race marks Ramsay's return to Ironman triathlon racing. His journey includes completing the sport's pinnacle event - the Ironman World Championship in Kona in 2013 and Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire along with several other 70.3 races. Over 3,000 other age-group athletes also raced at the 70.3 Luxembourg Remich - Région Moselle triathlon on Sunday.

Ryan Reynolds learns exact reason why top target from Premier League has rejected Wrexham

Wrexham have missed out in their ambitious bid to sign a Premier League club's captain, with the player now revealing why he chose to sign a new deal with his current side Wrexham have been dealt a major blow as one of their top transfer targets has snubbed an offer to join the Hollywood-owned club. The Red Dragons are currently looking to bolster their squad as they prepare to play in the Championship for the first time in 43 years next season Manager Phil Parkinson has already added Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie and Leicester keeper Danny Ward to his ranks this summer. The former Sunderland and Bolton boss is expected to be well-backed by Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in the current window. ‌ Wrexham were strongly linked with an ambitious move for Fulham captain Tom Cairney back in May. It came after reports emerged that the Welsh side had tabled an attractive financial offer to the 34-year-old midfielder after his contract expired at the end of last season. ‌ However, the Scottish international has now decided against dropping down from the Premier League after agreeing a new one-year deal with Fulham. He outlined his reasons for choosing to extend his stay at Craven Cottage into an 11th year in a video released by the west London outfit on social media, which will make things clearer for Reynolds and McElhenney on why Wrexham ultimately missed out. In the footage, Cairney initially appears to hint at an emotional farewell before finally confirming he will be back again next term. ‌ He said: "Just a quick message to the fans. I've been at the club 10 years and we've had some unbelievable times together, with three promotions and two play-off finals – one where you were there and one where you weren't there. "Lifting the trophy at the Cottage is a day I'll never forget after winning the title and after that, establishing ourselves as a Premier League club, with three unbelievable seasons in the Premier League, a Carabao cup semi-final and an FA Cup quarter-final. ‌ "We could have gone a little bit further, but it wasn't meant to be. Captaining this club for as long as I did was always a special, special thing, and one I never took for granted. It was an incredible feeling every time I played at the Cottage, my favourite place." Cairney added: "I feel like I grew up here and you really took to me early on. Special times and I never thought I'd stay this long. For that reason, that is exactly why I'm staying for one more year." Cairney featured in 25 Premier League matches for Fulham last season and initially expressed his desire to stay after scoring in his side's win over Brentford in May. The Cottagers were yet to offer him a new deal at the time. ‌ Speaking to BBC Match of the Day about his contract situation, he said: "Nothing is sorted yet. Next week is my final game for Fulham. Hopefully it's not. In football, sometimes things go to the last minute and hopefully it's not my final time at Craven Cottage next weekend." Wrexham also recently suffered a setback in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest's Lewis O'Brien. Despite striking a blockbuster deal worth £5million for the midfielder, his wage demands are understood to be posing a barrier to completing the signing. Forest are said to be willing to sell the 26-year-old after sending him out on loan to Swansea last season. Although Wrexham have agreed terms with the Premier League club for O'Brien's services, the deal is reportedly in doubt as they are reported to be some way off the figures that the player is seeking when it comes to personal terms.
