Fluminense stuns Inter Milan to reach FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Germán Cano scored on a header three minutes into the match, and Fluminense held on to upset Champions League finalist Inter Milan 2-0 to advance to the Club World Cup quarterfinals in front of a sparse crowd of 20,030 at Bank of America Stadium on Monday.
The Brazilians move on to face the Manchester City-Al Hilal winner on Friday in Orlando, Florida.
Almost before both teams were able to break a sweat in the 90-degrees Fahrenheit heat, Jhon Arias sent a slightly deflected crossing pass from the right corner that Cano headed between goalkeeper Yann Sommer's legs into the net for a 1-0 lead.

It was all they would need.
The Brazilians appeared to add to their lead late in the first half, but Ignacio's header into the net was waived off due to being offside.
On the other end of the pitch, Milan kept pressing, eager for the tie.
The Italians controlled the time of possession throughout the match, owning the ball 68% of the time, and certainly had its chances after outshooting the Brazilian team 16-11.
But Milan simply couldn't will the ball into the net.
It was one bad bounce after another. And often times when one of their shots was saved there was no one there to score off a rebound.

Fluminense's Hercules eventually added a goal on a wide open shot for Fluminense in stoppage time for the final 2-0 margin.
As the match was winding down Fluminense players jumped up and down on the sideline. That celebration carried over to the field after the match, where they hopped up and down in unison in a huddle, their arms wrapped around each other.
After the game, frustrated Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martínez told reporters that 'whoever doesn't want to be here should leave.'

The match got heated at one point after a Fluminense player on the bench appeared to grab one of the balls on the sideline to prevent an Inter Milan advantage after a ball was kicked out of bounds. The Brazilian team received a yellow card, but not until after players exchanged shoves.

Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal stuns Manchester City at Club World Cup
Al Hilal's Kalidou Koulibaly (C) celebrates his goal with Marcos Leonardo (L) and Ruben Neves during a win over Manchester City at the FIFA Club World Cup on Monday in Orlando, Fla. Photo by Miguel Rodriguez/EPA July 1 (UPI) -- Marcos Leonardo scored twice, including a follow-up game-winner at the left post in extra time to lead Al Hilal to a shocking upset of Manchester City, eliminating the Sky Blues from the Club World Cup in Orlando, Fla. Malcolm and Kalidou Koulibaly also scored in the 4-3 triumph Monday at Camping World Stadium. Bernardo Silva, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden found the net for the Sky Blues. "We would have loved to continue because it's not easy to be here once every four years," Sky Blues coach Pep Guardiola told reporters. "I still have the feeling that the team is doing well, but we will go home and now it's time to rest, refresh our minds and come back for the next season." The Sky Blues outshot their Saudi Pro League foes 30-17, including a 14-6 edge in shots on target, but failed to break through in the critical stages of the Round of 16 match. Al Hilal goalie Yassine Bounou made 10 saves, tied for the most in any game this competition. Silva drew first blood in the 9th minute for the Sky Blues. Left back Rayan Ait-Nouri first sent a quick feed to center midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, who finished a give-and-go passing sequence with a chipped touch toward the far post. Ait-Nouri regained control and hit then ball in front of the net. Al Hilal failed at a clearance, sending the ball off of midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. Silva proceeded to collect possession at the near post, where he used his left foot to finish. The Sky Blues held the narrow lead through the halftime whistle. Al Hilal proceeded to score twice early on in the second half to snatch momentum. Leonardo beat Sky Blues goalie Ederson for an equalizer about 41 seconds into the second half. Malcom started that sequence with a breakaway. The Brazilian winger had an initial attempt denied by fullback Ruben Dias, but the ball deflected out to Leonardo about eight yards from the goal. The Brazilian striker finished the play with a header into the far-post netting. Defender Joao Cancelo assisted Malcom for a go-ahead score about six minutes later. Cancelo sparked the score by threading a long feed ahead of Malcom to trigger a breakaway. Malcom raced behind the Sky Blues' back line and used his left foot to ground a shot just inside the right post in the 52nd minute. Haaland netted an equalizer when he collected a loose ball and finished from point-black range during a corner kick in the 55th minute. Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation. Koulibaly gave Al Hilal another advantage when he headed in a corner kick from Ruben Neves in the 94th minute. Foden, who came in as an extra-time substitute, tied the score about 10 minutes later. He netted that score off a brilliant feed from fellow midfielder Rayan Cherki, who lifted a long ball toward the far post. Foden finished the play with a one-touch shot past Bounou. But Leonardo had the last word, beating Ederson with his dramatic game winner in the second portion of extra time. The Brazilian goalie denied an initial attempt from Serbian midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, diving to keep a header out of the net. But Ederson deflected the ball out to Leonardo in the process, allowing him to bring the ball down with his stomach before finishing at the left post. Al Hilal will face Brazil's Fluminense in a Club World Cup quarterfinal at 3 p.m. EDT Friday in Orlando. The winner will face Chelsea of England's Premier League or Brazil's Palmeiras.

Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal ‘had to climb Mount Everest without oxygen' in shock Club World Cup win over Manchester City
Simone Inzaghi has only been head coach of Al-Hilal for a matter of weeks, but already he has led the Saudi Arabian side to the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup. Al-Hilal secured a spot in the last eight of the tournament in sensational fashion with a dramatic 4-3 victory against Manchester City on Monday, scoring twice in extra-time to produce arguably the biggest shock of the Club World Cup so far. Brazilian forward Marcos Leonardo scored the decisive goal in the 112th minute – his second of the game after Phil Foden had equalized for Man City. Inzaghi, who only recently oversaw Inter Milan's Champions League final defeat against Paris Saint-Germain, showered his players with praise after the match. 'The key to this result was the players, and the heart they put on the pitch tonight,' he said, per Reuters. 'We had to do something extraordinary because we all know Manchester City, that team. 'We had to climb Mount Everest without oxygen and we made it. All the players were exceptional in everything, in the possession phase, the non-possession phase.' Bernardo Silva bundled in the first goal of the game at Orlando's Camping World Stadium inside 10 minutes, setting up what many expected to be a routine victory for the Premier League side. But Leonardo leveled the match at the start of the second half when he headed in Rúben Dias' block, before Malcom's breakaway goal moments later gave Al-Hilal a 2-1 lead. The advantage was short-lived with Erling Haaland scoring from a corner, and the game remained at 2-2 for the rest of the 90 minutes after Haaland had an attempt cleared off the line by Ali Lajami. Kalidou Koulibaly's header put Al-Hilal back into the lead in extra-time, but substitutes Rayan Cherki and Foden combined to send the match to a thrilling conclusion. And that came courtesy of Leonardo's winner when Sergej Milinković-Savić's header was saved by Ederson into his path. Al-Hilal will now face Brazilian side Fluminese in the Club World Cup quarterfinals having ended a 20-game winless run for Asian teams against European opponents in FIFA club competitions. 'We knew that it would be a difficult game against one of the best teams in the world and we wanted to show our ideas, our talents and our power,' said Koulibaly, per 'We made a very good game; we took our chances so we can be happy. We wanted to show that Al-Hilal have the power and the talent to be here and we showed a great mentality.'
