‘I think that's very screwed up': OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warns about ChatGPT privacy

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman
recently admitted that conversations with the AI tool are not fully legally protected and can be used in court proceedings as evidence. Speaking at This Past Weekend with Theo Von, Altman said 'People talk about the most personal details in their lives to ChatGPT. People use it, young people, especially, use it as a therapist, a life coach; having these relationship problems and [asking] 'what should I do?''.
He continued 'And right now, if you talk to a therapist or a lawyer or a doctor about those problems, there's legal privilege for it. There's doctor-patient confidentiality, there's legal confidentiality, whatever. And we haven't figured that out yet for when you talk to ChatGPT'.
Sam Altman stated that this lack of protection could have serious consequences, especially in legal situations. 'If someone confides their most personal issues to ChatGPT, and that ends up in legal proceedings, we could be compelled to hand that over. And that's a real problem,' the
OpenAI
CEO warned.
'I think that's very screwed up. I think we should have the same concept of privacy for your conversations with AI that we do with a therapist or whatever — and no one had to think about that even a year ago,' he added.

Sam Altman
warned against 'too much' reliance on its AI chatbot ChatGPT for decision-making. Speaking at a banking conference hosted by the Federal Reserve this week, Altman said 'People rely on ChatGPT too much. There's young people who say things like, 'I can't make any decision in my life without telling ChatGPT everything that's going on. It knows me, it knows my friends. I'm gonna do whatever it says.' That feels really bad to me.' He said that this over-reliance on ChatGPT is 'a really common thing with young people.'
Stating that OpenAI is 'trying to understand what to do about it,' he added 'Even if ChatGPT gives great advice, even if ChatGPT gives way better advice than any human therapist, something about collectively deciding we're going to live our lives the way AI tells us feels bad and dangerous'.

Dr Alok Kumar Rai takes charge as IIM Calcutta Director
Dr Alok Kumar Rai on Wednesday officially took over as the new Director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta on Wednesday, becoming the fourth person to hold the post in the last three years. The appointment was announced by Shrikrishna Kulkarni, Chairperson of the IIM Calcutta Board of Governors. In this position, he succeeds Professor Saibal Chattopadhyay, who had been the acting director-in-charge since January 2024. The statement said, 'The Institute looks forward to his leadership in steering IIM Calcutta through its next phase of growth, especially in an era of global transformation and AI-driven change.' The appointment of Rai marks a return to full-time leadership at the premier business school after months of interim arrangements. The institute's first woman director, Anju Seth, resigned in March 2021, three years into her five-year term. Her successor, Uttam Kumar Sarkar, stepped down in August 2023 after a little over two years. In November 2023, Professor Sahadeb Sarkar was appointed director-in-charge but exited in January 2024. Since then, Professor Saibal Chattopadhyay had been serving as the acting director while the process to appoint a regular director was underway.

Google expands AI Mode with PDF uploads, Canvas planner and more
Google is rolling out a suite of new features for its experimental AI Mode in Search. The update brings multiple new features such as PDF uploads, a dynamic Canvas planner and a deeper integration with Chrome and Google Lens. The company claims that the new features are designed to help users to learn, organise and explore more efficiently. 'We're introducing new features and capabilities for AI Mode in Search, just in time for the back-to-school season. You can already use AI Mode in the Google app on Android and iOS to ask complex questions about images, and this week the same capability is launching on desktop browsers,' said Google in a blog post. Ask questions about PDFs and images Users are now allowed to update PDF files directly into the AI Mode on desktop. This will enable the users to ask detailed questions about lecture slides, research papers or any other document. The AI Mode will analyze the file and cross-reference it with web data to deliver contextual answers and helpful links. Support for additional file types, including Google Drive documents, is expected in the coming months. Do smart planning with Canvas The new Canvas feature allow the users to create study plans, organise tasks and refine projects over multiple sessions. Accessible via a side panel, Canvas updates dynamically as users interact with AI Mode. 'AI Mode will start piecing everything together in the Canvas side panel, and you can use follow-ups to refine the output until it meets your exact requirements. Elon Musk says researchers are pretentious, there are only engineers at xAI and SpaceX
Elon Musk's xAI is hiring engineers to join; however, researchers have no place in the team. In a recent X, aka Twitter post, Musk defined his understanding of engineers and researchers. Responding to a job opening posted by a technical member at xAI, he says "researcher" is an ancient term which should not be in his company's dictionary. He added that from this day onwards, there are only engineers at xAI. advertisementHe stated, "This false nomenclature of 'researcher' and 'engineer', which is a thinly-masked way of describing a two-tier engineering system, is being deleted from xAI today. There are only engineers. Researcher is a relic term from academia." Soon after Musk's correction, the employee, Aditya Gupta, again took to X and posted, "correction: looking for solid engineers." About the job, the employee posted that xAI is looking for researchers and engineers to scale up the "rl environment with user feedback and preference in the loop." But xAI is not the only organisation to remove "researchers" from its dictionary; SpaceX (also owned by Elon Musk) will also follow suit. Musk stated that while SpaceX works on cutting-edge research on the advancement of rockets and satellites, "but we (still) don't use the pretentious, low-accountabiity term "researcher"." According to Musk, Engineer is the correct word for employees who work with xAI and SpaceX. But this is not the first time Musk has highlighted the difference between these two terms. OpenAI, cofounded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, has also taken an unconventional approach to job titles for its technical teams, borrowing inspiration from the past. In a post on X back in February 2023, Brockman explained that the company wanted to move away from traditional labels like 'researcher' and 'engineer', saying they had 'spent a lot of time thinking about how to describe these roles' before settling on the designation 'Member of Technical Staff'. The title itself has a legacy: it was first used at Xerox PARC, the celebrated research lab credited with inventions such as the computer mouse and the graphical user idea has since caught on. Anthropic, the AI startup founded by exOpenAI employees, has adopted the same structure. On its website, the company explains that all its scientists and engineers share the single title of 'Member of Technical Staff', and that its engineers are frequently credited as authors on research papers – in many cases taking the lead author argues that the old distinction between research and engineering in machine learning no longer holds, claiming that with large models 'that line has effectively disappeared'. - Ends
