Pistons reportedly land G Caris LeVert for 2 years, $29M

Reuters01-07-2025
July 1 - Caris LeVert, a former collegiate star at Michigan, reportedly is heading back to the Great Lakes State.
The 30-year-old guard agreed to a two-year, $29 million deal with the Detroit Pistons, multiple media outlets reported on Monday.
LeVert could take the place of free agent wing Malik Beasley, who reportedly is the subject of a federal investigation into gambling irregularities. According to the Detroit Free Press, the Pistons tabled a potential three-year, $42 million offer for Beasley due to the probe.
LeVert split last season between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Atlanta Hawks, averaging a combined 12.1 points, 3.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game.
After playing for Michigan from 2012-13 to 2015-16, LeVert was selected by the Indiana Pacers with the 20th overall pick in the 2016 draft but was immediately traded to the Nets. He spent four-plus seasons in Brooklyn before returning to play parts of two seasons for Indiana.
LeVert played 3 1/2 seasons in Cleveland.
In 524 career NBA games (223 starts), he has averages of 13.9 points, 4.0 assists and 3.8 rebounds.

Browns place Deshaun Watson on PUP list

July 23 - Competition for the starting quarterback job in Cleveland will not include the Browns' highest-paid QB, Deshaun Watson. Watson was officially placed on the physically unable to perform list as training camp gets underway in Berea, Ohio, with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and rookies Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel vying to be the QB1 when the regular season begins Sept. 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Watson was rehabbing a torn Achilles when he suffered the same injury in January. Two seasons in a row ended with injuries for Watson, who is 9-10 as a starter since being acquired from the Houston Texans for six draft picks and signing a guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract. Half of those draft picks were first-round selections. Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry had been staunch defenders of Watson's ability and status as the team's starter until the offseason, when cracks in the commitment level to Watson being a centerpiece of the franchise began to appear. When principal owner Jimmy Haslam said in March that the Browns were recovering from the mistake of "thinking we had a quarterback and didn't have one," the door opened even more for Cleveland to move in a new direction. Watson, who turns 30 in September, denies he'll miss the regular season, but all signs point to Watson being unavailable deep into the 2025 schedule. He counts nearly $36 million against the 2025 salary cap and following a number of restructures, his cap hit is $80.7 million in 2026. Defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. also was placed on the PUP list. Hall is recovering from a knee injury he sustained in the final game of the 2024 season against the Baltimore Ravens. --Field Level Media

Tiger Woods' son Charlie suffers major setback on the course in front of his dad

Charlie Woods' attempt at a bounce-back in the US Junior Amateur Championship came up short as the son of golf icon Tiger Woods missed the cut at the tournament. Playing at Trinity Forest Golf Club and Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas, Charlie had a rough first day at the tournament but hoped to bounce back in the second round. Unfortunately, that didn't happen as Charlie's 11-over first round and 3-over second round led to him missing the cut by a massive 12-stroke margin. With Tiger watching on, Charlie struggled massively at Brook Hollow on Monday - leading to that 11-over round. On Tuesday, at Trinity Forest, Charlie seemed to handle the course much better. He played the first nine in an even-par 36 and had the chance to finish under par after the back nine. He followed that with a better effort Tuesday, but his 14-over combined score missed the cut However, he bogeyed the 17th hole and then double-bogeyed the final hole to arrive at his 3-over 74. It means that Charlie will not be able to match the result that his father accomplished back in 1991 - when Tiger became the youngest US Junior Amateur champion at the time. Tiger also won the Junior Amateur in 1992 and 1993. Charlie played in the tournament last year and suffered a similar fate - carding rounds of 82 and 80 at Oakland Hills in 2024. His inclusion in the tournament this year came via a playoff at a qualifying site in Coral Springs, Florida. Notable winners of the US Junior Amateur include major winners Johnny Miller, David Duval, Brian Harman, Jordan Spieth (twice) and Scottie Scheffler.
