Dreamliners are safe, says Oman Air CEO after India crash

Times of Oman2 days ago
Muscat: In the wake of a recent Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash in India that killed nearly 300 people and raised fresh questions about aircraft safety, Oman Air CEO Con Korfiatis has firmly reassured the public that the airline's Dreamliner fleet remains fully safe and operational, following a thorough internal review and close engagement with aircraft manufacturer Boeing.
'The Dreamliner is a highly credible aircraft that has been flying safely for many years,' he said.
'We've been in contact with Boeing and, while no definitive findings have been released from the crash investigation, there is no evidence at this time suggesting a fleet-wide concern.'
Speaking during a media briefing in Muscat to announce Oman Air's official entry into the oneworld alliance, Korfiatis addressed the growing attention around wide-body aircraft safety, particularly the 787 series used by many global carriers, including Oman Air.
'Safety isn't just a priority — it's the foundation of everything we do,' he said. 'Following the incident in India, we conducted our own internal safety review. That's standard practice for us — and we do it with or without an external event triggering it.'
He added that Oman Air's systems are routinely audited, both internally and by national and international regulators, and that the industry responds with exceptional speed and coordination when incidents occur.
'This is a tightly regulated, globally connected industry. When something like this happens, the entire ecosystem — from regulators to airlines to manufacturers — works in real-time to assess and act,' Korfiatis said. 'If there had been any actionable concerns, rest assured, they would have been addressed.'
Oman Air's Boeing 787 Dreamliners serve as the cornerstone of its long-haul network.
Korfiatis closed with a clear message for passengers: 'Our Dreamliners are safe, and our commitment to operating at the highest safety standards remains absolute.'

Direct Muscat–Amsterdam flight to boost tourism to Oman: MHT

Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) announced the launch of a direct flight route between Muscat and Amsterdam, which is a strategic move aimed at enhancing tourism flow to the Sultanate of Oman and strengthening connectivity with global markets. From July 1, 2025, Oman Air began operating direct flights between Muscat International Airport and Amsterdam's Schiphol International Airport. The new route is expected to significantly expand Oman's air connectivity and facilitate seamless travel to one of Europe's key tourism and commercial hubs. The service operates four times a week using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, offering passengers a comfortable travel experience and advanced onboard features. The route also provides convenient access to over 40 destinations across Oman Air's network, including major cities in Asia and Africa. Commenting on the occasion,Azzan bin Qassim al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Tourism, said the launch of the direct route marks a strategic milestone in efforts to strengthen air links with European markets—particularly with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which serves as a vital gateway to the continent. He added that the new service is expected to increase the flow of tourists to the Sultanate and further enhance Oman's position as a leading tourism destination, while also supporting economic and trade relations with EU countries. He further noted that the Ministry places special emphasis on the Dutch market through an ongoing calendar of promotional campaigns and events. These include annual participation in the Vakantiebeurs Travel and Tourism Exhibition, hosting the ANVR Congress 2024—the national travel trade association of the Netherlands—and organising familiarisation trips for travel agencies, media professionals and tourism stakeholders. Oman will also participate in key tourism events such as the Reisprofs Event and TravDay, scheduled for October 2025, to highlight Oman's diverse tourism offerings and natural attractions.

Muscat: The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) Council convened its third meeting for the 2024/2025 academic year on Wednesday. Chaired by Dr. Mahad Said Ba'owain, Minister of Labour and Council Chairman, the meeting was held at the University's headquarters. The Council reviewed progress on the University's 2026-2030 Strategic Plan and approved two new master's programs: Master of Science in Energy Transition and Sustainability and a Master of Science in Food Security. Both programmes will launch in the 2025/2026 academic year. A key decision involved adopting the "Professional Practices Record" as an official graduation document. This initiative ensures students acquire professional competencies alongside academic qualifications, enhancing graduates' employability locally and internationally. Oman: An ideal platform for space launches

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman boasts an ideal location for space vehicle launches, with its proximity to the equator reducing fuel consumption for spacecraft as they launch in alignment with Earth's rotation. Oman's coastal launch sites overlooking the Indian Ocean and distance from populated areas have attracted international space companies seeking optimal launch locations. HH Sayyid Azzan Qais Al Said, Founder and CEO of the National Aerospace Services Company "NASCOM" and "Etlaq" Spaceport, stated that " Etlaq " pioneered the first Middle Eastern space launch with "Duqm-1," marking Oman's inaugural step toward becoming a global space access hub. The 18-degree latitude spaceport enables multi-orbit launches, including equatorial, sun-synchronous, polar, medium Earth, and geostationary orbits. HH Sayyid Azzan revealed that Etlaq's master plan will be operational by 2027, with its Formation Program enabling experimental launches within 14 weeks of planning since 2024. The program focuses on Omani workforce development in advanced space specialties, with current expansion including a second launch pad for experimental missions and a spacecraft assembly facility. Dr. Saud Hamid Al Shukaili, Director General of Policies & Governance and Head of the National Space Program at the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology emphasized that Oman's space launch project aims to attract global space investments while building national capabilities in spacecraft engineering, supporting Oman Vision 2040.
