GCDA to provide Rs 1 crore each to nine municipalities to develop open spaces
In the first phase of the project, funds will be allocated to Aluva, Angamaly, Thrikkakara, Kalamassery, Tripunithura, Maradu, Eloor, North Paravoor and Perumbavoor municipalities. Through the project, GCDA aims to develop public spaces and parks with facilities for the public, including children, to spend time and hold public gatherings.
'The intention is to set up open spaces like Ernakulam Subhash Park and Edappally Changampuzha Park, in each municipality that has facilities and where public events can be held.
Open spaces and public gathering places are essential elements of the urban environment, improving the quality of life, promoting social interaction, and contributing to sustainable economic and environmental development,' said K Chandran Pillai, the GCDA chairman.
The chairpersons of the municipalities appreciated the move to allocate funds to the civic bodies. The meeting assessed that the decision to provide budget allocation to municipalities is a first in history.

"That's the shift we are driving-from a software factory to an intelligence engine empowering every person and organization to build whatever they need to achieve," he added. The CEO also mentioned the company's goals, with three major priorities - security, quality, and AI transformation. "Security and quality are non-negotiable," he added. Earlier this week, US Vice President JD Vance slammed Microsoft for firing 9,000 Americans while still going for H1-B visas, reported Fox Business. "You see some big tech companies where they'll lay off 9,000 workers, and then they'll apply for a bunch of overseas visas." He lambasted the company's hiring practices, stating, "But I don't want companies to fire 9,000 American workers and then to go and say, 'We can't find workers here in America. That's a bulls**t story."

Decks cleared for land pooling for Infopark phase III expansion in Kerala
KOCHI: With the state government issuing an order instructing the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) to pool 300 acres of land in Kizhakkambalam for Infopark's Phase III expansion, the space-starved IT park can now breathe easy. According to Chandran Pillai, GCDA chairman, decks have been cleared with regard to land pooling. 'Earlier, we didn't get the go-ahead from the chief minister's office. Then there was the problem associated with the approval from Kizhakkambalam panchayat. We got that too,' he said, adding that the GCDA team associated with the land pooling will now study similar cases, like the Amaravati model. 'This is a first-of-its-kind step in the state. We don't have a precedent. We are studying the Amaravati model and others. Careful study needs to be done before we begin the process,' Chandran said. Discussions will also have to be held with the IT and revenue departments, as well as the district collector to hammer out the nitty-gritties of the procedure, he said. 'However, the fact we have got the green signal is a big step forward in terms of the Infopark Phase III project. Envisaged as a township it is a prestigious project for the city and also much-needed, since we have a queue of companies wanting to set up offices at the IT park,' Chandran said. In the 10 years encompassing two tenures of Pinarayi Vijayan government, 352 new firms launched their offices in Phases I and II, creating over 73,500 jobs, said an Infopark official. The city's IT sector has seen a steady growth since the inception of Infopark, from 100 acres with four companies in 2004 to 583 companies in 2025 -- tech giant IBM Software's Ecosystem Incubation Centre (EIC) being the latest entry. Started as a small unit providing employment to close to 100 people, IBM has grown exponentially in the last three years to grant jobs to over 35,000 IT professionals.

'You see some big tech companies where they'll lay off 9,000 workers, and then they'll apply for a bunch of overseas visas. And I sort of wonder; that doesn't totally make sense to me,' Vance said. The US V-P said that this pattern 'worries me a bit' 'That displacement and that math worries me a bit. And what the president has said, he said very clearly: We want the very best and the brightest to make America their home. We want them to build great companies and so forth,' he said. 'But I don't want companies to fire 9,000 American workers and then to go and say, 'We can't find workers here in America.' That's a bulls**t story,' Vance added. JD Vance's comments come days after it was reported that Satya Nadella-led Microsoft has fired 9,000 employees but applied for more than 6,000 H-1B visas since October. JD Vance's comments were immediately fact-checked by an Indian-origin tech investor, who said that the leader was 'misleading people'. In a post on X, the tech investor wrote, 'Microsoft didn't bring in new foreign workers after laying people off , they renewed visas for long-time employees who've been in the U.S. legally for many many years, stuck in green card backlogs.' He said that companies are letting their long-time employees stay in the job that was earned by them. 'Saying that's 'replacing Americans' is like saying letting a loyal employee stay and renew his visa in the building is the same as hiring someone new off the street,' the tech investor wrote. 'It's not. It's just letting them stay in the job they already earned.' He asked Vance to stop 'weaponising lies'. 'And here's what JD won't say: many of the 9,000 laid off were H‑1Bs too. They got no severance, no safety net , just a 60-day countdown to leave the country. If you care about fairness, fix the backlog. Don't weaponize lies.'
