The England cricket team on Monday announced their playing XI for the 4th Test against India in Manchester which is scheduled to start on Wednesday. The hosts made one change to their team which was forced as off-spinner Liam Dawson replaced the injured Shoaib Bashir.
Bashir was ruled out of the remainder of the England vs India Test series on Monday due to a finger fracture which he sustained during the third match at Lord's, which his side won to take a 2-1 lead.
'England men's spinner Shoaib Bashir has sustained a fracture to his left finger and has been ruled out of the remainder of the Rothesay Test series against India. He is scheduled to undergo surgery later this week. England will name their squad for the fourth Test at Emirates Old Trafford in the next couple of days,' the ECB said a couple of weeks ago.

Bashir sustained injury to his little finger of his left hand on the third day of the Lord's Test while bowling to Ravindra Jadeja, who hit a powerful low drive straight back to the bowler. He bowled just 5.5 overs in India's second innings, but had the honour of ending the visiting side's run chase of 193, scalping the wicket of last batter Mohammed Siraj as England notched a memorable 22-run win.
Dawson, meanwhile, last played Test cricket for England in July 2017 and will be looking to make his comeback after eight long years. The 35-year-old has been a consistent performer for Hampshire over several years and was named PCA Player of the Year in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
Earlier, ECB had also released pacers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton, both of whom have returned to their respective counties to play in the County Championship.
England lead India 2-1 in the 5-match Test series with the hosts winning the 1st and the 3rd Tests at Leeds and Lord's respectively while the visitors clawed one win back at Edgbaston.

Rishabh Pant compared to ‘Gary Sobers, Brian Lara' as England legend rues India star's injury: ‘I'm actually so sorry…'

Much to the disappointment of Indian cricket fans, Rishabh Pant is set to miss the fifth Test of the ongoing five-match series vs England. Pant fractured his toe on Day 1 of the ongoing fourth Test in Manchester, which saw him having to retire hurt. Then to the surprise of everyone, he resumed his innings on Day 2, and registered 54 off 75 balls. Speaking to PTI, England legend David Gower lavished praise on the likes of Pant and Ben Duckett, even comparing them to Brian Lara and Gary Sobers. 'Tongue-in-cheek…we have always said left-handers are the best. For some reason when you look at left-handed batsmen it seems to be more graceful than right-handed. I've watched a lot of great left-handers from my days growing up, Gary Sobers for one, Brian Lara of course probably the best of those when I was first starting to grace commentary boxes and describe these things,' he said. 'Now we have a guy called Ben Duckett, he has a very different style to mine but incredible to watch. Every time I look at him bat you're kind of wondering what happens next and you cannot forget especially in the context of this series, Rishabh Pant.' David Gower rues Rishabh Pant's injury The former England captain also rued Pant's injury. 'I'm actually so sorry that he's injured, and if this foot thing is terminal (and he is out of the series). There is a man who does the things that only others dream of. Some people call them nightmares but he's an absolutely brilliant extraordinary player to watch,' he said. 'So, you cannot replicate what he does. You cannot ask a young player, say age 15-16 to bat like Rishabh Pant, go on try that because that would be probably fatal to their career. But when you've got someone like that who plays this most extraordinary version of the game you cannot but admire it. He takes incredible to another level,' he added. According to reports, Pant has been asked to rest for six weeks, and his return to bat on Day 2 came as a surprise. The BCCI hasn't released an official update yet.

Ravi Shastri doesn't hold back, shreds Shubman Gill's ‘tactics' over Washington Sundar move: ‘What are you telling him?'

It took 68 overs for Shubman Gill to introduce Washington Sundar into the attack in the ongoing Manchester Test against England. The hosts are making merry as they are in a solid position of 544/7 in the first innings, with their lead extending to 186 in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Off-spinner Sundar had scalped four wickets in the second innings at Lord's, hence it was all the more surprising that Sundar wasn't trusted enough by the skipper. Washington Sundar scalped two wickets on Day 3 of the Manchester Test. (PTI) Once Sundar was introduced into the attack, he dismissed Ollie Pope and Harry Brook, further highlighting Gill and his captaincy. Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri didn't hold back as he gave a brutal assessment of Gill's captaincy, saying the call of not bowling Sundar enough was wrong on all levels. He further called out the 25-year-old for making several tactical blunders in the Manchester Test, which has led to England gaining a significant advantage. At stumps on Day 3, England's score read 544/7 with Ben Stokes and Liam Dawson unbeaten on 77 and 21, respectively. 'He took four wickets in the last game. Then you bring that bloke after 67, 69 overs. I mean, what does it tell that player? Here, I've taken four. I should be like a front-runner, bowling within the first 30, 35 overs. And you're getting me on after 69. And then he takes the first two wickets,' Shastri said on Sky Sports. Instead of giving it to Kamboj, who's new, playing his first Test match. That let the pressure off England. Then the bouncer tactic, which they're 24 hours late. That should have been tried yesterday to see if they could have made further inroads. So tactically a lot was missing," he added. Virat Kohli example However, Shastri also stated that Shubman Gill will become a better captain as he learns from his experiences. He also highlighted the importance of the support staff and how the likes of Gautam Gambhir and Morne Morkel can help Gill. 'I'll cite an example of Virat when he took over. He was the other way, as far as Shubman goes. He was extra, ultra-aggressive. Where you had to, at times, from the dressing room, calm him down, especially with field placing. It was a case of as if you wanted five wickets every session of play. It doesn't happen,' said Shastri. 'Sometimes you've got to, you know, respect the conditions and set fields accordingly. And that's why I think the team management becomes now crucial in helping someone like Shubman Gill over the first year and a half. I think that is the key,' he added. The former India head coach also stated that the senior bowlers in the side, such as Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah, also need to step up as they can set the field for themselves as they have been playing for long. 'The senior players in the side, they have to start being accountable and be able to set their own fields, have their own ideas. That should come from the bowlers as well. Okay, I want to try this now, captain,' said Shastri. 'What do you think? Rather than the captain going and telling them, if they played 50, 60 test matches and more, it should be them going and telling the captain, listen, I need to take a wicket and I want to set this kind of field. That's what Stokes does. He thinks how he's going to disrupt things and find ways of breaking partnerships,' he added.
