Govt pushes for rural tourism in 35 U.P. border villages
The selected villages in Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Shravasti, Balrampur, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Pilibhit will be transformed into hubs of cultural tourism. Each village will host ten homestay units, giving tourists a chance to live among the locals and experience daily village life.
Some of the villages identified for development are Dulhasumali, Bajha, Khunuwan, Kotia, and Gharuar in Siddharthnagar; Imlia Kodar, Chandanpur, Narihwa, Pahadapur, and Belbhariya in Balrampur; and Bankati Chidiya, Purab Majra Himmantnagar, Pipraula, Puraena, and Singhia in Lakhimpur Kheri, the note added.
Local youth will be trained as storytellers to narrate village histories, legends, and folklore to visitors in an engaging manner. Women from self-help groups will receive culinary training to prepare and serve traditional dishes, giving guests a true taste of village life. Moreover, products made by the indigenous Tharu community will be promoted in local markets and online, providing artisans with new economic opportunities.
'This is not just a tourism project; it is a holistic development model,' said tourism and culture minister Jaiveer Singh. 'We are combining tourism with employment, women's empowerment, and heritage conservation. Through this initiative, our border villages will not only attract tourists but also gain a renewed sense of identity and self-reliance.'
Officials confirmed that work on the project will begin soon, with infrastructure upgrades, training modules, and community engagement being prioritized in the initial phase.

FAM trip to Kannauj on scent trail
Lucknow: To promote perfume tourism and establish Kannauj as a prominent destination on the global tourism map, Uttar Pradesh Tourism department has sent off a delegation of 28 stakeholders on a day-long special Familiarization Trip (FAM Trip) on Thursday. The trip was flagged off by tourism minister Jaiveer Singh. The delegation included key players from the tourism ecosystem, such as prominent tour and travel operators, hoteliers, and social media influencers. Urging the participants to promote the distinct features of Kannauj as a unique tourism destination, the minister said: "This is not merely a journey, but a cultural immersion into the fragrance and essence of UP. He added that his expectation from the visit would not be limited to the alleys of perfume but would lead to a broader vision. "As tourism stakeholders, I urge you all to become active contributors in elevating Kannauj's tourism profile. Minister urges MLAs to submit proposals to develop tourist sites
Lucknow: Tourism and culture minister Jaiveer Singh on Wednesday urged MLAs to submit proposals for the development of ancient, religious, and natural tourism sites from their respective regions, so that Uttar Pradesh can continue to progress as a leading tourism hub. Chairing the meeting of the Tourism Advisory Committee for 2024–25, he said, "This would help enrich the tourism landscape of the state." The legislators expressed appreciation for the visible tourism initiatives across the state and noted these as significant achievements of the department. They emphasised that the development of infrastructure and the enhancement of religious, historical, and cultural sites have significantly boosted religious and spiritual tourism. This growth, they said, has led to improved earnings for local businesses and increased employment opportunities for local residents. They also acknowledged that Maha Kumbh 2025, the consecration of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, and the rising number of pilgrims at Kashi Vishwanath have elevated Uttar Pradesh's stature on the global spiritual tourism map. The members recommended a focused approach to developing naturopathy-based wellness centres. Additionally, suggestions were made to enhance the vision of candidates selected under the CM Fellowship Programme, conduct research on unexplored religious sites, involve local communities, and promote storytelling through local narrators. The committee also discussed strategies to connect international visitors coming to India for nature and medical tourism with wellness centres in the state.

743 & counting: Locals warm up to UP's homestay policy
Lucknow: Data from the state tourism department recorded a surge in the number of people willing to start homestays. Under the newly launched Bed & Breakfast and Homestay Policy 2025, over 743 homestays and 30 agro-farm stays were already registered across the state. The policy, introduced by the Uttar Pradesh govt earlier this month, aims to offer tourists affordable, safe, and culturally rich accommodations while unlocking new income opportunities for local residents. Reacting to the response, tourism and culture minister Jaiveer Singh said: "When a tourist comes to explore a destination, the experience of living with local people, eating their food, speaking their dialect, and understanding their way of life enhances tourism far beyond traditional sightseeing. Homestays and farm stays in many ways ascertain that this goal is achieved." Describing the trend as 'heartening', principal secretary, tourism and culture Mukesh Meshram said: "The number speaks for the tourism sector's potential to create jobs." One can offer up to six rooms or two-thirds of their residential property to tourists. A five-member committee led by the district nagistrate in each district oversees the registration process, inspections, and subsidy recommendations. To further support registered homestays, the state govt is offering financial reimbursements up to Rs 1 lakh for participation in national tourism events and Rs 3 lakh for international travel fairs and roadshows. This support is intended to help small, local operators reach wider markets and build sustainable tourism businesses.
