Gunnar Nelson out of UFC 318 fight vs. Neil Magny

USA Today6 hours ago
On the cusp of what would've been his quickest turnaround since 2019, Gunnar Nelson has pulled out of his scheduled UFC 318 matchup against Neil Magny.
Longtime welterweight veteran Nelson (19-6-1 MMA, 10-6 UFC) will no longer meet Magny (29-13 MMA, 22-12 UFC) on the July 19 card at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+), withdrawing due to undisclosed reasons less than three weeks from the event.
A person with knowledge of the situation told MMA Junkie of the news following an initial report from X account Octagon Update. The person requested anonymity because the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.
Nelson is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Kevin Holland at UFC Fight Night 255 in March. It was his first bout in more than two years, prior to which he earned wins over Bryan Barberena and Takashi Sato. The 36-year-old said before the Holland fight that he intended to be more active, but he still hasn't competed more than once in a calendar year since 2019.
It's unknown at this time if Magny, who stands alone at the top of the 170-pound divisional victories list with 22, will get a replacement opponent on short notice for UFC 318 or be shifted to a different card.

President Donald Trump Wants A UFC Event At The White House

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 16: Dana White and President-elect Donald Trump pose for a photo ... More during the UFC 309 event at Madison Square Garden on November 16, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by) If President Donald Trump has his way, the White House grounds will host a UFC title fight in 2026 as part of the America250 celebration. "Every one of our national parks, battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of 'America250' and I even think we're going to have a UFC fight," Trump said in a speech at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Thursday, July 3. "Does anybody watch UFC? The great [UFC CEO] Dana White? We're going to have a UFC fight. We're going to have a UFC fight — think of this — on the grounds of the White House. We have a lot of land there. "We're going to build a little — we're not, Dana is going to do it. Dana is great, one of a kind — going to be a UFC fight, championship fight, full fight, like 20,000 to 25,000 people, and we're going to do that as part of '250' also." White posted the clip on social media. The SportsBusinessJournal reached out to the UFC following Trump's speech. The UFC confirmed the promotion is, 'planning to put on an event at the White House over the next year to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.' Trump recently attended the UFC 316 fight card at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey as White's cageside guest. White and Trump have a long relationship. In 2022, White recalled the early days of his involvement of the UFC, along with the promotion's owners at the time, Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta. "This brand was so bad, venues didn't even want us. Arenas didn't want us," said White. 'These arenas were like, 'woah, we don't want this stuff in our arena.' "So we had a hard time finding venues, and Trump literally called us. He said 'Come to my place, do the event here. We'll have you at the Trump Taj Mahal'. 'He showed up for the first fight, and was their to the last fight, both times we went there. 'Everything that happened to my in my career that happened from there on out, he would pick up the phone and congratulate me.' The UFC also shared the video of Trump announcing he would like to hold a UFC event at the White House. The promotion asked fans who they would like to see headline the fight card. One fighter, who would like to compete is former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor, who wrote on social media, 'Happy 4th of July, USA. Excited with President Trump announcing a UFC fight event at the White House. I would be honoured! Count me in!' The UFC is on a break this weekend. The promotion returns to action on Saturday, July 12 for the UFC Nashville fight card at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Did Deion Sanders Make ESPN's List of Best NFL Draft Picks?

Did Deion Sanders Make ESPN's List of Best NFL Draft Picks? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. ESPN recently released a list of 'The best NFL draft pick ever at every slot from No. 1 to 262.' As expected, the best of the best were featured with a few surprises. Advertisement However, one name expected to be part of the greatest was on the list. Deion Sanders was given the title of best No. 5 pick in NFL history. The Colorado Buffaloes coach beat out a few all-time talent to be considered as the GOAT pick for the Atlanta Falcons. While there are a few inaccuracies with the list, ESPN's Ben Solak did an outstanding job putting it all together. Here was the reasoning behind his analysis. I know this because I've spent the past month or so looking at every draft pick since the common draft era began (1967) and using the modern seven-round format (Nos. 1-262) to answer that very question: Who was the best player taken at this draft slot? Plenty of "Oh, I remember him!" moments ... and plenty of impossible decisions. How I went about things: I took "best" to mean some combination of "most talented" and "most successful." As is always the challenge in debating the bestness of football players, any argument that exclusively looks at Super Bowl wins and All-Pro nods is insufficient and lacks context. Similarly, any argument that leans solely on individual player stats and film impressions is lacking as well. I generally tried to use historical accolades to contextualize career-long production. Peak season performance and single-season record-setting also mattered to me; this isn't just a measure of who played the longest but also who played ... well, the best. And of course, rings matter because rings always matter. But there's no formula here. There's my read on each pick, levied as fairly as I could make it. Disagreement is expected. In order to be the best draft pick, you kind of have to play for the team that drafted you. I only used this rule to the water's edge -- I'm not dumb enough to knock Brett Favre because he was drafted by the Falcons. But when it came to splitting hairs, the spirit of the exercise implies that the player was talented and the team that drafted him was successful because of the pick. Lifers for one franchise got an edge over career journeymen. There isn't a bump for QB value (unless it was inescapable). Again, the specifics of the exercise established a guardrail. Is "best draft pick" the same as "most valuable draft pick?" If that feels like a pointless distinction, understand that I had to make it in order to solve several ties. I'm interested in finding the best player regardless of position, which means that safeties can beat quarterbacks, and guards can beat pass rushers. Only in cases of the blatantly obvious (see: Purdy, Brock) did I let the expanded impact of the quarterback position affect my choice. I am 28 years old. I did my best with the stars of the 1970s and 1980s, but please do not interpret any mischaracterizations of the historical GOATs as ageist propaganda. When I'm being deliberately anti-throwbacks, I'll make it very clear, I promise Related: Nike Pays Homage to Deion Sanders' Untouchable 'Double Play' Feat Sanders went fifth overall in 1989 NFL Draft. He was 'Prime Time' for a reason and lived up to that nickname during his illustrious career Advertisement 'It's a loaded fifth pick (Junior Seau, LaDainian Tomlinson, Jalen Ramsey and Ja'Marr Chase), but Sanders gets the nod for his unique place as a two-way player (not to mention his two rings — one of which came in his Defensive Player of the Year season — and his six first-team All-Pro appearances),' Solak writes. 'Does he also get a bump for providing excellent return on a sixth-round draft pick in the MLB draft? Who's to say?' Related: Lil Wayne Sees Deion Sanders During Trip to Texas Amid Growing Health Concerns Nobody can argue about Sanders' place on this list. He's one of the greatest athletes on the face of the planet with a mark in not only the NFL, but MLB as well. During his Prime (no pun intended), Sanders could've played in the NBA for the Atlanta Hawks and was giving an opportunity to try out in the early 90s. Longhorns lose another recruiting battle with SEC rival

The Longhorns thought they were in a good spot with 2026 five-star linebacker Xavier Griffin. The Gainesville, GA native decommitted from USC in May and took an official visit to Austin in June. Austin-based recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman thought Texas would land the blue chipper. "It's down to Texas and Alabama with a June 26 commitment on the horizon," Spiegelman said. "No team has come on stronger with the four-star EDGE than the Longhorns. There's a sense Texas made another step forward with Griffin and his mother back in Austin this weekend." Advertisement But it was not to be. Over the weekend, versatile, 6-foot-4, 205-pound prospect committed to Alabama. Griffin is now the top-ranked prospect among 14 commits in Alabama's incoming class. "Growing up, just seeing them, all the draft picks and stuff that they've had -- all the guys they've put in the league -- it speaks for itself," Griffin told ESPN. "They have history and they're really clear about what they're trying to build with this new staff." Follow us on X/Twitter at @LonghornsWire.
