Trump tours Florida immigration lockup and jokes about escapees having to run from alligators
Trump said he'd like to see similar facilities in "really, many states" and raised the prospect of also deporting US citizens. He even endorsed having Florida National Guard forces possibly serve as immigration judges to ensure migrants are ejected from the country even faster.
"Pretty soon, this facility will handle the most menacing migrants, some of the most vicious people on the planet," Trump said of the Florida site known as "Alligator Alcatraz." The president said the moniker is "very appropriate because I looked outside and that's not a place I want to go hiking anytime soon." "The only way out, really, is deportation," Trump added.
Hundreds of protesters converged outside the site − a remote airstrip with tents and trailers. They waved signs calling for the humane treatment of migrants as well as the protection of the expansive preserve that is home to a few Native American tribes and many endangered animal species.
The administration sees the location as a plus
The White House has delighted in the area's remoteness − about 80 kilometers west of Miami − and the fact that it is teeming with pythons and alligators. It hopes to convey a message to detainees and the rest of the world that repercussions will be severe if the immigration laws of the United States are not followed.
Before arriving, Trump even joked of migrants being held there, "We're going to teach them how to run away from an alligator if they escape prison." "Don't run in a straight line. Run like this," Trump said, as he moved his hand in a zigzag motion. "And you know what? Your chances go up about 1%."
Trump on his tour walked through medical facilities and other parts of the detention center, then held a lengthy roundtable where Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and assorted state and federal officials heaped him with praise.
Authorities originally suggested it could house up to 5,000 detainees upon completion, but DeSantis said it would actually hold around 3,000, with some starting to arrive Wednesday.
The center was built in eight days over 16 kilometers of the Everglades. It features more than 200 security cameras, 8,500 meters of barbed wire and 400 security personnel.

How could the US-China trade rearrangement affect Europe?
Since United States President Donald Trump's inauguration, he has announced more than 50 new or revised tariffs, including pauses, backdowns, escalations and de-escalations. As the state of US-China trade relations remains uncertain, many US firms are considering alternative sources of supply. Without a shift to different sources, prices may rise, and US companies and consumers might need to reduce or replace one product with another, virtually similar one. In this scenario, Europe could play a key role, both as an exporter and an importer. "Europe faces an increasingly difficult challenge: how to transition from being a recipient of decisions made by China and the US to actively shaping its own future," stated Francesca Ghiretti, director of the RAND Europe China Initiative, in a commentary piece. On average, Europe already supplies 55% of the available global export market for products which the US imports from China. According to nine varied simulations conducted by the global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, the European Union, along with Norway, Switzerland, and the UK, could potentially replace about 30% to 65% of US imports from China with its exports, even in the face of high US tariffs on European goods. In each simulation, it is assumed that the value of US imports from China for each product falls to zero, and that instead, the US sources each product from other exporters. Products trade Europe's role in this scenario is most pronounced when it comes to electronics, other manufacturing, and textiles. The US has $191 billion, $52 billion, and $45 billion within each of these industries to rearrange, respectively. These are the same sectors for which the US currently imports mainly from China. In electronics, especially, Europe could be the primary substitute supplier in the US market. Another example is toys. Europe could supply the US market with Czech and German toys, replacing those made in China. This could see European consumers increasingly buy Chinese-made toys. As Europe has increased its exports to the US, it has also become a significant destination for Chinese exports, absorbing up to 55% of China's current shipments to the US. This shift could lead to deeper trade interdependence between Europe and China, as well as geopolitical tensions. "The next months and years will challenge whether Europe can stay the course, or it will lose itself trying to respond to ongoing challenges," said Francesca Ghiretti.

Hackers with links to Iran are threatening to disclose emails stolen from the US President's inner circle. The hackers, who go by the pseudonym Robert, told Reuters in an online chat that they have 100 gigabytes of stolen emails from Susie Wiles, the White House's chief of staff, Lindsey Halligan, Trump's lawyer, Roger Stone, Trump's advisor and Stormy Daniels, the porn star at the centre of the Trump camp's hush-money scandal. The group, Robert, said they could sell the material but didn't provide Reuters with any details on their plans, nor describe what was in the emails. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) wrote on X that Robert's plans for a cyberattack were 'nothing but digital propaganda, a calculated smear campaign aimed at harming President Trump and defaming honourable public servants'. The threat comes a few weeks after the US bombed the Fordow uranium processing plant in Iran as part of ongoing tensions between the Middle Eastern country and Israel over nuclear weapons programmes. On June 30, CISA wrote in a statement that Iranian cyber actors might target 'vulnerable' US networks and sites of interest, noting that defence companies with ties to Israel might be at increased risk. So far, there have been some attempts on American banks, defence contractors and the air force by Iranian-backed groups. Previous attack to gain the Trump campaign's emails Robert's threat, seen by Reuters, comes a year after an Iran-backed group allegedly leaked similar emails from the Trump administration in what the government said was an attempt to interfere in the 2024 election. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said that Iranian cyber actors sent 'unsolicited emails' to those involved with the campaign of former president Joe Biden with stolen material from Trump's campaign. The same information was then sent to members of the media. The FBI called it at the time the 'latest example of Iran's multipronged approach to stoke discord and undermine confidence in our electoral process'. A month later, the FBI said it had indicted three individuals from Iran with connections to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the country's military, in connection with the cyber attacks. The US Department of National Intelligence (DNI) considers Iran's cyber operations to be a 'major threat to the security of US networks and data,' according to a report published in March this year. State-sponsored Iranian groups and hacktivists regularly target 'poorly secured US networks and Internet-connected devices for disruptive cyber attacks,' according to the DHS report.
